The impact of Stellar flares on extrasolar planetary systems has been discussed and argued, especially whether there is a potential impact on their life systems. Here, we propose a comprehensive evaluation system for stellar flares, focusing on Stellar Proton Events (SPE) on selected extrasolar planets with hypothetical atmospheres and oceans. This is done by cross-linking KIC flare-observed and flare-estimated stars by their start pots that are directly linked with the Monte Carlo simulation system PHITS through the exoplanetary database system ExoKyoto. The estimated dose at ground level for each planetary surface did not exceed the critical dose for complex animals.

Local structure of LiNiO$$_2$$ studied by neutron diffraction

LiNiO$$_2$$ (S=1/2) forms a triangular lattice with the possible magnetic frustration, but the exact state of spin correlation has not yet been known. While there is no signature of long-range Jahn-Teller distortion, local JT distortion has been suspected. We have performed neutron diffraction and atomic pair-density function analyses up to unprecedented large distances to discover a number of unusual features, such as anomalous peak broadening, local JT distortion, sharp oxygen-oxygen distance correlations, and inverted temperature dependence of medium range correlation. These observations are best explained by local orbital ordering of Ni$$^{3+}$$ ions into three sublattices. This orbital ordering, however, cannot develop into long-range order because of the strain field it generates, and domains of about 10 nm in size are formed. Domains are susceptible to random pinning by impurities ssite disorderd resulting in the loss of structural long-range order. We suggest that this local orbital ordering is the basis for the complex magnetic properties observed in this compound.

PprI: A General switch responsible for extreme radioresistance of ${it Deinococcus radiodurans}$

We have identified a unique deinococcal gene, ${it pprI}$, as a general switch for downstream DNA repair and protection pathways, from a natural mutant, in which ${it pprI}$ is disrupted by a transposon. Complete functional disruption of the gene in wild-type leads to dramatic sensitivity to ionizing radiation. Radioresistance of the disruptant could be fully restored by complementation with ${it pprI}$. In response to radiation stress, PprI can significantly and specifically induce the gene expression of ${it recA}$ and ${it pprA}$ and enhance the enzyme activities of catalases. These results strongly suggest that PprI plays a crucial role in regulating multiple DNA repair and protection pathways in response to radiation stress.

To develop the analytical models for jet breakup and debris bed formation, we are conducting experiments that simulate these behaviors. Various uncertainty items associate to the experiment were clarified, and the reflection in the analysis model was examined.
