A prototype cavity for the annular-ring coupled structure (ACS) for use in the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) linac has been developed to confirm the feasibility of achieving the required performance. This prototype cavity is a buncher module, which includes ten accelerating cells in total. The ACS cavity is formed by the silver brazing of ACS half-cell pieces stacked in a vacuum furnace. The accelerating cell of the ACS is surrounded by a coupling cell. We, therefore, tuned the frequencies of the accelerating and coupling cells by an ultraprecision lathe before brazing, taking into account the frequency shift due to brazing. The prototype buncher module was successfully conditioned up to 600 kW, which corresponds to an accelerating field that is higher than the designed field of 4.1 MV/m by 30%. We describe the frequency-tuning results for the prototype buncher module and its high-power conditioning.

Proceedings of 8th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), 3 Pages, 2011/08

An annular-ring coupled structure (ACS) for J-PARC linac has been in mass-production since March 2009. It was planned to fabricate 18 ACS accelerating modules and two debuncher modules for the three years. At present, they are progressing on schedule. The past achievements include: ten accelerating modules were completed on schedule; the frequency tuning of the most accelerating modules was finished except two debencher modules; and 14 accelerating modules have been brazed. One of the mass-produced modules was conditioned up to 1.6 MW, which corresponds to the accelerating field by 15% higher than the designed value of 4.2 MV/m.

Proceedings of 7th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (DVD-ROM), p.552 - 554, 2010/08

The energy upgrade of the J-PARC linac was started from March 2009. In this project 20 Annular Coupled Structure (ACS) modules will be fabricated. The resonant frequency of the ACS module has to be tuned with mechanical machining before the final brazing. Therefore the test cells were fabricated to accumulate frequency tuning parameters. We fixed the final dimensions and the machining amount of the frequency tuning using these results. So far, the cell parts for the five ACS modules were tuned within 71.93 $$pm$$ 0.05 MHz. At the moment the first ACS module is being assembled and it will be completed in autumn 2010.

Ao, Hiroyuki; Asano, Hiroyuki; Ouchi, Nobuo; Tsubota, Naoaki; Hasegawa, Kazuo; Hirano, Koichiro; Morishita, Takatoshi; Takata, Koji*; Naito, Fujio*; Yamazaki, Yoshishige

Proceedings of 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC '10) (Internet), p.618 - 620, 2010/05

The mass production of the ACS (Annular-ring Coupled Structure) cavity started from March 2009 for the J-PARC linac energy upgrade from 181 MeV to 400 MeV. This upgrade project requires 18 ACS accelerating modules and two debunchers additionally within three years. The schedule is so tight that we have to optimize the fabrication process. Thus the test cells were fabricated for the all geometrical beta before the mass production to confirm the initial design and the frequency tuning procedure. This paper describes our approach for the mass production and the current status.

The four shift bump magnets (BUHS01-04) of the 3-GeV RCS in J-PARC, which are located at the long straight section, produce a fixed main bump orbit to merge the injection beam into the circulating beam. They are realized with four magnets connected in series to form the accurate closed bump orbit. However, the total integrated magnetic field of the four magnets is not zero because of the magnetic field interferences between the shift bump magnet and the adjacent quadrupole magnet (Q magnet). In order to decrease the imbalance of the integrated magnetic field, 0.3mm insulators were inserted at the median plane of the return yoke of the second and third shift bump magnets (BUHS02 and BUHS03). The integrated field has been decreased from 2358.0 Gauss-cm to -71.6 Gauss-cm, resulting in the closed orbit distortion of the beam to be decreases from 6.0 mm to less than 1.0 mm.

The beam painting injection system of the 3-GeV RCS in J-PARC, which realizes the uniform beam distributions in the ring, consists of four horizontal paint bump magnets and two vertical paint magnets. Each paint bump magnet power supply is required to excite the current with high accuracy that varies from 17.6 kA to zero during 0.5 msec. The IGBT chopper units, the switching frequency of which is 50 kHz each, are multiple connected to achieve the effective carrier frequency of 600 kHz. The output accuracy is then achieved to be less than 1 %. The measurements of the magnetic field with the actual current waveform were performed and the good performance was confirmed.

