In a excavation of shafts and galleries in the deep underground for disposing radioactive waste, an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) is developed around the galleries and shafts owing to the stress redistribution. Since the characteristic changes of the rock mass in the EDZ affects the radionuclides migration behavior, it is important to understand the long-term behavior of the EDZ. Thus, we performed the in situ experiment to investigate the long-term behavior of EDZ as part of the collaborative research between Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in the 140m gallery in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory. In this research, we investigated the extent, mechanism of the change of hydro-mechanical characteristic, and long-term behavior of the EDZ on the basis of the comprehensive estimation of the results of the observation of the drift wall and the various investigations using boreholes such as geological investigation, the seismic and resistivity tomography, hydraulic test, water content monitoring, borehole loading test, convergence measurement, and so on. In addition, we clarified applicability and future tasks of the testing method used in this research for the investigation of the long-term behavior of the EDZ.

The polarized $$^{3}$$He filter, which polarizes neutrons due to a large neutron absorption cross section of $$^{3}$$He with strong spin selectivity, becomes a convenient neutron spin filter (NSF) because it is operated immediately after its installation in beam lines without any neutron beam adjustments. For realizing such the NSF, a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system is indispensable for monitoring $$^{3}$$He nuclear spin polarization ${it P}$ of the NSF. We have developed the flexible NMR system based on adiabatic fast passage (AFP) and pulse NMR methods by using their complementary features. In comparing with the values of ${it P}$ obtained by neutron transmission measurement at the beam line 10 of the J-PARC, we measured the correlations between the AFP and pulse NMR signals as changing condition of temperature, amplitude and applying period of the radio frequency field for the pulse NMR, and so on. As the results, we confirmed that our system would function enough as the ${it P}$ monitor.

We have synthesised the research results from Mizunami/Horonobe URLs and geo-stability projects in the second mid-term research phase. It could be used as technical bases for NUMO/Regulator in each decision point from sitting to beginning of disposal (Principal Investigation to Detailed Investigation Phase). High quality construction techniques and field investigation methods have been developed and implemented and these will be directly applicable to the National Disposal Program (along with general assessments of hazardous natural events and processes). It will be crucial to acquire technical knowledge on decisions of partial backfilling and final closure by actual field experiments in Mizunami/Horonobe URLs as main themes for the next phases.

The application of natural linear polysaccharide to green resists was demonstrated for electron beam (EB) and extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. Because of the water solubility of natural polysaccharides, the water spin-coating and water-developable processes realize an environmentally friendly manufacturing process for next-generation electronic devices. The developed green resist with a weight-average molecular weight of 83,000 and 70 mol % hydroxyl groups was found to have acceptable properties such as spin-coat ability on 200 mm wafers, pillar patterns of 100-400 nm with a high EB sensitivity of 10 $$mu$$ C/cm$$^{2}$$, etch selectivity with a silicon-based middle layer in CF$$_{4}$$ plasma treatment, and high prediction sensitivity to EUV region.

In polarized neutron experiments, it is interested in expanding measurable neutron energy region up to epithermal neutrons. For realizing this situation, a Polarized $$^{3}$$He Spin Flipper (PHSF) has a key role because it can polarize from cold to epithermal neutrons, and flip neutron spins by flipping the $$^{3}$$He nuclear spin direction. We have developed the portable PHSF consisting of a cylindrical glass cell filled with $$^{3}$$He gas which is installed a solenoid coil of 20 cm in diameter and 30 cm long. After polarizing the $$^{3}$$He gas by irradiating a laser light based on a SEOP technique, the PHSF is brought by hands to experimental areas with kept its polarization. We carried out the feasibility test on our portable PHSF in the MLF of J-PARC and demonstrated it worked well by evaluating flipping ratios of polarized neutrons and attempting to visualize magnetic fields generated by sample coils.

Depending on the direction of the external tangential momentum input, substantial changes in not only toroidal but also poloidal flows for the carbon impurity ions are observed at around the $$E$$$$_{r}$$-well region. The shear in the edge $$E$$$$_{r}$$ becomes wider in the co-NBI case, while the edge $$E$$$$_{r}$$-well becomes deeper in the counter-NBI case.

