The BaTiO $$_3$$ nanoparticles synthesized by the hydrothermal method is examined by synchrotron X-ray and TEM observation. It was found that the particle size of synthesized BaTiO$$_3$$ depends on the particle size of the raw material of TiO$$_2$$. Succeeded in synthesizing 100 nm size BaTiO$$_3$$ nanocrystals showing uniform particle size distribution using TiO$$_2$$ nanoparticles with optimized particle size. The obtained BaTiO$$_3$$ nanocrystal is a tetragonal system of ferroelectric phase. A three-dimensional structure of BaTiO$$_3$$ nanoparticles could be obtained by the electron beam tomography.

Nakashima, Hiroshi; Nakamura, Takemi; Kobayashi, Hitoshi*; Tanaka, Susumu*; Kumada, Hiroaki*

NEA/NSC/R(2021)2 (Internet), p.142 - 151, 2021/12

Aiming of development of facilities for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) that can be installed in hospitals, an accelerator-based BNCT facility is being developed at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center under a collaboration among the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the University of Tsukuba, and other institutions. It consists of a proton accelerator, having a maximum beam power of 80 kW, and a target, moderator, collimator and shield (TMCS) system. For the design concept, to satisfy the BNCT beam conditions and achieve a low activation, the radiation behavior in the TMCS system was simulated by the Monte Carlo method and this system configuration was optimized accordingly. In addition, the radiation estimation of the TMCS system was verified via several experiments and its applicability for BNCT was proved. This report reviews the estimation and validation studies for the development of the accelerator-based BNCT facility.

Topics from radiation safety design of J-PARC

Nakashima, Hiroshi

JAEA-Conf 2020-001, p.69 - 74, 2020/12

J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) is a high-energy proton accelerator complex of the world's highest beam power. Because of its very high beam power and its high energy as well as the large-scale accelerator complex, we encountered some very difficult problems on radiation safety design. Various examinations and countermeasures were considered in order to overcome the difficulty. This paper introduces some of them. In addition, some new knowledge obtained during 10 years after completion are described.

Bound spinon excitations in the spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ca$$_{3}$$ReO$$_{5}$$Cl$$_{2}$$

The spin excitations of the $$S$$ = $$frac{1}{2}$$ anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ca$$_{3}$$ReO$$_{5}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ were investigated by inelastic neutron-scattering experiments. The spin excitation spectrum exhibits sharp dispersive modes in addition to a spinonlike continuum. The consistency with the simulated spectrum based on the random-phase approximation is better for Ca$$_{3}$$ReO$$_{5}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ than for Cs$$_{2}$$CuCl$$_{4}$$, indicating that the spin system in the former remains closer to a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquidlike disordered state.

Confinement of hydrogen molecules at graphene-substrate interface has presented significant importance from the viewpoints of development of fundamental understanding of two-dimensional material interface and energy storage system. In this study, we investigate H$$_{2}$$ confinement at a graphene-Au interface by combining selective proton permeability of graphene and the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (electrochemical HER) method. After HER on a graphene/Au electrode in protonic acidic solution, scanning tunneling microscopy finds that H$$_{2}$$ nanobubble structures can be produced between graphene and the Au surface. Strain analysis by Raman spectroscopy also shows that atomic size roughness on the graphene/Au surface originating from the HER-induced strain relaxation of graphene plays significant role in formation of the nucleation site and H$$_{2}$$ storage capacity.

The utilization of numerical atmospheric dispersion prediction (NDP) models for accidental discharge of radioactive substances was recommended by a working group of the Meteorological Society of Japan. This paper is to validate the recommendation through NDP model intercomparison in the accidental release from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011. Emission intensity is assumed to be constant during the whole forecast period for the worst-case scenario unless time sequence of emission is available. We expect to utilize forecasts of surface air contaminations for preventions of inhalations of radioactive substances, and column-integrated amounts for mitigation of radiation exposure associated with wet deposition. Although NDP forecasts have ensemble spread, they commonly figure out relative risk in space and time. They are of great benefit to disseminating effective warnings to public without failure. The multi-model ensemble technique may be effective to improve the reliability.

Application of analysis for assembly of integrated components to steel member connections towards seismic safety assessment of plant structures

Transactions of 25th International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMiRT-25) (USB Flash Drive), 10 Pages, 2019/08

Exhaustive studies on external events that may pose a threat to the structures of nuclear facilities and evaluations of the structural integrities are critical to safety. One of the components that greatly influence the behavior of the plant structure is the connection of structural members. In particular, the modeling of the connections has relied on empirical methods, and been conservatively designed and evaluated by considering them as pinned or rigid connections. Therefore, in this research, we have aimed to develop a connection modeling method that reproduces more realistic behavior by utilizing a three-dimensional model of the connection. As the first step of this research, we planned to determine the stiffness of the connections of steel structural members. The results confirmed that the connection can be regarded as a partially-restrained connection depending on the connection specifications of the structure, and the prospects for realistic stiffness evaluation of the connection were determined.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

Triplon band splitting and topologically protected edge states in the dimerized antiferromagnet

Search for topological materials has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for their potential application in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. Recent studies have revealed that topologically invariant states, such as edge states in topological insulators, can emerge not only in a fermionic electron system but also in a bosonic system, enabling nondissipative propagation of quasiparticles. Here we report the topologically nontrivial triplon bands measured by inelastic neutron scattering on the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized antiferromagnet Ba$$_{2}$$CuSi$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands that are clearly separated by a band gap due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interaction, consistent with a refined crystal structure. By analytically modeling the triplon dispersion, we show that Ba$$_{2}$$CuSi$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ is the first bosonic realization of the coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, where the presence of topologically protected edge states is prompted by a bipartite nature of the lattice.
