We surveyed the relationship between the scale of space weather events and their occurrence rate in Japan and we discussed the social impact of these phenomena during the Project for Solar-Terrestrial Environment Prediction (PSTEP). The information was compiled for domestic users of space weather forecasts for appropriate preparedness against space weather disasters. This paper gives a comprehensive summary of the survey, focusing on the fields of electricity, satellite operations, communication and broadcasting, satellite positioning usage, aviation, human space activity, and daily life on the Earth's surface, using the cutting-edge knowledge of space weather. Quantitative estimations of the economic impact of space weather events on electricity and aviation are also given.

The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

During three winter seasons from November 2016 to March 2019, 11 gamma-ray glows were detected at a single observation site of our ground-based gamma-ray monitoring network in Kanazawa, Japan. These events are analyzed with observations of an X-band radar network, a ceilometer, a disdrometer, and a weather monitor. All the detected glows were connected to convective high-reflectivity regions of more than 35 dBZ, developed up to an altitude of $$>$$2 km. They were also accompanied by heavy precipitation of graupels. Therefore, graupels in the lower layer of thunderclouds that correspond to high-reflectivity regions can form strong electric fields producing gamma-ray glows. Also, these events are compared with a limited sample of nondetection cases, but no significant differences in meteorological conditions were found between detection and nondetection cases in the present study.

As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950$$^{circ}$$C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Real-time estimation of astronaut doses during solar particle events (SPE) is one of the most challenging tasks in cosmic-ray dosimetry. We therefore develop a new computational method that can nowcast the solar energetic particle (SEP) as well as galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) fluxes on any Earth orbit during a large SPE associating with ground level enhancement. It is an extended version of WArning System for AVIation Exposure to Solar Energetic Particle, WASAVIES. The extended version, called WASAVIES-EO, can calculate the GCR and SEP fluxes outside a satellite based on its two-line element data. Moreover, organ dose and dose-equivalent rates of astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) can be estimated using the system, considering its shielding effect. The accuracy of WASAVIES-EO was validated based on the dose rates measured in ISS, as well as based on high-energy proton fluxes observed by POES satellites.

A physics-based warning system of aviation exposure to solar energetic particles, WASAVIES, is improved to be capable of real-time and automatic analysis. In the improved system, the count rates of several neutron monitors (NM) at the ground level, as well as the proton fluxes measured by the GOES satellite are continuously downloaded at intervals of 5 min and used for determining the model parameters. The performance of WASAVIES is examined by analyzing the three major GLE events of the 21st century. A web-interface of WASAVIES is also developed and will be released in the near future through the public server of NICT.

An innovative concept of sodium-cooled fast reactor, named JNC Sodium Cooled FR (JSFR) has been created and modified through the Feasibility Study on Commercialized FR Cycle System, aiming at full satisfaction of the development targets. A modified concept of JSFR applied double-wall straight tube type steam generator (SG) which is excelling in safety for sodium-water reaction has been developed. In addition, decay heat removal system suitable for the straight tube SG has been selected and in-service inspection and repair capabilities have been improved. As the result of this study, the potential to realize this plant concept has been obtained through evaluation concerning safety and economics.

The injection system of the 3-GeV RCS in J-PARC is composed of four main orbit bump magnets (shift bump) to merge the injection beam with the circulating beam. The magnetic field design and the structural analysis of the shift bump magnets have been performed using 3D magnetic and mechanical codes. In this paper, the design of the bending magnets is reported.

The National Centralized Tokamak (NCT) facility program is a domestic research program for advanced tokamak research to succeed JT-60U incorporating Japanese university accomplishments. The mission of NCT is to establish high beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. The machine flexibility and mobility is pursued in aspect ratio and shape controllability, feedback control of resistive wall modes, wide current and pressure profile control capability for the demonstration of the high-b steady state.

Design studies are shown on the National Centralized Tokamak facility. The machine design is carried out to investigate the capability for the flexibility in aspect ratio and shape controllability for the demonstration of the high-beta steady state operation with nation-wide collaboration, in parallel with ITER towards DEMO. Two designs are proposed and assessed with respect to the physics requirements such as confinement, stability, current drive, divertor, and energetic particle confinement. The operation range in the aspect ratio and the plasma shape is widely enhanced in consistent with the sufficient divertor pumping. Evaluations of the plasma performance towards the determination of machine design are presented.

