Rapid multi-nuclide identification method by simultaneous $$beta$$, $$gamma$$, and X-ray spectrum analysis

When analyzing samples that contain many radionuclides at various concentrations, such as radioactive waste or fuel debris, it is difficult to apply general spectrum analysis methods and is necessary to chemically separate each nuclide before quantifying it. The chemical separation is especially essential for analysis using a liquid scintillation counter (LSC). In this report, the authors explain the newly developed spectral determination method (SDM) in which the entire spectrum is fitted to quantify radioactivity of nuclides mixed in a sample. By applying the SDM to $$beta$$- and X-ray spectrum measured by LSC and $$gamma$$-ray spectrum measured by Ge detector simultaneously, the authors demonstrated that radioactivity of 40 radionuclides mixed in a sample at concentrations varying by two orders could be quantified, which is useful to simplify chemical separation process in radionuclide quantification.

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a radiotherapy for the treatment of intractable cancer. In BNCT precise determination of $$^{10}$$B concentration in whole blood sample before neutron irradiation is crucial for control of the neutron irradiation time and the neutron dosimetry. We have applied the Charged Particle Activation Analysis (CPAA) to non-destructive and accurate determination of $$^{10}$$B concentration in whole blood sample. The experiment was performed at JAEA Tandem Accelerator using an 8 MeV proton beam. The 478 keV $$gamma$$ ray of $$^{7}$$Be produced in the $$^{10}$$B(p,$$alpha$$)$$^{7}$$Be reaction was used to quantify the $$^{10}$$B, and $$gamma$$ rays of $$^{56}$$Co originating from the reaction with Fe in blood was used to normalize the $$gamma$$-ray intensity. The results demonstrated that the present CPAA method can be applied to the determination of the $$^{10}$$B concentration in the blood sample.

Gamma-gamma coincidence measurement utilized in $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy experiments is well known to be effective for the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio in a $$gamma$$-ray spectrum. We study its applicability to determination of long-lived radioactive nuclides in environmental samples. The $$gamma$$-ray simulation code Geant 4.10.2 was used. We took up 35 nuclides which need to be determined for the evaluation of fission product leakage at the nuclear accident in the Fukushima nuclear power plants. Among them five nuclides of $$^{60}$$Co, $$^{94}$$Nb, $$^{134}$$Cs, $$^{152}$$Eu and $$^{154}$$Eu can be the objectives of the multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection method. The simulation results indicate that the signal-to-noise ratio can be improved by a factor between 9.8 and 283, and the detection limit by a factor between 2.7 and 8.5 relative to the singles measurement, implying that the method can be well applied to the determination of the long-lived radioactive nuclides.

Sensitivity of charged particle activation analysis with 8 MeV proton beam was studied for determination of 35 long-lived radioactive nuclides. Reaction cross sections for those nuclides were estimated with ALICE-91 code and isomer yield ratios were estimated from those of neighboring isotopes by taking into account their spins and parities. It was found that the proposed charged particle activation analysis should show high sensitivity for the determination of several hardly measurable nuclides with long half-lives such as $$^{135}$$Cs, $$^{244}$$Pu, $$^{129}$$I, $$^{126}$$Sn, $$^{93}$$Mo, $$^{107}$$Pd, $$^{236}$$U, $$^{248}$$Cm, and $$^{237}$$Np.

We have started the measurements of the neutron-capture cross sections for stable $$^{105,108}$$Pd nuclei as well as the radioactive $$^{107}$$Pd. The neutron-capture cross-section measurements by the time-of flight method were performed using an apparatus called "Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI)" installed at the neutron Beam Line No.4 of the Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in the J-PARC. The neutron-capture cross sections of $$^{107}$$Pd and $$^{105,108}$$Pd have been measured in the neutron energy range from thermal to 300 eV. Some new information was obtained for resonances of these Pd nuclei.

