Konsoryu, 36(1), p.63 - 69, 2022/03

On free surface of a sodium cooled fast reactor, gas entrainment can be caused by free surface vortices, which may result in disturbance in core power. It is important to develop an evaluation model to predict accurately entrained gas flow rate. In this study, entrained gas flow rate a simple gas entrainment experiment is conducted with focusing on effect of pressure difference between upper and lower tanks. Pressure difference between upper and lower tanks are controlled by changing gas pressure in lower tank. As a result, it is confirmed that the entrained gas flow rate increases with increasing pressure difference between upper and lower tanks. By visualization of swirling annular flow in suction pipe, it is also observed that pressure drop in suction pipe increases with increase in entrained gas flow rate, which implies that entrained gas flow rate can be predicted by evaluation model based on pressure drop in swirling annular flow region.

The formation and the chemical characterization of single atoms of dubnium (Db, element 105), in the form of its volatile oxychloride, was investigated using the on-line gas phase chromatography technique, in the temperature range 350 - 600 $$^circ$$C. Under the exact same chemical conditions, comparative studies with the lighter homologs of group-5 in the Periodic Table clearly indicate the volatility sequence being NbOCl$$_3 > $$ TaOCl$$_3 geq$$ DbOCl$$_3$$. From the obtained experimental results, thermochemical data for DbOCl$$_3$$ were derived. The present study delivers reliable experimental information for theoretical calculations on the chemical properties of transactinides.

We report our experimental discovery of the transition temperature reaching 20 K in a Yb-based compound at ambient pressure. The Mn substitution at the Al site in an intermediate valence state of $$alpha$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ not only induces antiferromagnetic transition at a record high temperature of 20 K but also transforms the heavy-fermion liquid state in $$alpha$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ into a highly resistive metallic state proximate to a Kondo insulator.

Proceedings of 18th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (NURETH-18) (USB Flash Drive), p.6632 - 6642, 2019/08

In this paper, a mechanistic model is proposed to calculate the entrained gas flow rate by a free surface vortex. The model contains the theoretical equation of transient gas core elongation and the empirical equation of critical gas core length for gas bubble detachment. Based on those two equations, the entrained gas flow rate is calculated as the portion of the gas core elongated beyond the critical gas core length per unit time. Then, the mechanistic model was applied to the calculation of the entrained gas flow rate in a simple water experiment. As a result, it is confirmed that the entrained gas flow rate grows rapidly when the liquid (water) flow rate, which determine the strength of a free surface vortex, exceeds a certain threshold value.

In the design study on a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), a numerical simulation code named SYRENA has been developed in Japan Atomic Energy Agency to analyze the behavior of gas bubbles and/or dissolved gas in the primary coolant system. In the present study, the effect of the non-condensable gas entrainment at the free surface on the bubble and the dissolved gas behavior in the primary coolant system were investigated for a typical pool type reactor, and also effect of a dipped-plate (D/P) installed below the free surface in the reactor vessel to suppress the gas bubble entrainment into the primary coolant system was especially investigated. It was clarified that the D/P was influential to the non-condensable gas behavior and the molar flow rate of gas bubbles in the primary coolant system varies depending on the relationship between the gas entrainment rate at the free surface and the exchange flow rate through the D/P.

Parametric analysis of bubble and dissolved gas behavior in primary coolant system of sodium-cooled fast reactors

Matsushita, Kentaro; Ito, Kei*; Ezure, Toshiki; Tanaka, Masaaki

Proceedings of 27th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-27) (Internet), 9 Pages, 2019/05

A numerical simulation code named SYRENA has been developed in JAEA to analyze the behavior of entrained bubbles and dissolved gas in the primary coolant of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). In the present study, a flow network model of SYRENA to a hypothetical pool type reactor was developed and the non-condensable gas behavior was investigated through the comparison with that in the loop type reactor. The effect of the dipped-plate (D/P) tentatively introduced into the pool-type reactor on the gas behavior was investigated through the parametric analyses about the sodium exchange flow rate through the D/P and the gas entrainment rate at the free surface. It was suggested that the increase in the exchange flow rate through the D/P doesn't always work to decrease the bubble volume in the primary coolant system.

Proceedings of 11th New Opportunities for Better User Group Software (NOBUGS 2016) (Internet), p.76 - 79, 2016/10

The public beamlines in MLF, J-PARC carry out many kinds of measurements and produce huge experimental data by users. It is important to be user-friendly and automated control software for efficient measurements. We have developed the MLF standard instrument control software framework "IROHA2". IROHA2 consists of the device control server to control and monitor each device, the instrument management server to authenticate a user, manage a measurement and configure an instrument setup, the sequence management server to do an automatic measurement and the integrate control server to unify instrument control and monitoring. Because each software component of IROHA2 has a web interface, we are able to use its all functions under multi-platform environment via a web browser. IROHA2 is also connected to and cooperated with several other systems which are the experimental status system, the MLF integrated authentication system and the MLF business database.

Frustrated magnetic materials can remain disordered to the lowest temperatures. Such is the case for Ba$$_3$$CuSb$$_2$$O$$_9$$, which is magnetically anisotropic at the atomic scale but curiously isotropic on mesoscopic length and time scales. We find that the frustration on the triangular lattice is imprinted in a nanostructured honeycomb lattice of Cu$$^{2+}$$ ions that resists a coherent static Jahn-Teller distortion. The resulting two-dimensional random-bond spin-1/2 system on the honeycomb lattice has a broad spectrum of spin-dimer like excitations and low-energy spin degrees of freedom that retain.

Sakasai, Kaoru; To, Kentaro; Nakamura, Tatsuya; Harjo, S.; Moriai, Atsushi; Ito, Takayoshi; Abe, Jun; Aizawa, Kazuya; Soyama, Kazuhiko; Katagiri, Masaki*; et al.

Proceedings of 19th Meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Sources (ICANS-19) (CD-ROM), 5 Pages, 2010/07

Neutron detectors for Engineering Materials Diffractometer, named TAKUMI, at J-PARC have been developed under international cooperation between Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), and installed successfully at the end of March 2009. The detector size was 805$$times$$1370$$times$$217 mm which was about 1.5 times larger than those installed in ENGIN-X, ISIS facility, RAL. Neutrons are detected based on a nuclear reaction of $$^{6}$$Li(n, $$alpha$$)$$^{3}$$H using ZnS/$$^{6}$$LiF scintillator. The data acquisition electronics and decoding module were also manufactured. The overall performances of the detectors have been tested using various sources. The results showed that the detectors had good performances such as a position resolution of 3 mm, a neutron detection efficiency of more than 50% at 1 ${AA}$-neutrons, and a $$gamma$$-ray sensitivity of less than 10$$^{-6}$$ at 1.3 MeV-$$gamma$$-ray by $$^{60}$$Co source, which met the requirements of TAKUMI, and they will be presented at the meeting.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Europium isotopic composition could be a good probe to investigate the neutron capture process in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (AGB stars) and/or supernovae, because the $$^{151}$$Sm and $$^{153}$$Sm branchings are sensitive to the neutron densities and temperature. Here, we report Eu isotopic analyses of single SiC grains from primitive meteorites using the sensitive high resolution ion microprobe. The results are compared with Eu isotopic ratios predicted from the s-process model of AGB stars. The observed Eu isotopic composition of SiC grains place constraints on s-process conditions such as the temperature and neutron densities in AGB stars.