Ao, Hiroyuki; Hirano, Koichiro; Morishita, Takatoshi; Asano, Hiroyuki; Naito, Fujio*; Ueno, Akira; Ikegami, Masanori*; Hasegawa, Kazuo; Yamazaki, Yoshishige; Paramonov, V.*

Proceedings of 5th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan and 33rd Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan (CD-ROM), p.494 - 496, 2008/00

The J-PARC ACS cavity consists of many cell parts. For the mass production, the ACS requires about 1300 cell parts, so that it is important to reduce the machining time. In the previous ACS model, it took about three hours per one coupling slot. We, therefore, optimized the slot design, the tolerance, and the machining process. As a result, the machining time reduced to forty-five minutes per one slot. The four test cells were fabricated to measure the frequencies and Q-values, and these results were compared with the electromagnetic analysis with the Microwave Studio. Between the analysis and the measurement, the differences are 1$$sim$$1.5 MHz and 4$$sim$$5 MHz, respectively, for the accelerating mode, and for the coupling mode.

Proceedings of 5th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan and 33rd Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan (CD-ROM), p.497 - 499, 2008/00

An ACS (Annular Coupled Structure) module has been developing for the 190-MeV to 400-MeV part of the J-PARC Linac. We have conducted the high power test of the first ACS module which consists of two accelerating tanks with 17 cells and a bridge tank with 9 cells. This paper describes results of the high power RF tests. The module achieved an average axial accelerating gradient of E0 = 4.5 MV/m at 1.8 MW RF input power, 0.6 ms pulse width, and 50 Hz repetition rate.

Proceedings of 23rd International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2006) (CD-ROM), p.740 - 742, 2007/00

For the J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) linac, an SDTL (Separated type Drift Tube Linac) is used to accelerate an H$$^{-}$$ ion beam from 50 MeV to 191 MeV. We have measured the RF characteristics of the SDTL tanks and adjusted the field distribution. The measured Q value was above 90% of an ideal SUPERFISH value. Furthermore the field distribution was adjusted within $$pm$$1% for all the tanks.

Proceedings of 23rd International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2006) (CD-ROM), p.782 - 784, 2007/00

Three DTL tanks and 32 SDTL tanks for the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) were assembled at KEK site. After the assembling, the high-power conditioning of the DTL1 and 12 SDTL tanks and the beam acceleration test for the DTL1 ware carried out. And then all the DTL and SDTL tanks have to be transported form KEK to JAEA. In order to confirm the effect of the transportation to the drift tube alignment, we measured the displacement of the drift tube positions before and after the transportation by using a prototype cavity. As a result of the test, the measured displacement of the drift tubes by the transportation was less than 0.02mm which is consistent in the measurement accuracy. Based on this result, all the DTL and SDTL tanks were transported form KEK to JAEA.

Takayanagi, Tomohiro; Ueno, Tomoaki; Irie, Yoshiro; Kinsho, Michikazu; Takeda, Osamu; Yamazaki, Yoshishige; Yoshimoto, Masahiro; Kamiya, Junichiro; Watanabe, Masao; Kuramochi, Masaya

Proceedings of 10th European Particle Accelerator Conference (EPAC 2006) (CD-ROM), p.1762 - 1764, 2006/00

The shift bump magnet produces a fixed main bump orbit to merge the injection beam into the circulating beam. In order to control the injection beam for the short injection time (500 microseconds) with sufficient accuracy, the shift bump magnet needs a wide uniform magnetic field and the high speed exciting pattern of the high current. The magnetic field design and the structural analysis of the shift bump magnet have been performed using the three-dimensional electromagnetic analysis code and the mechanical analysis code, respectively. The magnetic field distributions were measured with a long search coil, thus giving a BL product over the magnet gap area. The temperature distributions at the various points of the magnet were measured by the thermocouples over 24 hours till they saturated. General trend of these measurements agrees well with calculations.
