An iodine-sulfur process offers the potential for mass producing hydrogen with high-efficiency, and it uses high-temperature heat sources, including HTGR, solar heat, and waste heat of industries. R&D tasks are essential to confirm the integrity of the components that are made of industrial materials and the stability of hydrogen production in harsh working conditions. A test facility for producing hydrogen was constructed from corrosion-resistant components made of industrial materials. For stable hydrogen production, technical issues for instrumental improvements (i.e., stable pumping of the HIx solution, improving the quality control of glass-lined steel, prevention of I$$_{2}$$ precipitation using a water removal technique in a Bunsen reactor) were solved. The entire process was successfully operated for 150 h at the rate of 30 L/h. The integrity of components and the operational stability of the hydrogen production facility in harsh working conditions were demonstrated.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting R&D on the thermochemical iodine-sulfur (IS) process for nuclear-powered hydrogen production. The IS process is one of the promising candidates of heat application of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. JAEA fabricated main chemical reactors made of industrial structural materials and confirmed their integrity in practical corrosive environments in the IS process. Based on the results of these confirmation tests, JAEA have constructed a 100 NL/h-H$$_{2}$$-scale test facility made of industrial structural materials. In this report, we succeeded in extending the hydrogen production time from 8 hours to 31 hours by developing a stable hydrogen iodide solution transfer technology in a continuous hydrogen production test. In addition, using the fracture test data of the ceramic specimen, an equation for estimating the strength of the ceramic component was developed.

A combination of a petawatt laser and nuclear physics techniques can crucially facilitate the measurement of exotic nuclei properties. With numerical simulations and laser-driven experiments we show prospects for the Laser-driven Exotic Nuclei extraction-acceleration method proposed in [M. Nishiuchi et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 033107 (2015)]: a femtosecond petawatt laser, irradiating a target bombarded by an external ion beam, extracts from the target and accelerates to few GeV highly charged short-lived heavy exotic nuclei created in the target via nuclear reactions.

Both equilibrium and non-equilibrium charge-state distributions were studied experimentally for 2.0 MeV/u carbon ions after passing through carbon foils. Measured charge-state distribution established the equilibrium at a target thickness of 10 $$mu$$g/cm$$^{2}$$ and this remained unchanged until a maximum target thickness of 98 $$mu$$g/cm$$^{2}$$. The equilibrium charge-state distribution, the equilibrium mean charge-state, and the width and skewness of the equilibrium distribution were compared with predictions using existing semi-empirical formulae as well as simulation results, including the ETACHA code. It was found that charge-state distributions, mean charge states, and distribution widths for C$$^{2+}$$, C$$^{3+}$$, and C$$^{4+}$$ incident ions merged into quasi-equilibrium values at a target thickness of 5.7 $$mu$$g/cm$$^{2}$$ in the pre-equilibrium region and evolved simultaneously to the "real equilibrium" values for all of the initial charge states, including C$$^{5+}$$ and C$$^{6+}$$ ions. Two kinds of simulation, ETACHA and solution of rate equations taking only single electron transfers into account, were used, and both of them reproduced the measured charge evolution qualitatively. The quasi-equilibrium behavior could be reproduced with the ETACHA code, but not with solution of elementary rate equations.

Experimental demonstration of multi-charged heavy ion acceleration from the interaction between the ultra-intense short pulse laser system and the metal target is presented. The laser pulse of $$<$$10 J laser energy, 36 fs pulse width, and the contrast level of $$sim$$ 10$$^{10}$$ from 200 TW class Ti:sapphire J-KAREN laser system at JAEA is used in the experiment. Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated. This is achieved by the high intensity laser field of $$sim$$10$$^{21}$$Wcm$$^{-2}$$ interacting with the solid density target. The demonstrated iron ions with high charge to mass ratio (Q/M) is difficult to be achieved by the conventional heavy ion source technique in the accelerators.

Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated with a 200 TW femtosecond high-intensity laser irradiating a micron-thick Al foil with Fe impurity on the surface. An energetic low-emittance high-density beam of heavy ions with a large charge-to-mass ratio can be obtained, which is useful for many applications, such as a compact radio isotope source in combination with conventional technology.

Recently, a heavy-ion program as a future J-PARC project has been discussed. The main goals of the program are to explore the QCD phase diagram at highbaryon density with heavy ions up to uranium at the beam energies of around 10A GeV. We are planning to focus on the electron and muon measurements and rare probe search such asmulti-strangeness and charmed hadrons with high beam rates at J-PARC. A heavy-ionacceleration scheme has been considered with a new heavy-ion linac and a new booster ring, with the existing 3-GeV Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron, and the 30-GeV Main Ring synchrotron. An overview of the heavy-ion program and accelerator design, as well as physics goals and conceptual design of the experiments are presented.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting research and development on a thermochemical iodine-sulfur (IS) process. An examination is planned to verify the integrity of the components in the sulfuric acid decomposition section. A bayonet-type sulfuric acid decomposer made of SiC ceramics, a key component in the section, was test-fabricated. In parallel, a direct-contact heat exchanger (DCHX) is contemplated for use in the sulfuric acid decomposition section to simplify the process. Although the concept is very attractive, little is known about the heat and mass transfer behavior in the DCHX. Therefore, a test apparatus was constructed to measure the gas-phase mass transfer coefficients required for the optimal design of the DCHX. These coefficients of water were acquired and compared with an empirical correlation. The experimental data were in good agreement with those obtained from empirical correlation, and thus, the apparatus was confirmed to be reasonable.

The more accurate understanding and appropriate control of unsaturated area around tunnel excavated in deep rock-mass are required, for the geological isolation of radioactive waste project and also underground rock cavern storage project of liquefied petroleum gas. The numerical simulation of seepage flow is usually conducted to understand and evaluate the unsaturated zone around tunnel. The unsaturated parameters (such as moisture characteristic curve and relative permeability) and appropriate control of boundary condition are indispensable for the simulation. Authors developed methodology to measure unsaturated parameters utilizing the measuring method conventionally applied to soils and showed the efficiency of the method via a laboratory experiment. The idea of combining seepage face condition and flow rate fixed condition was derived, and the efficiency was shown in an model simulation. The two developments enabled the accurate estimation and understanding the evolution of unsaturated zone around tunnel.
