Magnons and phonons are fundamental quasiparticles in a solid and can be coupled together to form a hybrid quasi-particle. However, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian of this particle are rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored, although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour and intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in non-collinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO$$_{3}$$ and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling termrequired to produce it.

The nature of the pseudogap phase of cuprate high-temperature superconductors is a major unsolved problem in condensed matter physics. We studied the commencement of the pseudogap state at temperature $$T^*$$ using three different techniques (angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, polar Kerr effect, and time-resolved reflectivity) on the same optimally doped Bi2201 crystals. We observed the coincident, abrupt onset at $$T^*$$ of a particle-hole asymmetric antinodal gap in the electronic spectrum, a Kerr rotation in the reflected light polarization, and a change in the ultrafast relaxational dynamics, consistent with a phase transition. Upon further cooling, spectroscopic signatures of superconductivity begin to grow close to the superconducting transition temperature ($$T_c$$), entangled in an energy-momentum dependent manner with the preexisting pseudogap features, ushering in a ground state with coexisting orders.

The crystal structure of the double-layered Ca$$_{3}$$Ru$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ has been studied by convergent beam electron diffraction and powder neutron diffraction. The temperature dependence of the diffraction pattern reveals that all the lattice constants jump at the first-order metal-nonmetal transition at 48 K without a change of the space group symmetry of Bb21m. In the neutron diffraction experiment, an additional magnetic reflection emerges below the Neel temperature, 56K. A possible model for this antiferromagnetic ordering is proposed, in which model magnetic moments align ferromagnetically within the double layer and antiferromagnetically between the double layers. This model reasonably explains the characteristic field dependence of the magnetoresistance observed at around 6 T.

Development of efficient HI processing scheme is important for attaining high thermal efficiency of hydrogen production by IS process. We are studying an application of electro-electrodialysis to pre-concentrate the HIx solution before distillation, which is supplied from the Bunsen reaction section. So far, feasibility of the pre-concentration was experimentally verified and also, by flowsheet analysis, the importance was clarified of improving the performance of membrane and electrode catalyst.

High efficiency flowsheet for thermochemical hydrogen production IS (Iodine-Sulfur) process is investigating. In order to establish the reference flowsheet that is concidering the recent experimental data and engineering investigation, steady state process simulation was done using process simulation code PRO/2 and thermochemical model/database(developed by OLI Systems, Inc.) which was extended for IS process. The results of parameter analyses and established reference flowsheet are reported.

Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$ is a well established example to be a spin-triplet and a time-reversal symmetry broken (TRSB) superconductor which are probed by NMR Knight shift measurement and zero-field muon spin relaxation measurement, respectively. Many experimental results show the unconventional feature of superconductivity and still much efforts are paid to the investigation Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$. Although TRSB is a key feature for understanding unique property of Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$, details are not known up to now. We will present our results of ZF and TF $$mu$$SR in Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$ and future plan of the research by using ultra slow muon microscope.

Muon knight shift in Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$

Higemoto, Wataru; Ito, Takashi; Yoshida, Yoshiyuki*; Baines, C.*

no journal, ,

It is believed that spin triplet superconductivity is realized in Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$. However, there are some objections for the spin triplet superconductivity. The spin triplet superconductivity is suggested mainly from NMR Knight shift measurements. Different form NMR, muon gives us the information completely inside the specimen. In our presentation, we report on the muon Knight shift measurement in Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$.
