Rare earths (4) and actinides (5) provide variety of interesting states realized with competing interactions between the increasing number of electrons. Since crystal field splitting of many-body electron system is smaller than the bandwidth, (1) high resolution experiments are needed, (2) essentially no clear spectrum with well defined peaks is expected in itinerant Ce and U compounds, and (3) Np and Pu is strictly regulated. Therefore, systematic research on magnetic excitations by neutron scattering experiments of localized compounds and rare earth iso-structural reference is useful. We describe the electron states of heavy electron compounds NpPdAl and actinide and rare earth based iso-structural family.

The ground state contains the orbital with as a main component due to a large negative BK, which is the origin of the strong uniaxial anisotropy. The estimated magnetic moment, the calculated susceptibility, magnetization curve, and specific heat are in good agreement with the experimental data. The existence of a common charge distribution with CePdAl and PrPdAl. Indicates that a localized character is important even in actinide-based iso-structural compounds as actually observed in UPdAl and also NpPdAl, in which the valence crossover plays important role for the heavy fermion superconductivity.

The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of -integrated dynamical spin susceptibility "() exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the "() obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single chirality mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

A phase-locked pair of femtosecond laser pulses is generated through a pulse shaper to excite the ground-state cesium atom to the Cs(7) and Cs(7) states by two-photon absorption. The excited state population is measured by detecting fluorescence from each spin-orbit state. By controlling the phase-difference of the pulse pair, an ultrafast precise selection is accomplished. The contrast ratio of the maximal to minimal selection ratio exceeds 10 with the delay less than 400 fs.

The diffraction data show that the structural phase transition at = 24.7 K is accompanied by a reduction in the symmetry of the Dy site to 2/, from 4/, and the spatial ordering of the time-even Dy multipoles with A character. Below the crystal structure is described by the space group 4/ and Dy ions occupy sites (4). The distortion at T involves the lattice occupied by B and C ions, and it amounts to a buckling of B-C planes that are normal to the two-fold rotation axis of 2/. An immediately plausible model of low-energy Dy states correlates data on the specific heat, our X-ray diffraction signals, and magnetic ordering below 15.3 K which has been observed in magnetic neutron diffraction.

In order to elucidate the 5-electron states in the heavy electron superconductor NpPdAl, neutron scattering experiments of the rare earth based iso-structural family have been carried out. The observed crystal field excitations of PrPdAl and NdPdAl were analyzed via the crystal field Hamiltonian with tetragonal symmetry, diagonalized analytically. The experimentally obtained crystal field parameters were very similar in CePdAl, PrPdAl, and NdPdAl, indicating a common effective charge potential in this series. We succeeded to clarify the 5 electron states of NpPdAl and UPdAl in comparison with these results.
