As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

It is essential to wear an air-purifying respirator in the radiation works in a contaminated atmosphere. A breath-responsive-powered air-purifying respirator (BR-PAPR) has been recently developed. However, no research has yet been conducted to determine the protection factor (PF) of the BR-PAPR in actual workplaces. In this study, the PFs of the BR-PAPR were measured by a man-test apparatus and compared with those of a non-powered full face mask. The PFs were measured under three different situations; normal wearing condition, clogging the filter and leaving a gap between the face and the mask. Under these situations, it was found that the PFs of the BR-PAPR are higher than those of the non-powered full face mask. PFs greater than 4000 were obtained for 95% of the subjects who wear the BR-PAPR, and PFs over 6667, the upper limit of the man-test apparatus, were obtained for 49% of them. The questionnaire survey was conducted for workers. The results showed that the workers feel a reduced burden when they wear the BR-PAPR. The results of this study showed high protection performance and operation efficiency of the BR-PAPR.

Times Cited Count:6 Percentile:44.28(Environmental Sciences)Our previous studies showed the possibility that activation of the antioxidative function alleviates various oxidative damages, which are related to lifestyle diseases. Results showed that, low-dose X-ray irradiation activated superoxide dismutase and inhibits oedema following ischaemia-reperfusion. To alleviate ischaemia-reperfusion injury with transplantation, the changes of the antioxidative function in liver graft using low-dose X-ray irradiation immediately after exenteration were examined. Results showed that liver grafts activate the antioxidative function as a result of irradiation. In addition, radon inhalation enhances the antioxidative function in some organs, and alleviates alcohol-induced oxidative damage of mouse liver. Moreover, in order to determine the most effective condition of radon inhalation, mice inhaled radon before or after carbon tetrachloride (CCl) administration. Results showed that radon inhalation alleviates CCl-induced hepatopathy, especially prior inhalation. It is highly possible that adequate activation of antioxidative functions induced by low-dose irradiation can contribute to preventing or reducing oxidative damages, which are related to lifestyle diseases.

Safety demonstration tests using the HTTR (High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor) are being performed to verify the inherent safety features and to validate the numerical code for the safety assessment of the VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor). The partial loss of coolant flow test was performed under the condition of the ATWS (Anticipated Transient without Scram). We are planning to perform the test of loss of coolant flow and stopping the vessel cooling system (VCS). The test of the loss of coolant flow as one of safety demonstration tests is carried out by tripping all gas circulators, and the stopping VCS test is performed continuously after the loss of coolant flow. The objective of this study is to evaluate the temperature distribution of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and the VCS during the tests. It is necessary to consider the effect of thermal radiation from the RPV for evaluation of temperature of the VCS and concrete vessel.

The rapid-heating, quenching and transformation annealing (RHQT) process enables to form a stoichiometric NbAl with fine grain structures via metastable bcc supersaturated-solid-solution. As a result a large critical current density of NbAl is achieved over the whole range of magnetic fields without trading off the excellent strain tolerance. A long-length of RHQ processing has been established, and a rectangular but Cu stabilized NbAl strand is about be commercially available for NMR uses. Ag or Cu internal stabilization and Cu ion-plating/electroplating techniques have been also developed to enable the stabilized round wire for accelerator and fusion magnets. Successfully energized test coils that were manufactured with a wind-and-react technique have demonstrated that a long piece of Cu stabilized RHQT NbAl wire is really available for practical applications.

The small-sized and safe cogeneration High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) that can be used not only for electric power generation but also for hydrogen production and district heating is considered one of the most promising nuclear reactors for developing countries where sufficient infrastructure such as power grids is not provided. Thus, the small-sized cogeneration HTGR, named High Temperature Reactor 50-Cogeneration (HTR50C), was studied assuming that it should be constructed in developing countries. Specification, equipment configuration, etc. of the HTR50C were determined, and economical evaluation was made. As a result, it was shown that the HTR50C is economically competitive with small-sized light water reactors.

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

The thermomagnetic curve shows two significant magnetization slumps at 540K and 680K. High-temperature neutron diffraction experiment and Rietveld analyses indicate that temperature rise from 523 to 573K makes the magnetic moments turn to the c-axis from a direction parallel to the c-plane most significantly.The change in average orientation of the magnetic moments must be induced by the disappearence of the contribution of cobalt to magnetism in this temperature.

Parameters of nuclear kinetic characteristics (/) and loss-of-coolant reactivities have been measured in a 25-cm pitch DO lattice loaded with 28-rod(1.2wt% enriched) UO clusters and/or 54(or60)-rod PuO-UO clusters. The fissile content of the 54(or60)-rod PuO-UO fuel is 0.79wt%. The measurement was done by use of pulsed-neutron-source method. Experimental data are corrected to the values at 22C of the core temperature. Prompt decay constants measured in pulsed-neutron experiment are given as a function of axial buckling which is decided from the -scanning of irradiated copper wire. The parameters (/) are obtained from the value of prompt decay constants at critical. Loss-of-coolant reactivities are converted from the prompt decay constants at the axial bucklings of the core with or without coolant using Simmons & King's formula. The following results are clarified from this measurement. Dependence of the parameters (/) on the fuel composition and coolant void fraction is very small and they are in the range of 19 to 21 sec. On the other hand, the loss-of-coolant reactivities () are strongly depend on the fuel composition. The 54(60)-rod PuO-UO fuel is more effective in shifting the loss-of-coolant reactivity to the negative side than the 60-rod PuO-UO fuel. The 54(60)-rod PuO-UO cluster makes the loss-of-coolant reactivity to the larger negative side in comparison with the 28-rod UO cluster. Measured in the core loaded with 54-rod clusters is more negative than calculated one (Aihara et al, PNC SN941 79-77) by WIMS-CITATION code. The discrepancy between calculation and experiment is about 0.6$ (10%).

A variety of functions of F-actin related to cell motility arises from flexibility of F-actin that makes interactions with various actin-binding proteins possible. To understand flexibility of F-actin and thereby its multiple functions, it is important to understand dynamic properties of F-actin. As one of the ongoing projects towards this ultimate purpose, we employed neutron spin-echo (NSE) spectroscopy to investigate the motions of F-actin on pico-to-nanosecond timescales and nm spatial scales. We carried out the NSE experiments of F-actin and G-actin with the instrument, iNSE, run by the Institute for Solid State Physics, the University of Tokyo. It was shown that the motions of F-actin and G-actin on nano-scales were described by single relaxation processes, and the motions of F-actin were slower than those of G-actin. Diffusion constants obtained suggested the effects of internal motions of the actin-protomers.

Water is essential for organisms and desiccation damages the cells severely, and causes death of most organisms. Some organisms, however, known to survive under such arid conditions. This desiccation tolerance has been known to be related to the production of sugars in these organisms. One property which is important for the desiccation tolerance is stabilization of the cell membranes in the fluid phase by limiting the dehydration-induced increase in the gel-fluid transition temperature of the membranes. The membranes not only act as a barrier within or around a cell, but also control transfer of substances across the membranes. Elucidating how sugars interact with the membranes is therefore important for understanding the molecular mechanism of the desiccation tolerance. We investigated the effects of the sugars on the structures and the dynamics of the lipid membranes by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS), and neutron spin-echo (NSE), techniques.
