Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:15.81(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)In situ electron irradiation using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was performed to visualize the Frank loop evolution in aluminium-copper (Al-Cu) alloy with an atomic-scale spatial resolution of 0.12 nm. The HRTEM observation along the [110] direction of the FCC-Al lattice, Frank partial dislocation bounding an intrinsic stacking fault exhibited an asymmetrical climb along the 112 direction opposed to those in the reference pure Al under an electron irradiation, with a corresponding displacement-per-atom rate of 0.055-0.120 dpa/s. The asymmetrical climb of the partial dislocation was described as pinning effects due to Cu-Cu bonding in Guinier-Preston zones by a molecular dynamics simulation.

Since the diffusion couple, which is a general method for measuring the diffusion coefficient, can be applied only at high temperature, atom probe tomography and Cu precipitation rate theory were used in this study. The estimated diffusion coefficient was found to be more reliable than that obtained in previous studies. Therefore, it is considered that the estimation by the atom probe provided higher accuracy. Furthermore, the kinetic Monte Carlo simulation revealed that the diffusion coefficient estimated by this method tends to be slightly overestimated as the temperature decreases.

In these alloys, Al and Cr are key elements with important synergistic effects: enhancement of the formation of oxidation-resistant AlO phase by Cr addition and suppression of the formation of the embrittling Cr-rich ' phase by Al addition. The solid-solution strengthening resulting from Al and Cr co-addition was investigated in this study. The solid-solution strengthening resulting from Al and Cr co-addition was investigated in this study. The Al and Cr contents were systematically varied from 9-16 at.% and 10-17 at.%, respectively, and tensile tests were conducted at 298 K, 573 K and 973 K in the as-annealed condition. The solid solution strengthening increased linearly, 20 MPa per 1 at.% Al and 5 MPa per 1 at.% Cr, at the typical LWR operational temperature of 573 K. The conventional Fleischer-Friedel and Labusch theories cannot explain this level of solid-solution strengthening. It was shown that Suzuki's double kink theory for screw dislocations reasonably predicts the solid solution strengthening by Al and Cr as well as the inverse dependency on the absolute temperature and linear dependency on the Al and Cr content.

In order to ensure the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel in the long term, it is necessary to understand the effects of irradiation on the materials. In this study, irradiation-induced dislocation loops were observed in neutron-irradiated reactor pressure vessel specimens during annealing using our newly developed WB-STEM. It was confirmed that the proportion of loops increased with increasing annealing temperature. We also succeeded in observing the phenomenon that two loops collide into a loop. Moreover, a phenomenon in which dislocation loops decorate dislocations was also observed, and the mechanism was successfully explained by molecular dynamics simulation.

Times Cited Count:15 Percentile:85.68(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)9Cr-ODS steel claddings consisting of tempered martensitic matrix, showed prominent creep rupture strength at 1000 C, which surpassed that of heat-resistant austenitic steels although creep rupture strength of tempered martensitic steels is generally lower than that of austenitic steels at high temperatures. The measured creep rupture strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings at 1000 C was higher than that from extrapolated creep rupture trend curves formulated using data at temperatures from 650 to 850 C. This superior strength seemed to be owing to transformation of the matrix from the -phase to the -phase. The transient burst strengths for 9Cr-ODS steel were much higher than those for 11Cr-ferritic/martensitic steel (PNC-FMS). Cumulative damage fraction analyses suggested that the life fraction rule can be used for the rupture life prediction of 9Cr-ODS steel and PNC-FMS claddings in the transient and accidental events with a certain accuracy.

Times Cited Count:37 Percentile:96.87(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)Ultra-high temperature ring tensile tests were carried out to investigate the tensile behavior of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel claddings and wrapper materials under severe accident conditions; temperatures ranged from room temperature to 1400C which is near the melting point of core materials. The experimental results showed that tensile strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings was highest in the core materials at the ultra-high temperatures between 900 and 1200C, but that there was significant degradation in tensile strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings above 1200C. This degradation was attributed to grain boundary sliding deformation with / transformation, which was associated with reduced ductility. On the other hand, tensile strength of recrystallized 12Cr-ODS and FeCrAl-ODS steel claddings retained its high value above 1200 C unlike the other tested materials. Present study includes the result of "R&D of ODS ferritic steel fuel cladding for maintaining fuel integrity at the high temperature accident condition" entrusted to Hokkaido University by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT).

