Interlaboratory comparison studies are important for radiation dosimetry in order to demonstrate how the technique is universally available. The set of standard samples are examined in each participating laboratory in the present study. After a set of standard samples together with the samples with unknown doses, which were prepared in the same laboratory as the standard samples, are measured at a participating laboratory, those samples are sent to another participating laboratory for next measurement. There is some small difference observed in the sensitivity (the slope of the dose response line) of the standard samples while the differences in the obtained doses for the samples with unknown doses are rather systematic, implying that the difference is mostly due to the samples but not to measurements.

Because of the decommission of the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR), the domestic neutron irradiation facility, which had played a central role in the development of innovative nuclear reactors and the development of technologies to further improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of light water reactors, was lost. Therefore, it has become difficult to pass on the operation techniques of the irradiation test reactors and irradiation technologies, and to train human resources. In order to cope with these issues, we conducted a study on the implementation of irradiation tests using overseas reactors as neutron irradiation sites as an alternative method. Based on the "Arrangement between the National Centre for Nuclear Research and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency for Cooperation in Research and Development on Testing Reactor," the feasibility of conducting an irradiation test at the MARIA reactor (30 MW) owned by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) using the temperature control system, which is one of the JMTR irradiation technologies, was examined. As a result, it was found that the irradiation test was possible by modifying the ready-made capsule manufactured in accordance with the design and manufacturing standards of the JMTR. After the modification, a penetration test, an insulation continuity test, and an operation test in the range of room temperature to 300$$^{circ}$$C, which is the operating temperature of the capsule, were conducted and favorable results were obtained. We have completed the preparations prior to transport to the MARIA reactor.

The background scattering of sample cells suitable for aqueous protein solution samples, conducted with a neutron backscattering spectrometer, was evaluated. It was found that the scattering intensity of an aluminum sample cell coated with boehmite using D$$_{2}$$O was lower than that of a sample cell coated with regular water (H$$_{2}$$O). In addition, meticulous attention to cells with small individual weight differences and the positional reproducibility of the sample cell relative to the spectrometer neutron beam position enabled the accurate subtraction of the scattering profiles of the D$$_{2}$$O buffer and the sample container. Consequently, high quality information on protein dynamics could be extracted from dilute protein solutions.

A multi-domain protein can have various conformations in solution. Interactions with other molecules result in the stabilization of one of the conformations and change in the domain dynamics. SAXS, a well-established experimental technique, can be employed to elucidate the conformation of a multi-domain protein in solution. NSE spectroscopy is a promising technique for recording the domain dynamics in nanosecond and nanometer scale. Despite the great efforts, there are still under development. Thus, we quantitatively removed the contribution of diffusion dynamics and hydrodynamic interactions from the NSE data via incoherent scattering, revealing the differences in the domain dynamics of the three functional states of a multi-domain protein, MurD. The differences among the three states can be explained by two domain modes.

In the implement of the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F), there are many problems to be solved. Specially, the mitigation of the aging degradation by the corrosion of the structural materials is important to implement the decommissioning safely and continuously. However, there are limited data for the environmental factors of corrosion in 1F, and the condition of 1F is continuously changing. So, the literature data for the water radiolysis and the corrosion under irradiation are listed as the database of corrosion under irradiation in this report. And the new obtained radiolysis and corrosion data, which have not been reported in the literature and will be required in the decommissioning of 1F, are reported.

Incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering (iQENS) is a fascinating technique for investigating the internal dynamics of protein. However, both low flux of neutron beam and absence of analytical procedure for extracting the internal dynamics from iQENS profile have been obstacles for studying it under physiological condition (in solution). Thanks to the recent development of neutron source, spectrometer and computational technique, they enable us to decouple internal dynamics, translational and rotational diffusions from the iQENS profile. The internal dynamics of two proteins: globular domain protein (GDP) and intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) in solution were studied. It was found that the average relaxation rate of IDP was larger than that of GDP. Through the detailed analyses on their internal dynamics, it was revealed that the fraction of mobile H atoms in IDP was much higher than that in GDP. Interestingly, the fraction of mobile H atoms was closely related to the fraction of H atoms on highly solvent exposed surfaces. The iQENS study presented that the internal dynamics were governed by the highly solvent exposed amino acid residues depending upon protein molecular architectures.

Minerals and rocks exhibit various isotope compositions depending on their origins and histories. In interpreting their isotopic variations, the equilibrium isotope fractionation factor is a key because it depends on the environment parameters such as temperature. Recent studies have shown that the effect of pressure on the isotope fractionation, which was considered negligible compared to temperature, is significant under the conditions of the Earth's interior. In this article we review recent advances in experimental studies to determine the isotope fractionation of iron and hydrogen at high pressure over several GPa, discussing their issues and future perspectives.

