In response to the new regulatory standards established in response to the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in March 2011, measures and impact assessments related to internal flooding at HTTR were carried out. In assessing the impact, considering the characteristics of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, flooding due to assumed damage to piping and equipment, flooding due to water discharge from the system installed to prevent the spread of fire, and flooding due to damage to piping and equipment due to an earthquake. The effects of submersion, flooding, and flooding due to steam were evaluated for each of them. The impact of the overflow of liquids containing radioactive materials outside the radiation-controlled area was also evaluated. As a result, it was confirmed that flooding generated at HTTR does not affect the safety function of the reactor facility by taking measures.

Decay heat is one of an important factor for a safety evaluation of depressurized loss-of-forced cooling accident, a representative high consequence accident, in high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). Traditionally, a conservative decay heat curve is used for safety analysis according to the regulatory standards. On the other hand, there is growing interest in obtaining test data related to decay heat for the use of uncertainty analysis. However, such data has not been obtained for prismatic-type HTGR. Therefore, we have launched a test program to obtain the decay heat data from the HTTR. As an initial step, an applicability confirmation test of decay heat evaluation method for HTGR was conducted in February 2017 without non-nuclear heating condition. This report introduces an estimation method for the decay heat based on test data using HTTR and shows the results of validation of the reactor residual heat evaluation method which will be used to obtain the decay heat data based on test data.

In order to reduce the influence on a plant schedule of the MONJU by the maintenance of dew point hygrometers, The JAEA examined a capacitance type dew point hygrometer as an alternative dew point hygrometer for a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer which had been used at the CV-LRT in the MONJU. As a result of comparing a capacitance type dew point hygrometer with a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer at the CV-LRT (Atmosphere: nitrogen, Testing time: 24 hours), there weren't significant difference between a capacitance type dew point hygrometer and a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer. As a result of comparing a capacitance dew point hygrometer with a high-mirror-surface type dew point hygrometer for long term verification (Atmosphere: air, Testing time: 24 months), the JAEA confirmed that a capacitance type dew point hygrometer satisfied the instrument specification ($$pm$$2.04$$^{circ}$$C) required by the JEAC4203-2008.

The loss of the retaining split pins (four pieces) for clevis pin were confirmed at the inspection of the pipe supports in the Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor in May, 2014. The split pins (two pieces) of ROD RESTRAINT and CONSTANT HANGER were fallen off. The split pins (two pieces) of MECHANICAL SNUBBER were broken at both ends of them. As a result of investigation, a dimple pattern was observed in a fracture surface of broken split pin. This observation result showed that fracture morphology is ductile fracture. A reproduction test, whether split pin was broken by loading the external force to the clevis pin, also gave the same fracture morphology. As the result of all cause investigation, the reason of the broken split pins is that the split pins were loaded shearing stress by the external force loaded to the clevis pin axial direction. The result of the cause investigation and a recurrence prevention measure of this trouble was be reported by this report.

The emergency power feeders of the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) have gas turbine generators which are composed of gas turbin engines, generators and current breakers. The gas turbine generators have been overhauled and maintained to keep the performance. The maintenance technology was upgraded by improving their parts and surveillance method on the basis of the operational and maintenance experience. It can be clarified that the deterioration levels and the sudden deterioration timing are judged at an early stage by measuring the max exhaust temperature at the time of start in addition to check the starting time of the Gas Turbine Engines.

The first driver fuel of the HTTR (High Temperature Engineering test Reactor) was loaded in 1998 and the HTTR reached first criticality state in the same year. The HTTR has been operated using the first driver fuel for a decade. In Fuel elements assembling, 4770 of fuel rods which consist of 12 kinds of enrichment uranium are loaded into 150 fuel graphite blocks for HTTR second driver fuel elements. Measures of prevention of fuel rod miss loading, are employed in fuel design. Additionally, precaution of fuel handling on assembling are considered. Reception of fuel rods, assembling of fuel elements and storage of second driver fuels in the fresh fuel storage rack in the HTTR were started since June, 2008. Assembling, storage and pre-service inspection were divided into three parts. The second driver fuel assembling was completed in September, 2008. This report describes concerns of fuel handling on assembling and storage work for the HTTR fuel elements.