The unified effect of counter toroidal rotation and heating power on type-I ELMs was investigated in JT-60U tokamak. ELM frequency $$f_mathrm{ELM}$$ increased monotonically together with the power across the sepratrix $$P_mathrm{sep}$$ for all the cases of tangential NBs. However, dependence of $$f_mathrm{ELM}$$ on $$P_mathrm{sep}$$ was explicitly stronger than a proportional relation when the perpendicular NBs were injected. The toroidal rotation velocity at the H-mode pedestal $$V$$$$rm_T^{rm PED}$$ shifted continuously in counter direction when the perpendicular NBs were applied. At fixed values of $$V$$$$rm_T^{rm PED}$$, $$f_mathrm{ELM}$$ increased clearly in proportion to $$P_mathrm{sep}$$.

The Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project is planned to extend over a period 20 years. The investigations will be conducted in three phases, namely "Phase 1: Surface-based investigations", "Phase 2: Construction Phase" (investigations during construction of the underground facilities) and "Phase 3: Operation phase"(research in the underground facilities). This report summarizes the results of the investigations for the 2011 fiscal year (2011/2012). The investigations, which are composed of "Geoscientific research" and "R&D on geological disposal technology", were carried out according to "Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project Investigation Program for the 2011 Fiscal year". The results of these investigations, along with the results which were obtained in other departments of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), are properly offered to the implementations and the safety regulations. For the sake of this, JAEA has proceeded with the project in collaboration with experts from domestic and overseas research organisations.

At the Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC, an experiment of detecting a neutron polarizing ability caused by a neutron-nuclear (n-N) spin correlation term at a resonant peak of $$^{129}$$Xe is planned. The Xe gas having a high polarization under low magnetic field and room temperature by a spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) technique is expected to become a suitable target for verification of the neutron optical theorem (NOPT). We evaluated measurable quantities based on the NOPT, developed a polarized Xe gas system, and carried out a feasibility test of our apparatus. This paper reports on the present status of the experiment.

Edge pedestal characteristics in JET and JT-60U tokamaks under variable toroidal field ripple

The effect of TF ripple on the edge pedestal characteristics are examined in JET and JT-60U. By the installation of ferritic inserts, TF ripple was reduced from $$1%$$ to $$0.6%$$ in JT-60U. In JET, TF ripple was varied from $$0.1%$$ to $$1%$$ by feeding different currents to TF coils. The pedestal pressure was similar with reduced ripple in JT-60U. In JET, no clear difference of the pedestal characteristics was also observed. The edge toroidal rotation clearly decreased in counter direction by increased TF ripple. However, in JT-60U, the ELM frequency decreased by $$sim 20%$$ and the increased ELM loss power by $$30%$$ with reduced ripple. In JET, ELM frequency increases only slightly with increased TF ripple. From this inter-machine experiment, TF ripple less than $$1%$$ does not strongly affect the pedestal pressure. The effect of TF ripple on pedestal characteristics at lower collisionality close to ITER should be investigated as a next step study.

The graded energy deposition of heavy ion beam irradiation to polymeric materials was utilized to synthesize a novel proton exchange membrane (PEM) with the graded density of sulfonic acid groups toward the thickness direction. Stacked Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) films were irradiated by Xe$$^{54+}$$ ion beam with the energy of 6 MeV/u under a vacuum condition. Irradiated films were grafted with styrene monomer and then sulfonated. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabricated by the function graded PEM showed improved fuel cell performance in terms of voltage stability. It was expected that the function-graded PEM could control the graded concentration of sulfonic acid groups in PEM.

The research and development plan in Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory are summarized according to the 2nd Midterm Plan till 2014 fiscal year of JAEA. In this midterm, galleries and the infrastructures for the research and development up to the depth of 350 m are constructed by Private Financial Initiative (PFI). Additionally Phase 3: Operation phase at the galleries begins in parallel to Phase 2: Construction phase. In these phases various research and development including collaboration with other institutes are conducted at the galleries. Generallic applicable techniques on the subject of the investigation of geological environment, facility construction in deep underground and the reliability of geological deposal are developed during the phase. The feasibility and reliance of various technologies concerning geological disposal is demonstrated by widely opening the outcome to the public in the society.