The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute and the Electric Utilities have been studying for concepts of commercialized FBR plant system. In this study, a small sized sodium cooled reactor has been studied from standpoints of having a potential to use a power source applicable to diversified social needs and reduced capital risks. The concept is pursued to satisfy various requirements: economical competitiveness, reactor safety, very long lived core, etc. The electrical power is set to 165 MWe based on previous studies of small sized sodium cooled reactor which was aim of cost reduction of the plant pursued. A three regional Zr concentration with one Pu enrichment core has been designed. The burn-up reactivity is kept 1.17% dk/k and the core refueling occurs after 20 years operation with 77,000 MWd/t average burn-up. The reactor system is enhanced a passive safety to avoid a core melt even an ATWS and the design has possible capability to withstand UTOP and ULOHS events, although it requires reactor shutdown action by operator within a certain time. Tank-type primary system has been designed. A circular type IHX and a primary EMP are located in series inside of the reactor vessel. The steam generator and the secondary EMP are located outside of the reactor vessel and connected to the IHX by piping. A diameter of the core is minimized in order to reduce a reactor vessel size. Two PRACS driven by natural circulation is chosen as a decay heat removal system in order to satisfy a heat removal condition of Category IV in Japanese standard.The construction cost of the whole plant evaluates to be achieved an economical goal considering a mass production.

Study on plant concept for Gas Cooled Fast Reactor

In "Feasibility Study on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle System", technological options including various coolant (sodium, heavy metal, gas, water, etc.), fuel type (MOX, metal, nitride) and output power are considered and classified, and commercialized FBR that have economical cost equal to LWR are pursued. In FY2003, in order to define the prospect for technical feasibility of the helium gas cooled FR using coated particle fuel (He GFR), which has been selected as a prospective concept in FY2001, the preliminary conceptual designs of the core and plant are conducted, and a concept of gas cooled plant is established and data required for the interim evaluation of Phase 2 are prepared. This report summarizes the results of the plant design study and the preparation of data for "Multi-Criteria Evaluation" in FY2003. The result of study: (1)The plant specifications and main equipment concept design were studied for preliminary plant design. In this study, effectiveness of the thermal insulators in the reactor structure, seismic evaluation of the gas turbines and integrity of structure in the core catcher were studied. The plant layout was reviewed based on the results of plant designs. (2)The result of study for the preparation of data for "Multi-Criteria Evaluation" : ISI procedure (draft) for the primary system equipment of He GFR was set up, and the inspection processes were reviewed, according to the ISI standard for LWR. The amount of wastes produced in decommissioning and operation was roughly estimated.Major R&D items concerning the He GFR plant design were proposed including the required methods and schedules. (3)The data required for construction cost evaluation was prepared, and the construction cost of He GCR was 10% above the target cost.

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.

The present report contains the achievement of "Research and Development on Reduced-Moderation Light Water Reactor with Passive Safety Features", which was performed by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), Hitachi Ltd., Japan Atomic Power Company and Tokyo Institute of Technology in FY2000-2002 as the innovative and viable nuclear energy technology (IVNET) development project operated by the Institute of Applied Energy (IAE). In the present project, the reduced-moderation water reactor (RMWR) has been developed to ensure sustainable energy supply and to solve the recent problems of nuclear power and nuclear fuel cycle, such as economical competitiveness, effective use of plutonium and reduction of spent fuel storage. The RMWR can attain the favorable characteristics such as high burnup, long operation cycle, multiple recycling of plutonium (Pu) and effective utilization of uranium resources based on accumulated LWR technologies.

The dominant issue for the the modification program of JT-60 (JT-60SC) is to demonstrate the steady state reactor relevant plasma operation. Physics design on plasma parameters, operation scenarios, and the plasma control method are investigated for the achievement of high-$$beta$$. Engineering design and the R&D on the superconducting magnet coils, radiation shield, and vacuum vessel are performed. Recent progress in such physics and technology developments is presented.
