The reaction mechanism of the direct photoreduction of a Rh$$^{3+}$$ ion complex to a Rh$$^{0}$$ species induced by pulsed ultraviolet laser irradiation was studied using dispersive X-ray absorption fine structure (DXAFS) spectroscopy. The time-resolved X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) showed the absence of isosbestic points and suggested that more than two Rh$$^{n+}$$ species contribute toward the direct photoreduction of Rh$$^{3+}$$. Analysis of the time-resolved XANES data by singular value deposition showed that the direct photoreduction involves three Rh$$^{n+}$$ species. Multivariate curve resolution by alternating least-squares analysis (MCR-ALS) of the time-resolved XANES data gave pure spectra and concentration profiles of the three Rh$$^{n+}$$ species. The Rh$$^{n+}$$ species were assigned to Rh$$^{3+}$$, Rh$$^{+}$$, and Rh$$^{0}$$ species based on the features of the pure XANES spectra. The concentration profiles suggested that the direct photoreduction proceeds in the order of Rh$$^{3+}$$ $$rightarrow$$ Rh$$^{+}$$ $$rightarrow$$ Rh$$^{0}$$. A reaction mechanism, which was proposed involving photoreductions of Rh$$^{3+}$$ and Rh$$^{+}$$, photoinduced autocatalytic reductions of Rh$$^{3+}$$ and Rh$$^{+}$$, and photooxidation of Rh$$^{+}$$, well reproduced the concentration profiles of three Rh$$^{n+}$$ species.

Rice (${it Oryza sativa}$ L.) is one of major sources of dietary intake of cadmium (Cd) for the human. However, the reliable technique to reduce substantially rice Cd contamination has not been offered so far. Here, we report the ion-beam irradiated rice mutants that do not nearly accumulate Cd in the grains and the mutant gene responsible for the Cd limitation. We found three mutants in which a favorable low-Cd trait is expressed by the different mutations on the same gene (${it OsNRAMP5}$), and the transporter encoded by the mutant gene ${it osnramp5}$ had a defective function of root Cd influx. The mutants adapted well in the Cd-polluted paddy fields by exhibiting nearly non-detectable Cd concentrations in their grains in accordance with no adverse economic traits. The DNA marker has been developed to breed new cultivars carrying ${it osnramp5}$. Our findings would be useful for greatly reducing the Cd level of paddy rice.

Development of a prototype module for the ERL superconducting main linac at KEK

A prototype module including a couple of 1.3 GHz superconducting 9-cell cavities has been designed as the main linac of cERL which is the test facility to establish the basic ERL technology at KEK. The shape of 9-cell Nb structure is optimized to accelerate a CW beam of 100 mA with sufficiently damped higher order modes (HOM) which is achieved by adopting an eccentric fluted beam pipe and a cylindrical beam pipe of a large diameter of 120 mm. Extracted HOMs are absorbed by the ferrite cylinders bonded on the copper beam pipes by HIP process. A power coupler with double disk-ceramics has been developed to transfer an RF of 20 kW CW to the cavity in full reflection. The test results of fabrication, cooling and RF performance for these components are integrated as the prototype module of the main linac for cERL facility.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

The Effects of rhizosphere pH on Cd uptake of soybean seedlings

Oya, Tomoyuki*; Rai, Hiroki*; Tanoi, Keitaro*; Iikura, Hiroshi; Nakanishi, Tomoko*

Radioisotopes, 56(11), p.729 - 736, 2007/11

To study the effect of rhizosphere pH on the cadmium(Cd) uptake, soybean seedlings were grown for 4 days in 0.2 mM CaCl$$_{2}$$ solution containing 1 $$mu$$M Cd under pH 4.5 or pH 6.5 using $$^{109}$$Cd as a tracer. The concentration of Cd in root at pH 6.5 was 3.4 times higher than that at pH 4.5. Cadmium amount absorbed on root surface at pH 6.5 was 1.3 times higher than that at pH 4.5. With high accumulation of Cd in root, Cd toxicity such as brownish of the tissue and the suppression of lateral root development was only observed under pH 6.5 condition. Transpiration rate was found to have no relation to high accumulation of Cd in shoot.

O$$_{2}$$ molecules adsorb dissociatively on Cu{1 0 0} surfaces to form the oxygen-saturated surface with the coverage of 0.5 ML. It has been found that the oxidation has proceeded more than 0.5 ML by using 2.3-eV-O$$_{2}$$ molecular beams. The kinetics of the adsorption reaction was the first order. This reveals that the collision-induced adsorption results in the adsorption of only one oxygen atom. On the other hand, the reaction kinetics showed the second order in the case of 0.6-eV-O$$_{2}$$ incidence. This implies that tentative molecular adsorption takes place in such low collision energy case.

no journal, ,

When nanosecond pulsed UV laser is irradiated into a H$$_{2}$$O / EtOH solution of platinum group metal (PGM) ions, PGM particles with sub-micron size are formed. We investigated laser induced particle formation of Pd$$^{2+}$$ in the H$$_{2}$$O / EtOH solution by in situ time-resolved XAFS spectroscopy and showed dependence of the reaction rate of laser-induced particle formation on the laser fluence. The dependence on the laser fluence elucidated that the photons contribute not only to the reduction of the Pd$$^{2+}$$, but also to the autocatalytic growth of the Pd particles.