In this work, we measured the capture $$gamma$$ rays from the neutron resonances of $$^{74}$$Se and $$^{77}$$Se. A neutron time-of-flight method was adopted for the measurements with a 4$$pi$$ Ge spectrometer installed at the Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) in the J-PARC Material and Life science experimental Facility (MLF). The $$gamma$$-ray pulse-height spectra corresponding to the 27-eV resonance of $$^{74}$$Se and the 113-, 212-, 291-, 342-, 690- and 864-eV resonances of $$^{77}$$Se were obtained by gating on the TOF regions, respectively. The relative intensities of those primary transitions were derived and compared with the previous experimental data. For the 27-eV resonance of $$^{74}$$Se, a strong primary transition to the 293-keV state was observed. As for $$^{77}$$Se, the quite differences of the decay pattern were found between the resonances.

To measure $$beta$$-decay energy $$Q_{beta}$$ of short-lived fission products with good accuracy and high efficiency, we have developed a new total absorption clover detector and demonstrated its performance. Using a large-volume clover-type Ge detector having a through-hole in its center, we could measure total absorption spectra of $$beta$$ + $$gamma$$ rays with extremely high efficiency and high energy resolution, and could determine $$Q_{beta}$$ values with $$pm$$30 keV accuracy. Using this detector, we have determined the $$Q_{beta}$$ values of $$^{166}$$Eu and $$^{165}$$Gd for the first time, and of $$^{160-165}$$Eu and $$^{163}$$Gd with better accuracies. In addition, we have observed a new isomeric state in $$^{163}$$Gd, and determined its half-life and excitation energy.

High-spin states of $$^{190}$$Pt have been reinvestigated using the $$^{176}$$Yb($$^{18}$$O, 4$$n$$) reaction at a beam energy of 88 MeV. The previously known positive parity band associated with the $$nu$$ $$i^{-2}_{13/2}$$ $$nu$$ $$h^{-1}_{9/2}$$ $$nu$$ $$j^{-1}$$ ($$nu j$$ being $$nu p_{3/2}$$ or $$nu f_{5/2}$$) configuration has been revised and extended significantly. A new negative parity band has been established and proposed to be based on the $$nu$$ $$i^{-3}_{13/2}$$ $$nu$$ $$j^{-1}$$ configuration. Possible structure evolution of the yrast line from predominantly vibrational to rotational with increasing spin is discussed with the help of E$$_gamma$$ over spin curves. Additionally, calculations of Total Routhian surfaces have been performed to investigate the band properties.

The cross section of the $$^{237}$$Np$$(n,gamma)$$ reaction has been measured in the energy range from 10 meV to $$1$$ keV using the ANNRI-NaI detector at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The cross section was obtained relative to that of the $$^{10}$$B$$(n,alpha)$$ reaction. The absolute value of the cross section was deduced by normalizing the relative cross section to the JENDL-4.0 evaluation at the first resonance. The thermal cross section was obtained to be (176.7$$pm$$4.7)b. The Maxwellian-averaged cross section for $$kT$$ = 25.3 meV was derived as (174.6$$pm$$5.1)b by referring the cross section from JENDL-4.0 below 10 meV. These results lead to the Westcott's $$g$$-factor of 0.988$$pm$$0.010.

High spin states of $$^{101}$$Pd have been studied through in-beam $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy by using the reaction $$^{68}$$Zn ($$^{37}$$Cl, 1$$p$$3$$n$$). The band based on the $$h$$$$_{11/2}$$ neutron orbital has been extended to higher-spin states, and the band based on the $$d$$$$_{5/2}$$ neutron orbital has been somewhat revised. Many transitions decaying to these bands have been observed and consequently, several side bands have been established. Electric dipole transitions from the $$h$$$$_{11/2}$$ band to the $$d$$$$_{5/2}$$ band have been also observed. The structure of the $$h$$$$_{11/2}$$ band was discussed from the viewpoint of "antimagnetic rotation" based on a semiclassical particle plus rotor model taking neutron alignments into account.
