This paper provides an overview of plant system studies to establish a common technical view for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor concept between France and Japan based on ASTRID600 and the new concept with downsized output called ASTRID150. One of important issues on a reactor structure design is to enhance seismic resistance to be tolerable against strong earthquake such that postulated in Japan. A concept of High Frequency Design is shared, and the design options related to HFD have been examined and design recommendations are established. In addition, this paper include results of studies for a steam generator, a decay heat removal system, a fuel handling system and a containment vessel.

The authors are carrying out conceptual design studies for a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor. There are main challenges such as measures against severe earthquake in Japan, thermal hydraulic in a reactor vessel (RV), a decay heat removal system design. When the JP-pool SFR of 650 MWe is installed in Japan, it shall be designed against the severe seismic conditions. Additionally, a newly three-dimensional seismic isolation system is under development.

A next-generation SFR in Japan has adopted an advanced dry cleaning process which consists of the following steps, argon gas blowing to remove the metallic residual sodium on the FA, moist argon gas blowing to deactivate the residual sodium, and direct storage in the SFP. This three-step process increases economic competitiveness and reduces waste products thanks to a waterless process. In this R&D work, performance of the dry cleaning process has been investigated.

The levelized cost of electricity is one of key indicator to evaluate economic competitiveness of energy systems. This report estimated the levelized cost of SFR system considering additional safety measures identified after the 1F incident and social cost, using major calculation tools: G4-ECONS and the calculation tool developed by the Governmental WG in Japan (CEWG-tool). The calculation results of G4-ECONS showed that the additional safety measures raise 160% of levelized cost in the case of the safety enhanced SFR system with 1500 MWe of twin looped cooling system. As a result of calculation with 3% discount rate and social cost, the levelized cost of the safety enhanced SFR system with 1200 MWe of Single looped cooling system was estimated 84 mills/kWh by CEWG-tool. This result is almost equal to the estimated levelized cost of similar standard LWR system, and it was indicated the economic competitiveness of the future SFR system.

Improvement of economic competitiveness is a part of key requirement in the project. By adopting innovative technologies to reduce plant commodities, JSFR could achieve economic competitiveness compared with LWR. After the Fukushima-Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plants accident, safety enhancement measures were added on LWR in Japan mainly against external hazards. In parallel, Safety Design Criteria and Guidelines (SDC/SDG) for SFR were constructed in the framework of Generation IV international forum. Design studies of JSFR were carried out responding to GIF SDC/SDG and lessons learn from the Fukushima accident. This reports an impact of recent safety design enhancements on JSFR construction cost. Safety design enhancement adopted in JSFR.

A next generation SFR in Japan has adopted an advanced dry cleaning system which consists of the argon gas blowing process to reduce the amount of metallic residual sodium remaining on spent fuel assemblies. This paper describes experimental and analytical work focusing on the amount of residual sodium remaining on a fuel pin bundle before and after the argon gas blowing process. The experiments were conducted using a sodium test loop and a short specimen consisting of a 7 pin bundle. The effects of the blowing gas velocity and the blowing time were quantitatively analyzed in the experiments. On the basis of these experimental results, evaluation models predicting the amount of the residual sodium were constructed.

This paper presents a design of Curie Point Electro-Magnet (CPEM) which will be installed as a passive shutdown system for a French Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (ASTRID) development program which is conducted in collaboration between France and Japan. To confirm CPEM design validity, a qualification program for CPEM is developed on the basis of past comprehensive test series of Self-Actuated Shutdown System (SASS) in Japan. The main outcome of this paper is results of holding force tests in hot gas, which satisfy design requirements. Moreover, the result of a numerical magnetic field analysis showed the same tendency as that of the holding force test.

The JAEA model enables calculation of the processing amount and its composition in each facility by simulating mass-flow, and has function to evaluate economics based on the processing amount. In this report, to identify the difference in evaluation methods between the JAEA model and an internationally-authorized code, and verify its calculation functions, the generation cost of SFR system was evaluated using the JAEA model and the G4-ECONS. Consequently, it was clarified that the JAEA model is influenced to higher degree by the discount rate. When the present value was not taken into account, the results of both methods were quite similar, but it was found that the sensitivity of the load factor is relatively larger the G4-ECONS than in the JAEA model.

In a fuel handling system (FHS) of a sodium-cooled fast reactor, it is necessary to reduce residual sodium on a spent fuel subassembly before storing at a spent fuel water-pool (SFP) in order to minimize design loads. Although the wet cleaning process adopted on MONJU could eliminate almost all of residual sodium, a large amount of radioactive liquid waste occurs and it needs long duration of cleaning treatment and large plant commodities. On the other hand, Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor adopted an advanced dry cleaning system which consists of roughly blowing massive sodium on the fuel subassembly out by 300C argon gas, inactivation of residual sodium to NaOH by moist argon gas and directly immersion into the SFP to achieve economic competitiveness and waste reduction. This paper reports current status of recent R&D activities to demonstrate a performance of the dry cleaning process in Japan which are for improvement of the cleaning performance and optimizing the FHS design.

Japan sodium cooled fast reactor is the advanced loop type reactor developing in Japan. After the Fukushima-Dai-ichi NPP accident, system enhancement against severe accident have been investigated mainly for residual decay heat removal system, spent fuel storage system and emergency power sources in order to satisfy the safety design criteria for Generation IV SFR. This paper describes principle of the building layout design and the actual approach to be consistent with the recent design enhancement in JSFR. From the perspective of greater ability to withstand severe events, the principles of the building layout design as the measures against aircraft attack and the consequential fire, and tsunami are introduced in order to avoid local event initiating and simultaneous redundant failure of the safety grade facilities and could achieve lowering risk of the loss of all stuck and maintaining the essential power supply.

Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:9.74(Nuclear Science & Technology)Responding to the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F-NPP) accident, robustness of the fuel handling system (FHS) in Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) against the earthquake and the tsunami is studied for 2010 design version. In the earthquake estimation, the margin of seismic resistance and the sloshing in Ex-vessel fuel storage tank (EVST) against the earthquake of the 1F-envelop condition was estimated. In terms of the tsunami evaluation, the scenario to lead fuel subassemblies into the stable cooling state and the potential of the cooling system are introduced in case of the loss of emergency power supply. As a result, it showed that JSFR FHS in the original design already had the potential to prevent the release of radioactive material. Additionally, some design improvements of the EVST cooling system was introduced.