In the framework of GIF, SDC and SDG for the generation IV SFRs have been developed in the circumstance of worldwide deployment of SFRs. JAEA and MFBR have been investigating design study of an advanced loop-type SFR to satisfy SDC in the feasibility study of SDG for SFR. In this study, the ability of the pump/IHX in the advanced loop-type SFR for the safety measures has been evaluated. In addition to the safety measures, maintainability and reparability are taken into account in the advanced loop-type SFR design study. The pump/IHX has been modified to satisfy these requirements. This paper describes the modifications for the ability to withstand a severe earthquake, the reliability of the guard vessel in the primary coolant leak, and the reliability of expansion joints in a sodium-water reaction. The evaluations of thermal transient, structural vibration with pump rotation and wear-out of IHX tubes, that has been adversely effected by the modifications, were described as well.

Understanding of the fracture network is important for disposal of high-level radioactive waste. We present our hypothesis on the formative mechanism of inhomogeneous distribution of fracture in the Toki Granite. In the Toki Granite, low- and high-angle fractures are abundant at the shallower part, while less at the deeper part where high-angle fracture is dominant. Distribution of the high-angle fracture is inhomogeneous. Thermochronological study revealed that the rapid cooling occurred at the early stage of granite formation. Paleomagnetic directions of the intact granite were dispersed. This suggests granite was plastically deformed during rapid cooling period. The rapid cooling might cause inhomogeneous distribution of cooling strain. When the granite reached to brittle deformation field, inhomogeneous fracture distribution was formed by the inhomogeneous strain. If so, recognition of the cooling history is essential to understand the distribution of the fracture network.

Mechanical creep-fatigue tests and thermal creep-fatigue test were performed. A series of Finite Element Analysis was also carried out to predict the number of cycles to failure by the several creep-fatigue life evaluation methods. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several types of evaluation methods such are stress redistribution locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method and the methods described in the JSME FRs code were applied. Through the comparisons, it was appeared that SRL method gave rational conservative prediction of the creep-fatigue life for all conditions tested in this study. The JSME FRs code gave an evaluation over 70 times conservative lives comparing with the test results.

Both structures show a striking resemblance with the overall structure of the well-known CuNiRs composed of two Greek key -barrel domains; however, a remarkable structural difference was found in the N-terminal region. The unique region has one -strand and one -helix extended to the northern surface of the type-1 copper site. The superposition of the CuNiR model on the electron-transfer complex structure of CuNiR with the redox partner cytochrome in other denitrifier system led us to infer that this region contributes to the transient binding with the partner protein during the interprotein electron transfer reaction in the system. Furthermore, electron-transfer kinetics experiments using N-terminal residue-deleted mutant and the redox partner, cytochrome , were carried out. These structural and kinetics studies demonstrate that that region is directly involved in the specific partner recognition.

Voltage holding capability of a large negative ion source for fusion application is experimentally examined, which is characterized by multiple-stage acceleration with multiple-apertures over 1000 on large-area grids of 2 m for the multiple-beamlet accelerations. From the observation of the vacuum discharge between the grids, it was found that the aperture generated 10 times larger dark current than the flat region and initiated the vacuum discharge associated with the breakdown. As a result, it was found that the sustainable voltages were dominated by not only the surface area but also the number of the apertures. Because these effects were originated in the area effects by weak and strong electric field profiles, these results implied the surface integration of the electric field were the key parameter for the vacuum insulation.

Times Cited Count:14 Percentile:72.01(Nuclear Science & Technology)In order to confirm the irradiation behavior of ODS steels and thus judge their applicability to fuel claddings, fuel pin irradiation tests using 9Cr and 12Cr-ODS claddings developed by JAEA were conducted to burnup of 11.9 at% and neutron dose of 51 dpa in the BOR-60. Superior properties of the ODS claddings concerning FCCI, dimensional stability under irradiation and so on were confirmed indicating good application prospects for high burnup fuel. On the other hand, peculiar irradiation behaviors, fuel pin failure and the microstructure change containing coarse and irregular precipitates, occurred in a part of the fuel pin with 9Cr-ODS cladding. This paper describes evaluation of the obtained irradiation data and the investigation results into the cause of the peculiar irradiation behaviors.

To investigate the effect of cysteine mutation on the function, stability and structure of kinase, free cysteines of c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) were systematically removed by mutation. Two cysteine-destructed mutants in which three (M3) and seven (M7) cysteine residues are removed, yielded about 5 and 2 times than wild type JNK-1 (M0). SDS PAGE analysis showed that the aggregation was less in the case of M3 and M7. Thermal unfolding experiment of M0, M3 and M7 using by differential scanning calorimetry proceeded at least three state unfolding. Crystal structure of the M3 mutant was determined to 2.6 resolution, which was identical to that of the wild-type. Consequently, due to the highest yield, its improved stability against aggregation and its structural similarity to the wild type, the M3 mutant is suitable for the use of further characterization of its function and structure.