During normal operation of High Temperature engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the reactivity is controlled by the Control Rods (CRs) system which consists of 32 CRs (16 pairs) and 16 Control Rod Drive Mechanisms (CRDMs). The CR system is located in stand-pipes accompanied by the Reserved Shutdown System (RSS). In the unlikely event that the CRs fail to be inserted, the RSS is provided to insert B$$_{4}$$C/C pellets into the core. The RSS shall be designed so that the reactor should be held subcriticality from any operation condition by dropping in the pellets. The RSS consists of B$$_{4}$$C/C pellets, hoppers which contain the pellets, electric plug, driving mechanisms, guide tubes and so on. In accidents when the CRs cannot be inserted, an electric plug is pulled out by a motor and the absorber pellets fall into the core by gravity. A trouble, malfunction of one RSS out of sixteen, occurred during a series of the pre-start up checks of HTTR on February 21, 2005. We investigated the cause of the RSS trouble and took countermeasures to prevent the issue. As the result of investigation, the cause of the trouble was attributed to the following reason: In the motor inside, The Oil of grease of the multiplying gear flowed down from a gap of the oil seal which has been deformed and was mixed with abrasion powder of brake disk. Therefore the adhesive mixture prevented a motor from rotating.

To provide a basis for determination of the actual core power distribution, The power distribution experiments by measuring gross gamma ray emitted from fission products in the fuel assemblies were performed. The fuel assemblies were not spent condition but in-service condition. The averaged burn up was about 4,400 MWD/t. The gamma ray of a fuel assembly was measured with a GM counter under a temporary fuel withdrawing situation from the core during shutdown state. Uncertainties of the determination were from 3 to 6 percent in axial distribution per one fuel compact and within about 4 percent in radial and axial distribution of the core per one fuel assembly. It was concluded that the power distribution of the HTTR is almost equivalent to the expected power-profile shaping. Calculation of gamma ray distribution was performed by ORIGEN-2 code based the power distribution obtained by the Monte Carlo MVP code. The calculation results show good agreement with the experimental ones. The method, procedure, analysis, correction, determination and comparison are described in this report.

The lithium chloride-type dew point detector was used for reactor containment vessel the entire leak rate test (CV-LRT) in fast-breeder reactor Monju (Monju) which needs the maintenance every three months. But when the plant process is considered, it's desirable for the maintenance periods beyond 12 months. Thereupon the capacitance-type dew point detector made in VAISALA Corporation was nominated as the alternative lithium chloride-type dew point detector in Monju. The lithium chloride-type dew point detector, when it's adopted, for, to have to be satisfied a request of the regulations, it's necessary to estimate the performance of the lithium chloride-type dew point detector. In the condition of the CV-LRT, the dew point data were measured by the capacitance-type dew point detector and the lithium chloride-type dew point detector for 24 hours. These data were compared and the performance of the capacitance-type dew point detector was estimated. Furthermore, the dew point data of Monju under the atmosphere ware continuously measured by the capacitance-type dew point detector and the mirror surface-type dew point detector for 2 years. These data were compared and the performance of the capacitance-type dew point detector was estimated. As a result, the capacitance-type dew point detector was confirmed that had the instrument precision that JEAC4203-2008 required.

In order to reduce the influence on a plant schedule of Monju by the maintenance of dew point hygrometers, JAEA Agency examined a capacitance type dew point hygrometer as an alternative dew point hygrometer for a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer which had been used at the containment vessel leak rate test in Monju. As a result of comparing a capacitance type dew point hygrometer with a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer at the CV-LRT (Atmosphere: nitrogen, testing time/24 hours), there was no significant difference between a capacitance type dew point hygrometer and a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer. As a result of comparing a capacitance dew point hygrometer with a high-precision-mirror-surface type dew point hygrometer for long term verification (Atmosphere: air, testing time: 24 months), it was confirmed that a capacitance type dew point hygrometer satisfied the instrument specification required by the CV-LRT. There are no other cases where atmosphere measurement has been carried out for a long time by existing measuring instruments.

no journal, ,

To establish an exchange frequency of a rupture disk (hereinafter called "RD") installed in a evaporator and a superheater (hereinafter called "ED", "SH") of the prototype fast-breeder reactor MONJU (hereinafter called "MONJU"), the purpose of this study is to estimate the aging degradation of used RD in MONJU and material test and bursting test of used RD were carried out. When massive Na-H$$_{2}$$O reaction occurred in the ED, SH, RD is the equipment which was installed for the purpose of the case that the pressure in the secondary heat transportation system is opened and opening of the pressure is detected. From the result of the examination, material characteristics were not a significant degradation. On the other hand, the bursting pressure was slightly changed. However the change was in the reach of the request value of the secondary heat transportation system. To establish the exchange frequency of the high precision for the RD, expansion of further data is needed.
