In research reactors, CCD cameras are used to observe reactor core for reactor operation management, e.g. to prevent debris from falling. In order to measure the reactor power and fuel burnup exactly by means of observation of Cherenkov light, the development of the on-line measurement device started in 2009. In this study, the wavelength and the absolute irradiance of the Cherenkov light were measured by a spectrometer, and the Cherenkov light was observed by the CCD camera. As a result, the measurement value is good agreement with the nominal value. On the other hand, the value by the visible imaging system was obtained the same tendency of nominal transmittance value of ND-filters.

In this study, as a part of development of in-reactor surveillance, wavelength and absolute irradiance of Cherenkov light were measured by spectroscopy, and Cherenkov light was observed by the CCD camera. The neutral density filters (ND-filters) were used to investigate the transmittance of Cherenkov light in these measurements.

A project to expand at TIARA (Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application) facilities of JAERI has been proposed to broaden applications in biotechnology and materials science. Heavy ions with energy more than 100 MeV/n are required for remarkable progress in breeding of plant and development of new materials. The magnet of a superconducting AVF cyclotron with a K number of 900 has been designed to cope with acceleration of both 150 MeV/n heavy ions and 300 MeV protons. The lower limit of energies has been investigated to overlap the energy region covered by the JAERI AVF cyclotron, required to increase beam time for present users. We have designed a beam transport system to satisfy requirements of the applications.

A superconducting AVF cyclotron with a bending limit of 900 MeV and a focusing limit of 300 MeV is being designed to meet the requirements for the research in materials science and biotechnology at TIARA facility of JAERI. The spiral-sector shape of the cyclotron magnet has been optimized for acceleration of a 300 MeV proton to produce sufficient focusing forces in an extraction region. An energy range of the superconducting AVF cyclotron overlaps with that of the present K110 JAERI AVF cyclotron. Characteristics of a resonator for the superconducting AVF cyclotron have been investigated using the MAFIA code. An acceleration voltage in a frequency range of 24 to 64 MHz can be produced by the resonator with a $$lambda$$/2 excitation mode.

A high power neutral beam injector (NBI) has been designed for ITER. A key component of the NBI system is a high power beam source which produces a 40A D$$^{-}$$ ion beams at the energy of 1 MeV. JAERI has developed a vacuum insulated beam source (VIBS). The VIBS insulates the high voltage of 1 MV by immersing the ion source and accelerator in vacuum. So far the VIBS succeeded in acceleration of 37 mA (power supply drain current) beam up to 970 keV for 1 s. The achieved beam energy is nearly equal to the required value for the ITER NBI system. The negative ion source for the ITER beam source has been also developed. One of the key issues for the negative ion source is reduction of the operating pressure. By optimizing the filter magnetic field for negative ion production even at low pressure, a H$$^{-}$$ ion beam of 31 mA/cm$$^{2}$$ was extracted at 0.1 Pa. Although the pulse length was very short (0.1 s) the ITER requirement on the current density was demonstrated at 1/3 of the ITER design pressure (0.3 Pa), which could reduce the heat loading on the accelerator grids.
