Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:11.61(Physics, Multidisciplinary)An in-flight separator, BigRIPS, at RIBF in RIKEN provides each experiment with specific nuclides separated from many nuclides produced by projectile fragmentation or in-flight fission. In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

Times Cited Count:17 Percentile:86.67(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)In this study, for the understandings of Cesium (Cs) adsorption behavior on structure materials in severe accidents at a light water nuclear reactor, the chemical state of Cs and its distribution on the surface of SUS304 stainless steel (SS) with different Si concentration were investigated by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and scanning electron microscope / energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). As a result, it was found that Cs is selectively adsorbed at the site where Si distributes with high concentration. CsFeSiO is a dominant Cs products in the case of low Si content, mainly formed, while CsSiO and CsSiO are formed in addition to CsFeSiO in the case of high Si content. The chemical forms of the Cs compounds produced in the adsorption process on the SS surface has a close correlation with the concentration and chemical states of Si originally included in SS.

This ion source is based on resonance ionization of RI atoms captured in Ar gas. Because the ion source is located 70m away from lasers, we have developed an optical system for laser beam transport. This system can be controlled remotely when the ion source is not accessible because of high radiation level. The position of laser beam after transport is reasonably stable, and the transport efficiency is about 50%.

Ultrasonic wave reflection intensity of the wall of borehole drilled from bottom of the East Access Shaft in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory, Hokkaido, Japan, was obtained using an ultrasonic scanner (USS). In this paper, we compared results of USS observation with core logging data including core observation, optical digital scanner (ODS) observation, and result of Needle Penetration Index (NPI) tests. The results indicated that ultrasonic wave reflection intensity had a good correlation with other observation results. USS observation and NPI tests are useful techniques for determination of detailed rock mass classification.

So far, we clarified that X-ray irradiation induced cell killing by bystander effect mediated-secreted factor. This phenomenon was related with sphingomyelinase (SMase). In this study we analyzed mechanism of secreted SMase from irradiated cells after irradiation. SMase was detected in the culture medium after irradiation by SDS-PAGE. Then, SMase was detected in the exosome of culture medium, but not out of exosome after irradiation. This result indicates that SMase was secreted as exosome from the irradiated cells.

Of particular interest are mass measurements of r-process nuclei and trans-uranium nuclei. In such nuclei, the MRTOF can perform on par with or better than traditional Penning trap systems. We demonstrate that the MRTOF-MS is capable of accurately attaining relative mass precision of m/m 10 and describe it's utility with heavy, short-lived nuclei.

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:19.06(Optics)By introducing 13th- (61.7 nm) and 15th-order harmonics (53.4 nm) of femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm into an undulator of SCSS (SPring-8 Compact SASE Source) test accelerator at RIKEN, these harmonic pulses were amplified by a factor of more than 10 with a high contrast ratio through the interaction between accelerated electron bunches and the harmonic pulses. From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

We have demonstrated free-electron laser radiation seeded by high-order harmonics in the extreme-ultraviolet region. Strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 104 was observed with timing control of an electro-optical sampling technique.

High linear energy transfer (LET) radiation is important cosmic rays that has neurobiological effects: it is known to induce conditioned taste aversion, and suppress neurogenesis that may underlie cognitive impairment. However, the impact of high-LET radiation on other learning effects remains largely unknown. Here, we focus on kinetics of the radiation response for the salt chemotaxis learning (SCL) behavior in the nameatode, , because the SCL during the learning conditioning was modulated after low-LET -irradiation. Firstly, the SCL ability was examined following high-LET irradiation (C, 18.3 MeV/u, LET = 113 keV/m), revealing its dose-dependent decrease after high- and low-LET exposure. Next, we demonstrate that the SCL at the early phase of the learning conditioning is greatly affected by high- and low-LET irradiation, and interestingly, the magnitude of these effects by high-LET radiation was smaller than that by low-LET one. Moreover, the analysis of mutant showed that the G-protein subunit, GPC-1 is responsible for such early phase response. This study is the first to provide the evidence for the kinetics of changes in SCL after high-LET irradiation of C. .
