In order to evaluate the mist behavior in the cover gas region of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) in good accuracy, turbulent model for Rayleigh-B$'e$nard convection (RBC) was selected, and the Reynolds-averaged number density and momentum equations for mist behavior were developed and incorporated into the OpenFOAM code. In the first stage, the RBC in a simple parallel channel was calculated using Favre-averaged k-$$omega$$ SST model. The average temperature and flow characteristics agreed well with results from DNS, LES, and experiments. Then the basic heat transfer experiment simulating the cover gas region of SFRs was calculated using this turbulent model and new mist models. The calculated average temperature distribution in the height direction and the mist mass concentration agreed well with the experimental results. We developed a method that could simulate the mist behavior in turbulent RBC environments and the cover gas region of SFRs with high accuracy.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is believed to be a primitive carbonaceous object. The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

We investigated the change in bacterial community structure after drilling boreholes, 09-V250-M02 and 09-V250-M03 in the 250 m depth research gallery of Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL). In 09-V250-M02, $$varepsilon$$-Proteobacteria was predominantly detected in the clone library analyses of the groundwater samples conducted immediately after drilling the borehole. All these $$varepsilon$$-Proteobacteria clones are closely related to ${{it Arcobacter spp}}$. which is known as sulfide oxidizing chemoautotrophic bacteria. After four years, the microbial structure was drastically changed and most detected OTUs were uncultured species such as candidate division OP9 and Chloroflexi relatives which are frequently detected in deep-sea sediments.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

Production of nano-sized platinum-particle films using low energy electron beams

Reduction of noble metal ions and subsequent production of noble metal particles in a solution has been performed as a radiation-induced precipitation (RIP) method using high energy ionizing radiation. Electron beams with energies below 300 keV have shorter penetration range and can irradiate at higher dose rates. Application of such low energy EBs to the RIP method has a possibility of producing film matters consisting of noble metal particles on the surface of the solution. In the present study, this possibility was examined using a few ten keV EBs for PtCl$$_{6}$$$$^{2-}$$ ion solutions. Black-colored film matters were produced on the surface of the sample solution after EB irradiation. Lower concentrations of ethanol such as 0.5v% accelerated the formation of Pt films on the sample solution. The films had network structure consisting of connected Pt particles with sizes of 2-5 nm.

Anaerobic microbial activity has a major influence on the subsurface environment, and should be considered in subsurface activities including the construction of radioactive waste repositories. We investigated denitrification and methanogenesis in anoxic groundwater from 140 m depth in two boreholes, where the redox potential fluctuated. The average maximum potential denitrification rates, measured under anaerobic conditions in the two boreholes using an $$^{15}$$N tracer. Methanogenesis candidates were detected by 16S rRNA gene analysis. Although the stable isotope signatures suggested that some of the dissolved methane was of biogenic origin, no potential for methane production was evident during the incubations. The groundwater at 140 m depth did not contain oxygen, had an Eh ranging from -144 to 6.8 mV, and was found to be a potential field for denitrification.

The gasochromic property of dehydrogenation-catalyst loaded tungsten trioxide (M/WO$$_{3}$$) powders was examined in exposure to gaseous cyclohexane under different kinds and contents of catalysts, catalyst temperatures, and cyclohexane concentrations. The change in the intensity of visible lights reflected from the M/WO$$_{3}$$ powders was in situ obtained using a portable visible-light spectrometer. The catalyst of Pt was a catalyst initiating dehydrogenation and the change of reflected light intensity at lower temperatures in comparison with the catalysts of Pd and Rh. Among 0.1, 0.5, and 1wt% Pt/WO$$_{3}$$ powders, the 0.5wt% Pt/WO$$_{3}$$ powders demonstrated large change of reflected lights. The heating of 0.5wt% Pt/WO$$_{3}$$ powders at temperatures higher than 130$$^{circ}$$C was required to visually detect cyclohexane at a concentration of 1v%, lower than the combustion lower limit (1.3v%).

Japan Atomic Energy Agency is the first to start the mass production of the TF conductors in Phase IV in March 2010 among the 6 parties who are procuring TF conductors in the ITER project. The conductor is cable-in-conduit conductor with a central spiral. A total of 900 Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands and 522 copper strands are cabled around the central spiral and then wrapped with stainless steel tape whose thickness is 0.1 mm. Approximately 60 tons of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands were manufactured by the two suppliers in December 2010. This amount corresponds to approximately 55% of the total contribution from Japan. Approximately 30% of the total contribution from Japan was completed as of February 2011. JAEA is manufacturing one conductor per month under a contract with two Japanese companies for strands, one company for cabling and one company for jacketing. This paper summarizes the technical developments including a high-level quality assurance. This progress is a significant step in the construction of the ITER machine.

To characterize the performance of the CS conductor, a CS conductor sample was tested in the SULTAN facility at CRPP. As a result of the cyclic test up to 1000 cycles, measured Tcs was in good agreement with the expected Tcs, which is calculated by the characteristics of the Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands and the designed strain. However, continuous degradation of Tcs was observed after 1000 cycles. The degradation of Tcs was around 0.6 K from 1000 cycles to 6000 cycles. On the other hand, the degradation of Tcs by cyclic operation is nearly 0.1 K from 1000 cycles to 10,000 cycles in the CS Insert test at JAEA in 2000. To investigate the causes for the degradation of Tcs, the following items are performed; (1) strain measurement by neutron diffraction, (2) strain measurement by sample cuttings, (3) strand position observation, (4) visual inspection on strands, (5) filament breakage observation, (6) modeling and calculation of the degradation. Detailed results will be presented and discussed.

An Investigation of microbial effect as biofilm formation on radionuclide migration

Since it was suggested that the microbes have ability to generate their biofilm in deep underground condition, we examined the effects of biofilm on radionuclide migration scenario. To estimate the effect on matrix diffusion, through diffusion experiment for a biofilm of Desulfovivrio desullfuricans were performed. The effective diffusion coefficient of the biofilm was 10$$^{-10}$$ m$$^{2}$$/s order which was about ten times smaller than that in free water. It is suggesting that the microbes and biofilm will not interfere with matrix diffusion as a retardation of radionuclide in rock.

Preparation of nano-sized platinum particles using low energy electron beams, and application to catalytic reaction

In the present study, the reduction of PtCl$$_{6}$$$$^{2-}$$ ions and subsequent formation of Pt particles were examined for a few tens keV EB irradiation of PtCl$$_{6}$$$$^{2-}$$ ion solution in the presence of 1-20wt% ethanol as an OH radical scavenger. As a result, the reduction of PtCl$$_{6}$$$$^{2-}$$ ions proceeded in whole solution by irradiating only the topmost surface layer of the solution, and these Pt particles with sizes of 2-5 nm would be produced as primary particles through reduction of PtCl$$_{6}$$$$^{2-}$$ ions. Moreover, these Pt particles were observed to have hydrogen dissociation activity and oxidation activity.
