For a steady state operation of JT-60SA, a plasma feedback control using various diagnostic sensor signals plays an essential role. To realize this, Real Time Diagnostic Signals acquisition System, RTDS, which utilizes PC-based real-time OS "INtime", has been under consideration toward JT-60SA project. Moreover, long-time experiments more than 100 seconds will be planned in JT-60SA project. Therefore, real time monitoring will be required as an essential function that displays acquired diagnostic signals on real time during long-time experiment. This function will be also realized by utilizing RTDS.

The functions of JT-60 discharge control computer system and the data processing computer system will be integrated into a new JT-60SA supervisory control system to improve the operational efficiency of the JT-60 control computer system. In this report, we first show the necessary requirements for the new JT-60SA supervisory control system that should have high cost performance and maintenability. Next, overall system image of the new JT-60SA supervisory control system is presented and the necessary functions and the issues to be solved in the development are shown. Finally, the necessary manpower for this development and performance of the computer hardware, and the expected reduction of maintenance cost of the computer system are described.

We have developed a prototype of new mass data acquisition system (P-MDAS) that can perform a faster data acquisition. This system is based on a general-purpose PXI (Compact PCI) bus standard. In 2004, standalone vivifications on the performance of P-MDAS were carried out (8- channel ADC, hard disk streaming). In 2005 and 2006, we examined its performance under the following environments: under remote diagnostic control using optical communication interface, under multiple controller PCs, under multiple PXI boards to increase the number of channels, under a long duration of data acquisition (45 seconds) with a high sampling rate (1 MHz) and a high resolution (14 bit). At the same time, we developed a MDAS server (UNIX WS) and verified its performance on the data transfer to Inter-Shot Processor. We are planning to increase the number of channels and conduct a performance verification of overall data processing system (DPS) with 10 GB/Shot of data acquisition.

The design activity of JT-60SA (JT-60 Super Advanced) which is remodeled to a superconducting tokamak device has been starting under the JA-EU collaborative ITER-BA project. For the JT-60SA control system, the existing system should be reused as much as possible from the viewpoint of cost-effectiveness. We have just begun to discuss the configuration of the advanced Supervisory Control System (SVCS) including the following systems: (1) ultimately flexible real-time control system, (2) precise timing system enough to clarify cause and effect, and (3) safety shutdown control system. In this report, we present the design study of the JT-60SA SVCS with focusing on these systems.

JT-60U's diagnostic systems have been using CAMAC systems for their control and data acquisition. But the transient recorders used to store the diagnostic data are rather old and lack in memory expansion. Therefore, for a long pulse discharge of more than 15 seconds, data sampling rate must be reduced to cover the whole discharge period. The acquired data has, however, low time resolution and is sometimes insufficient for detailed analysis. To solve this problem, the transient recorders should be replaced with those having larger memory, but without modification to the existing data processing infrastructure. For this purpose, we have developed a new data acquisition system with SPARC CPU on VMEbus and the associated software, to retain the functionality of CAMAC control. We have applied this system to the existing bolometric diagnostics. In this paper, detail of design will be described.

Fusion research grid is an environment of collaborative researches using a network that connects scientists far apart and let them collaborate effectively over the difference in time and distance in a nuclear fusion research. Fundamental technology of Fusion research grid has been developed at JAEA in the VizGrid project under the e-Japan project at Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Remote research environments of experiments, diagnostics, analyses and communications were developed on Fusion research grid. We have developed prototype systems that include a remote experiment system, a remote diagnostics system, and a remote analysis system. All users can access these systems from anywhere because Fusion research grid does not required closed network like Super SINet to maintain security. The prototype systems were verified in experiments at JT-60U and their availability was confirmed.

Development of real-time measurement system of charge exchange recombination spectroscopy and its application to feedback control of ion temperature gradient in JT-60U

Real-time measurement system of the ion temperature profile has been developed for the feedback (FB) control of the ion temperature gradient (grad-$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$) with the filter charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) system in JT-60U. The rapid analytical scheme without non-linear least square fitting enables us to calculate the ion temperature with four spatial points every 10 ms using a real-time processor system. The FB control experiment of grad-$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ has been demonstrated in ELMy H-mode plasmas by use of the neutral beam injectors having different deposition profiles as actuators. Grad-$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ was controlled to the reference value in the ramp-down phase, however, it did not recovered in the ramp-up phase because the internal transport barrier or transport was affected by the ramp-down of grad-$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$. From the transient response analysis of grad-Ti, the increase in the central $$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ using the additional heating was required to recover the deteriorated grad-$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$.

