A set of technology, including acid dissolving, has to be established for the analysis of content of elements/nuclides in the fuel debris samples. In this project, a blind test was performed for the purpose of clarifying the current level of analytical accuracy and establishing the alternative methods in case that the insoluble residue remains. Overall composition of the simulated fuel debris (homogenized powder having a specific composition) were quantitatively determined in the four analytical institutions in Japan by using their own dissolving and analytical techniques. The merit and drawback for each technique were then evaluated, based on which a tentative flow of the analyses of fuel debris was constructed.

The accident of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. occurred due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sanriku offshore earthquake, of 9.0 magnitude and the accompanying tsunami. As a result, large amount of radioactive materials was released into the environment. Under these circumstances, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting "Long-term Assessment of Transport of Radioactive Contaminants in the Environment of Fukushima" concerning radioactive materials released in environment, especially migration behavior of radioactive cesium since November 2012. This report is a summary of the research results that have been obtained in environmental dynamics research conducted by JAEA in Fukushima Prefecture.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of the nuclear and radiation professional engineers

Sasaki, Satoru

Hoshasen, 41(2), p.89 - 92, 2016/03

Professional Engineer is the national qualification stipulated by the Professional Engineer Act. A Professional Engineer in this Act means a person who conducts business on matters of planning, research, design, analysis, testing, evaluation or guidance thereof, which requires application of extensive scientific and technical expertise, and has three obligation and two responsibility related to engineer ethic. A technical discipline for nuclear and radiation technology in 2004, was established for the purpose of upgrading the skills of engineers in nuclear technology fields, utilizing their ability in nuclear safety regulation fields, and further strengthening safety management system in each entity. The activity of the nuclear and radiation professional engineers for the past 10 years was evaluated. For the next ten years, awareness of the role of the professional engineer to talk with general public is needed, and it is important to continue professional development.

What nuclear and radiation professional engineers should do for the sake of people after the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Sasaki, Satoru

Gijutsushi, 27(3), p.12 - 15, 2015/03

There seem to be a problem, though, the people tend to take safety and relief (Anzen-Anshin) as the same concept, without correctly understanding the concept of risk. It is an important issue, then, for the specialists of science and technology how to secure safety as well as how to inform the public about safety. Here I consider what nuclear and radiation professional engineers should do to transfer the information on safety to achieve Anshin (relief) among the public in Japan after the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

Validation of surface-based hydrochemical investigation and the impact of underground facility construction at Horonobe URL

Amano, Yuki; Nanjo, Isao; Murakami, Hiroaki; Yabuuchi, Satoshi; Yokota, Hideharu; Sasaki, Yoshito; Iwatsuki, Teruki

Chikasui Gakkai-Shi, 54(4), p.207 - 228, 2012/11

We verified the surface-based hydrochemical investigation for deep underground at Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) at Horonobe, Hokkaido, Japan, and identified the hydrochemical changes during the URL construction. The evaluation of the relationship between the number of borehole and understanding of water chemistry suggests that three basic borehole investigations and additional borehole for high permeable geological structure (fault and fractured zone) are required to illustrate cross-sectional hydrochemical distribution including the uncertainty in kilometers scale survey line. The observation and numerical analysis of hydrochemical variation (salinity, pH, ORP) around URL indicate that the groundwater pressure and the salinity in the vicinity of high permeable geological zone are varying due to groundwater inflow into the drift. The variation was consistent with the prediction reported previously. These results are considered to be referred to the management during surface-based investigation and construction of underground facility at the other sedimentary rock area.