We give a simple explanation of ordinary differential equations which constitutes the theoretical basis for the engineering. We explain some key concepts of ordinary differential equations, including boundary value problems, simultaneous differential equations and qualitative theorem.

To evaluate the effect of oxidants, which are formed by radiolysis of water under gamma ray irradiation, on the corrosion of a carbon steel in humid environment, ozone was introduced as a model oxidant in to humidity-controlled air at 50$$^{circ}$$C in a thermo-hygrostat chamber. Corrosion monitoring was performed by using an Atmospheric Corrosion Monitor-type (ACM) sensor consisting of a carbon steel anode and an Ag cathode. The output current of the ACM sensor was increased with the increase in relative humidity and it was obviously increased with the increase in the introduced ozone concentration at each relative humidity. The results indicate that ozone accelerates the corrosion of the carbon steel. The effect of ozone on the corrosion acceleration is attributed to the fast reduction reaction and fast dissolution reaction in to water compared to that of oxygen.

The structure of hydrous amorphous SiO$$_{2}$$ is fundamental to investigate the effects of water on the physicochemical properties of oxide glasses and magma. The hydrous SiO$$_{2}$$ glass with 13 wt.% D$$_{2}$$O was synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions and its structure was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction experiments at pressures of up to 10 GPa and room temperature. This hydrous glass is separated into a SiO$$_{2}$$ rich major phase and a D$$_{2}$$O rich minor phase. Medium-range order of the hydrous glass shrinks compared to the anhydrous SiO$$_{2}$$ glass due to disruption of SiO$$_{4}$$ linkage by formation of Si-OD deuterioxyl, while the pressure response is similar. Most of D$$_{2}$$O molecules are in the small domains and hardly penetrate into SiO$$_{2}$$ major phase.

The results of an international review of separation processes for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) recycling in future closed fuel cycles with the evaluation of Technology Readiness Level are reported. This study was made by the Expert Group on Fuel Recycling Chemistry (EGFRC) organised by the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A unique feature of this study was that processes were classified according to a hierarchy of separations aimed at different elements within spent fuel (uranium; uranium-plutonium co-recovery; minor actinides; high heat generating radionuclides) and also the Head-end processes, used to prepare the SNF for chemical separation, were included. Separation processes covered both wet (hydrometallurgical) and dry (pyro-chemical) processes.

The high-intensity proton accelerator adopts a charge exchange injection scheme, which injects with exchanging from negative Hydrogen ion to proton by using carbon foil. This scheme can realize high intensity proton beam but the uncontrolled beam losses occur by scattering at the foil. Additionally, the beam collision at the foil may cause the break itself. Therefore, a new injection scheme for higher intensity is needed as an alternative to the foil. We newly propose and develop a laser stripping injection scheme. At the first step, we propose a proof-of-principle (POP) experiment of the scheme in J-PARC and develop a laser system. In this presentation, we will introduce the laser stripping injection scheme and describe an overview of a POP experiment. We will report a current status of the laser system.

Now-a-days, promotion of life science by utilizing neutron (neutrons biology) is highly demanded in our country, following installation and improvement of high quality and intensity neutron sources at J-PARC and JRR-3. Aiming at accelerating development of neutrons biology in our country, an international workshop "Neutron biology for next generation" was held as a J-PARC Workshop at Ibaraki Quantum Beam Research Center from 22 March to 23 March in 2017. In the workshop, latest instruments, new-fashioned methodologies, recent scientific results and future perspectives were extensively discussed by domestic neutron instrumental scientists and domestic/foreign neutron biologists. This is a report of the workshop summarized by organizers.

Laboratory-2 of the Okuma Analysis and Research Center will be used for the technological development of techniques to treat and dispose fuel debris, etc. The specific analytical content and its importance has been discussed by an experts committee in FY 2016. The committee regarded fuel debris retrieval and criticality control related topics as the most important content. As a result, it will be a priority to introduce equipment to perform examination such as shape and size measurement, compositional and nuclide analysis, hardness and toughness test, and radiation dose rate measurement. In addition, since sample will have high dose rates (1 Sv/h or more) at the time of reception, hot cells with enough radiation shielding ability will be used. In the hot cell, the pre-processing will be performed, such as cutting and dissolution of samples. Processed samples will be examined in concrete cells, steel cells, glove boxes and fume hoods. Detail design of Laboratory-2 started on FY 2017.
