Various isotopes of Ac, Ra, Fr, and Rn were produced by fusion-evaporation reactions using a $$^{48}$$Ca beam. The energetic ions were stopped in and extracted from a helium gas cell. The extracted ions were identified using a multi-reflection time-of-fight mass spectrograph. In all cases, it was observed that the predominant charge state for the extracted ions, including the alkali Fr, was 2+.

Using a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph located after a gas cell coupled with the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II, the masses of several $$alpha$$-decaying heavy nuclei were directly and precisely measured. The nuclei were produced via fusion-evaporation reactions and separated from projectilelike and targetlike particles using GARIS-II before being stopped in a helium-filled gas cell. Time-of-flight spectra for three isobar chains, $$^{204}$$Fr-$$^{204}$$Rn-$$^{204}$$At-$$^{204}$$Po, $$^{205}$$Fr- $$^{205}$$Rn-$$^{205}$$At-$$^{205}$$Po-$$^{205}$$Bi, and $$^{206}$$Fr-$$^{206}$$Rn-$$^{206}$$At, were observed. Precision atomic mass values were determined for $$^{204-206}$$Fr, $$^{204,205}$$Rn, and $$^{204,205}$$At. Identifications of $$^{205}$$Bi, $$^{204,205}$$Po, $$^{206}$$Rn, and $$^{206}$$At were made with N$$leq$$10 detected ions, representing the next step toward use of mass spectrometry to identify exceedingly low-yield species such as superheavy element ions.

Recently, a heavy-ion program as a future J-PARC project has been discussed. The main goals of the program are to explore the QCD phase diagram at highbaryon density with heavy ions up to uranium at the beam energies of around 10A GeV. We are planning to focus on the electron and muon measurements and rare probe search such asmulti-strangeness and charmed hadrons with high beam rates at J-PARC. A heavy-ionacceleration scheme has been considered with a new heavy-ion linac and a new booster ring, with the existing 3-GeV Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron, and the 30-GeV Main Ring synchrotron. An overview of the heavy-ion program and accelerator design, as well as physics goals and conceptual design of the experiments are presented.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

Electrolytic Extraction of platinum group metals from Purex process solutions.(2)

PNC TN8410 93-006, 38 Pages, 1992/12

Elimination of the ionic platinum group metals (palladium, rhodium, ruthenium) and technetium from dissolver solution seems to be an effective method to improve the stability, reliability and operability of the extraction process in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Some fundamental experiments were conducted for the purpose of establishing this new method. A method of electrolytic extraction to separate and recover such metals from Purex process solutions was investigated. Potentiostatic investigations of platinum group metals were carried out to identify deposition starting potential and rate in a nitric acid condition. As the results, it was found that the deposition rate depended on the electrode material, temperature, nitric acid concentration and coexistence ions. The deposition rate were found to be related to the polalization potential, and the optimum deposition potential was specified for each of platinum group metals.

Electrolytic extraction of platinum group metal from Purex process solutions (1)

Platinum group metals (palladium, rhodium, ruthenium) and technetium are key nuclides which dominate the overall decontamination factors of the Purex Process. They are also precious metals which can be potential resources in the future. Electrolytic deposition (or extraction) is likely to separate and recover such metals from Purex process solutions. Potentiostatic investigation for platinum group metals were carried out to identify the deposition starting potential and deposition velocity in nitric acid condition. As the results, it was found that there was an optimum deposition potential specific to each platinum elements. Palladium tended to deposit on the cathode electrode surface from modified HLLW with high efficiency even in the high acid concentration.
