Sophistication $$^{14}$$C measurement at JAEA-AMS-MUTSU; Attempt on a small quantity of sample

Tanaka, Takayuki; Kabuto, Shoji; Kinoshita, Naoki; Yamamoto, Nobuo

JAEA-Conf 2010-001, p.122 - 125, 2010/03

In the investigations on substance dynamics using the molecular weight and chemical fractionation, the utilization of $$^{14}$$C measurement by an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) have started. As a result of the fractionation, sample contents required for AMS measurement have been downsized. We expect that this trend toward a small quantity of sample will be steadily accelerated in the future. As $$^{14}$$C measurement by AMS established at Mutsu office require about 2 mg of sample content at present, our AMS lags behind the others in the trend. We try to downsize the needed sample content for $$^{14}$$C measurement by our AMS. In this study, we modified the shape of the target-piece in which the sample is packed and which is regularly needed to radiocarbon measurement by our AMS. Moreover, we improved on the apparatus needed to pack the sample. As a result of the improvement, we revealed that it is possible to measure the $$^{14}$$C using our AMS even by the amount of the sample of about 0.5 mg.

Yamamoto, Nobuo; Kinoshita, Naoki; Kabuto, Shoji; Tanaka, Takayuki

JAEA-Conf 2010-001, p.88 - 91, 2010/03

Tandetron Accelerator Mass Spectrometer in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency Mutsu office (JAEA AMS Mutsu: High Voltage Engineering Europa product, Model 4130-AMS) consists of 3MV tandem type accelerator and the 2 beam lines for measurement of isotope ratio for carbon and iodine. Steady operation of carbon beam line was started in December, 1999 and that of iodine beam line was started in May, 2003. This facility was initially used for studies on transport processes of radionuclides in marine environment. From the fiscal year 2006, this facility became a shared facility to provide data for various projects at JAEA and others. This report describes the status of recent utilization of JAEA AMS MUTSU and the revision of the charge from fiscal year 2010.

JAEA-Conf 2010-001, p.126 - 129, 2010/03

A Tandetron Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) manufactured by High Voltage Engineering Europa in Netherlands had been set up at the Mutsu office of Aomori Research and Development Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) in 1997. This AMS features 3MV Tandetron accelerator and two independence beamlines for $$^{14}$$C and $$^{129}$$I measurement. This AMS has measured both internal and external JAEA researcher's samples based on an open door policy since April 2006. Furthermore, the total operation time of this AMS from the routine operation started exceeds more than 20,000 hours in this year. In this report, we describe not only the summary of the current status and troubles from the previous symposium but also the upgrading of the operation system in this AMS which is carried out from June to July in 2009.

Tanaka, Takayuki; Kabuto, Shoji; Kinoshita, Naoki; Yamamoto, Nobuo

KURRI-KR-153, p.29 - 34, 2010/03

An accelerator mass spectrometry at Mutsu office, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA AMS MUTSU) was established in 1997 and the routine operation of radiocarbon measurement was started from 1999. The radiocarbon was measured by 1,193 samples last year, and the number of radiocarbon measurements reached 8,809 samples since the routine operation. This AMS has adopted the open door policy for the general users from the fiscal year of 2006 and various researches have been in progress by many users. As a operate system of this AMS had been controlled under Windows 3.1 since installation, it was difficult to purchase spare parts which are compatible with Windows 3.1. The operation system was upgraded to Windows XP in this year. In this presentation, I introduce the current status of JAEA AMS MUTSU, upgrading of the operation system and moreover an extraction method for determination of dissolved organic radiocarbon which was developed in this year.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

Sodium boiling detection by acoustic method

PNC-TN941-84-59.pdf:1.62MB

Sodium boiling experiments were conducted with the out-of-core sodium loop in order to establish the acoustic detection method of sodium boiling in FBR reactor core. The following results, which are informative to the design of the sodium boiling boiling acoustic detection system were obtained concerned about the characteristic of sodium boiling sound, the method of signal processing and the change of acoustic sensor performance. (1)Acoustic pressure by sodium boiling increases according to the boiling grade, but boiling period becomes longer conversely. The maximum acoustic pressure reached about 1000 Pascal, and the period decreased until about 0.7 second. (2)Acoustic spectrum extends from a few kHz to a few tens kHz, but by in-sodium sensor, lower frequency components and by on-wraper tube sensor, higher frequency components were obtained mainly. And the latter sensor had peculiar acoustic signals which didn't appear in the former sensor. (3)Smooting processing of acoustic signals was found to be necessary for the cross correlation method in order to obtain the time lag between the signals of two sensors. (4)Detecting sensitivity of piezo electric acoustic sensors (LiNbO$$_{3}$$) decreased about 20 dB and recovered to 5 dB after used in sodium for long time. But the resistance between electrodes of sensors continued to decrease with the operation time in sodium due to lack of oxygen. (5)On the detection of early stage sodium boiling, some methods which utilizes the boiling periodicity and cross-correlation between two sensors would be necessary in order to distinguish that was caused by boiling from the flow noise. Some studies are still necessary in future for the establishment of the detection method of early stage boiling under the real level of flow noise, and the localization method of boiling sourse. Besides these efforts, the development of magnetic distortion probe which doesn't need oxygen is also expected.
