The 4f and 5d XPS spectra reveal the presence of the cluster 0.7-2.5nm in diameter, depending on the Au concentration. The elationship between XPS 4f-binding energy shift and 5d splitting is determined for the Au clusters embedded in the carbon and found to be significantly different from the previous data for the ones supported on a carbon substrate. We suppose that this difference results from the effect of the environment around a cluster on Coulomb charging during photoemission at the final state.

UPdAl is an HF uranium compound which has transitions into an antiferromagnetic phase at K and into a superconducting phase at =2 K. To describe the various properties of this compound, the dual model for U 5 states is proposed. In this model, two of the three U 5f states are in a localized state while the third electron has delocalized character. We have obtained U 5f sensitive band structure of UPdAl by SX-ARPES, and the results are compared with this scenario. Temperature dependence of the U 5 electronic structure in this compound is also discussed.

We have carried out the high-resolution photoemission experiments on some uranium compounds using soft X-ray synchrotron radiation from SPring-8 to understand their electronic structures. Bulk- and U 5-sensitive band structure and Fermi surface were obtained for itinerant U 5 compounds UFeGa and USb, and they are compared with the results of the band structure calculations treating U 5 states as being itinerant. In addition, we show the results of photoemission study on some heavy fermion compounds such as UPdAl and UNiAl. The temperature dependences of the U 5 electronic structure of UPdAl will be also reported.

For Cu/Au-deposited AlO samples, two components, higher and lower-energy ones, were resolved on both Cu and Au peaks in the RBS random spectrum. For single-crystalline AlO samples, a double-peak structure was clearly observed on both Al and O surface peaks in the RBS aligned spectrum. The charge-state distribution can be obtained from the intensity of each component. The results obtained here are compared with previous data for the equilibrium charge-state distribution.

Although the agreement between the experimental band strucure and the LDA calculation treating U 5 electrons as beeing itinerant is qualitative, the morphology of the Fermi surface is well explained by the calculation. This result claims that the importance of the electron correlation effect even for the itinerant U 5 compound.

It is found that the asymmetry of the XPS C 1s line increases as the irradiation dose increases. The origin of the asymmetry appeared on the C 1s line is discussed. It is concluded that the asymmetry of the C 1s line is not correlated with the increase in the size of a graphitic layer, but is related with the structural disorders, such as a bond angle disorder.