In JT-60U the data processing system, providing the data acquisition, producing the diagnostic data base, and communicating with the JT-60U control system. The MSP-ISP was replaced by a new Inter-Shot Processor based on the UNIX-OS of a workstation (UNIX-ISP) in 2005. The performance of UNIX-ISP is 2 times as high as that of the MSP-ISP in a stand-alone test using the data conversion program of the CXRS data. Thus we can expect the reduction of the processing time by the optimization of the total sequence. For the remote experiment, we have developed a system called RMSVR with which we can set discharge parameters from the remote site, and thereby the consistency of input parameters is checked. The high security of the remote experiment system is established by the certification and the encrypted communication based on ITBL. A verification test between a university and JAEA Naka indicates that the system using the HTTPS protocol is suitable for the remote experiment.

Divertor density measurements using mm-wave interferometer in JT-60U

A mm-wave interferometer has been developed for divertor density measurements in JT-60U. The measurements performed for several plasma phases indicated the feasibility of the system except for the ELMy H-mode phase. In the ELMy H-mode phase, the signal intensity was significantly reduced probably due to refraction. A sharp drop in the divertor plasma density was found during a transition to the ELM free H-mode phase concomitant with a sharp drop in D$$_{alpha}$$ emission intensity. Low frequency fluctuation of $$sim$$1.5 kHz was observed in the divertor plasma density during the quiescent H-mode phase. Feedback control of the divertor plasma density was successfully demonstrated using the mm-wave interferometer as a real-time monitor and the gas-puffing from the bottoms of the W-shaped divertor as an actuator.

JT-60 data processing system (DPS) possesses three-level hierarchy. At the top level of hierarchy is JT-60 inter-shot processor (MSP-ISP), which is a mainframe computer, provides communication with the JT-60 supervisory control system and supervises the internal communication inside the DPS. The middle level of hierarchy has minicomputers and the bottom level of hierarchy has individual diagnostic subsystems, which consist of the CAMAC and VME modules. To meet the demand for advanced diagnostics, the DPS has been progressed in stages from a three-level hierarchy system, which was dependent on the processing power of the MSP-ISP, to a two-level hierarchy system, which is decentralized data processing system (New-DPS) by utilizing the UNIX-based workstations and network technology. This replacement had been accomplished, and the New-DPS has been started to operate in October 2005.

A large tokamak fusion device JT-60 is expected to explore more advanced tokamak discharge scenario towards the ITER and a future power reactor. We believe the following experimental issues are expected to be solved in JT-60. To clarify how to keep a steady-state plasma with high performance, and how to avoid plasma instabilities almost completely. By stimulus of this motivation, several essential development and modifications of plasma control and data acquisition systems have been performed in JT-60. In this report, we discuss the developments to improve the JT-60 plasma control and data acquisition systems. In addition, a future plasma control and data acquisition systems leading to a standard design for a power reactor is envisaged on the basis of the 20-year plasma operation experiences.

Recent RF experiments and application of RF waves to real-time control of safety factor profile in JT-60U

A real-time control system of safety factor (q) profile was developed in JT-60. This system, for the first time, enables 1) real time evaluation of q profile using local magnetic pitch angle measurement by motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic and 2) control of current drive (CD) location (rhoCD) by adjusting the parallel refractive index $$N_{rm //}$$ of lower-hybrid (LH) waves through the change of phase difference (dphi) of LH waves between multi-junction launcher modules. The method for q profile evaluation was newly developed, without time-consuming reconstruction of equilibrium, so that the method requires less computational time. The system evaluates q profile within every 10ms, which is much faster than current relaxation time, typically order of 1s. Safety factor profile by the real-time calculation agreed well with that by equilibrium reconstruction with MSE. From temporal evolution of q (or current) profile, we evaluate CD location in real-time, too. The control system controls rhoCD through $$N_{rm //}$$ (or directly dphi) in such a way to minimize difference between the real-time evaluated q profile and its reference profile. The real-time control system was applied to positive shear plasmas ($$q(0)sim 1$$), having plasma current of 0.6MA, toroidal field of 2.3T, and electron density of $$0.5times 10^{19}{rm m}^{-3}$$. In order to keep good coupling of LH waves to the plasma, gap between the launcher and the plasma surface was controlled to about 0.1m. The reference q profile was set to q(0)=1.3. The real-time q profile approached to the reference after application of real-time control; the controlled q profile was sustained for 3s, which was limited by injected LH power. RF experiments in JT-60U, such as stabilization of neo-classical tearing modes, plasma startup experiments, etc., are also presented.
