Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:21.21(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)To reveal the decomposition mechanism with temperature under high-pressure, crystal structure of a hydrogrossular, katoite CaAl(OD) has been studied by in-situ neutron diffraction at 8 GPa. Although unusual expansion behavior was discerned at 200-400C, the unit cell was continuously expanded up to 850C. At 900C, katoite was decomposed, indicating that pressure strongly increases dehydration temperature from 300C to 900C. On release of pressure, the katoite reappear together with corundum and portlandite. At 8 GPa, CaO and AlO polyhedra expand with temperature up to 850C by about 8% and 13%, respectively. On the other hand, tetrahedral interstices are isotopically squeezed by about 10%: due to the expansion of above polyhedra. The neighboring D-D distance remains almost unchanged in this temperature range, while the O-D bond distance shrinks drastically just before decomposition. This finding suggests that the shortening of O-D distance caused by the D-D repulsion destabilizes the O-D bond, which induces the thermal decomposition of katoite.

JAEA has been conducting the Instructor Training Program (ITP) since 1996 under the auspices of MEXT to contribute to human resource development in currently 11 Asian countries in the field of radiation utilization for seeking peaceful use of nuclear energy. ITP consists of Instructor Training Course (ITC), Follow-up Training Course (FTC) and Nuclear Technology Seminars. In the ITP, trainings or seminars relating to technology for nuclear utilization are held in Japan by inviting nuclear related people from Asian countries to Japan and after that, the past trainees are supported during FTC by dispatching Japanese specialists to Asian countries. News Letter is also prepared to provide the broad range of information obtained through the trainings for local people near NPPs in Japan. The present report describes the activities of FY2014 ITP and future challenges for improving ITP more effectively.

Analysis of the electrostatic potential distribution revealed the concerted enhancement of the electronic polarization of the As ions and the carrier redistribution.

To avoid the difficulty of determinations due to the flux pinning, we developed a novel method using a miniature hall-sensor array which can evaluate the local magnetic induction ai each sensor position. The hall sensor which is placed on the edge of the crystal clearly resolves the first flux penetration from the Meissner state. The temperature dependence of for is well scaled by the in-plane penetration depth and is consistent with a full-gap superconducting state. The anistropy of at low temperatures is estimated to be 3, which is much smaller than of . This indicates the multiband superconductivity, in which the active bands for superconductivity are more two-dimensional.

Critical-state like flux distributions and the magnitude and temperature dependence of the critical current demonstrate bulk vortex pinning by oxygen vacancies at all temperatures.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (NISA) has renewed its regulatory role and its need for regulatory support research on radioactive waste management, with recent circumstances of radioactive waste management in Japan being taken into consideration. In response, a technical supporting organization, the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES), in 2009 released the five-year research plan "Regulatory Support Research Plan on Radioactive Waste Management 2010-2014", in cooperation with the research institutes of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). In October 2007, all three parties signed an agreement of cooperative study on geological disposal, which facilitated joint studies and exchanges of staff, data, and results. One of the ongoing joint studies has focused on regional-scale hydrogeological modeling using JAEA's Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.
