Reduction in the fault rate of high voltage power supply for klystrons by using Veto circuit in the J-PARC Linac

Hori, Toshihiko; Shinozaki, Shinichi; Sato, Fumiaki; Fukui, Yuji*; Futatsukawa, Kenta*

Proceedings of 12th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.643 - 646, 2015/09

We are making efforts to decrease the fault rate of the high voltage power supplies for 324 MHz klystron. A new Veto module has been developed to prevent the 25 Hz trigger fan out module from malfunction due to the klystron discharge. As the result of installing the Veto module to the SDTL#16 klystron station, the klystron had never stopped for two months operation although the discharge occurred forty-two times during the operation. It confirmed that the installation of the Veto module is extremely useful to operate the klystron stably.

Proceedings of 12th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1317 - 1320, 2015/09

In the J-PARC linac, an RF deflector installed in 3-MeV Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT1) is used to kick the unnecessary beam and the intermediate-pulse like a comb is created. The kicked beam leads to a scraper downstream the RF deflector and lose all kinetic energy. When the beam current increases to 50 mA of the design value, the heat load of a scraper to irradiate the kicked beam increases and its surface is predicted to be damaged. Therefore, we are preparing the tandem scrapers to reduce the damage. The half of the kicked beam leads to a scraper and the residual is to the other. The chopping operation is achieved by rotating the phase of the RF deflector in the periodic cycles by the LLRF system. We will introduce the phase rotation system and the test results.

We performed a beam test of a new radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ III) for the beam current upgrade of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. First, the conditioning of RFQ III was conducted, and after 20 h of conditioning, RFQ III became very stable with a nominal peak power and duty factor of 400 kW and 1.5%, respectively. An off-line beam test was subsequently conducted before installation in the accelerator tunnel. The transmission, transverse emittance, and energy spread of the 50-mA negative hydrogen beam from RFQ III were measured and compared with simulation results. The experiment and simulation results showed good agreement; therefore, we conclude that the performance of RFQ III conforms to its design.

This report describes the present status of the klystron power supply systems for the J-PARC linac. The systems for the 181 MeV linac were operated from September to May. A few breakdowns were occurred, and are described in this report. The new systems for the upgrade of the linac from 181MeV to 400 MeV have been installed until now, and the 3 HVDCPSs and the 3 anode modulators of the new systems have been operated. All the systems for 400 MeV linac will be operated in this autumn.

Environmental radiation monitoring around the Tokai Reprocessing Plant has been performed by the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories, based on "Safety Regulations for the Reprocessing Plant of Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Chapter IV - Environmental Monitoring". This annual report presents the results of the environmental monitoring and the dose estimation to the hypothetical inhabitant due to the radioactivity discharged from the plant to the atmosphere and the sea during April 2011 to March 2012. In this report, some data include the influence of the accidental release from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on Tokyo Electric Power Co. in March 2011.

We performed a high-power test of a new radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ II) for the J-PARC linac. RFQ II was developed as a spare RFQ because the operating J-PARC RFQ has suffered from a sparking problem. First, the conditioning of RFQ II was carried out; after 50 h of conditioning, RFQ II became very stable with a nominal power and duty of 330 kW and 3%, respectively. Next the thermal properties were measured because the resonant frequency of RFQ II is tuned by changing the temperature of the cooling water. The frequency response was measured and compared to finite-element method simulation results, confirming that the simple two-dimensional model reproduces the experimental data well. The differences in the field distribution with changes in the rf loading and the cooling-water temperature were also measured, and no serious field distortion was observed. Therefore, we conclude that RFQ II can perform well as a high-power rf cavity.

Progress of antenna development of the Electron Cyclotron Range of Frequency system for JT-60 SA is presented. Capability of pulse length of 100 s, which requires active cooling for mirrors, and flexibility of beam injection angles in both poloidal and toroidal directions are required for the antenna with high reliability. Mechanical and structural design works of the launcher (antenna and its support with steering structure) based on a linear motion antenna concept are in progress. The key component is a long-stroke bellows which enables to alter poloidal injection angle and a bellows which enables to alter toroidal injection angle. Using a newly fabricated mock-up of the steering structure, it was confirmed that the antenna was mechanically realized for poloidal and toroidal injection angle ranges of -10 to +45$$^{circ}$$ and -15 to +15$$^{circ}$$, respectively. Those angles are consistent with angles required in JT-60SA. The results of thermal and structural analyses are also presented.

A new gyrotron operation technique to increase oscillation efficiency was developed on the JT 60 ECRF system. The electron pitch factor was optimized by controlling anode voltage within 0.1 s after the start of the operation. By applying this technique, the gyrotron output power of 1.5 MW for 4 s was recorded, for the first time. The reduced collector heat load at 1.5 MW operations was reduced by 20% and it will be acceptable for longer pulse operation. A new gyrotron with an improved mode converter was developed in order to demonstrate reduction of the stray radiation which had limited the pulse length. The stray radiation was reduced to 1/3 of that of the original gyrotron. A conditioning operation of the improved gyrotron is proceeding up to 31 s at 1 MW. These progresses significantly contribute to enhancing the high power and long pulse capability of the ECRF system toward JT 60SA.

Proceedings of 8th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), 3 Pages, 2011/08

We will report about status of linac 400 MeV upgrade program and northeast Japan earthquake restoration. On March 11, the linac suffered serious damage as consequence of the earthquake, and was shuttled down for long term. Linac RF group restores the facilities and is accomplishing 400 MeV upgrade at the same time.
