Using neutron spin-echo spectroscopy, we studied the microscopic structural relaxation of a prototypical network ionic liquid ZnCl$$_2$$ at the structure factor primary peak and prepeak. The results show that the relaxation at the primary peak is faster than the prepeak and that the activation energy is $$sim 33$$% higher. A stretched exponential relaxation is observed even at temperatures well-above the melting point $$T_{rm m}$$. Surprisingly, the stretching exponent shows a rapid increase upon cooling, especially at the primary peak, where it changes from a stretched exponential to a simple exponential on approaching the $$T_{rm m}$$. These results suggest that the appearance of glassy dynamics typical of the supercooled state even in the equilibrium liquid state of ZnCl$$_2$$ as well as the difference of activation energy at the two investigated length scales are related to the formation of a network structure on cooling.

The port-based plasma diagnostic infrastructure on ITER is described, including the port plugs, the interspace support structure and port cell structure. These systems are modular in nature with standardized dimensions. The design of the equatorial and upper port plugs and their modules is discussed, as well as the dominant loading mechanisms. The port infrastructure design has now matured to the point that port plugs are now being populated with multiple diagnostics supplied by a number of ITER partners - two port plug examples are given.

A novel ETFE-based amphoteric ion exchange membrane (AIEM) was prepared through a two-step radiation induced grafting technique. ETFE film was first grafted with styrene (St) (denoted as ETFE-$$g$$-PS), followed with a sulfonation treatment to obtain a cation exchange membrane (ETFE-$$g$$-PSSA). The ETFE-$$g$$-PSSA membrane was subsequently grafted with dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and then protonated, resulting in an AIEM with both anionic and cationic groups. The obtained AIEM exhibited high ion exchange capacity (IEC) and conductivity, as well as significantly reduced permeability of vanadium ions. Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) assembled with the AIEM maintained an open circuit voltage (OCV) higher than 1.3V after placed for 300h, and exhibited higher columbic efficiency and energy efficiency than that with Nafion117 membrane.

Radiation-induced degradation of cellulose in the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid

no journal, ,

1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) ionic liquid has demonstrated good solubility for cellulose without derivation. In this work, the radiation effects on microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in [Bmim]Cl has been investigated by measuring the molecular weight of MCC after $$gamma$$-ray irradiation. The radiation-induced degradation kinetics of MCC was studied and Gd value of MCC was calculated.
