Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and by law of Ibaraki Prefecture), the effluent control of liquid waste discharged from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been performed. This report describes the effluent control results of the liquid waste in the fiscal year 2022. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other nuclear fuel material usage facilities were much lower than the limits authorized by the above regulations.

The hydrogen absorption and diffusion mechanisms on cube-shaped Pd nanoparticles (NPs) which are important hydrogen-storage materials were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT calculations. In the surface region, hydrogen absorption showed almost similar behavior regardless of the NPs size. It was found that the octahedral sites are more favorable than the tetrahedral sites for hydrogen occupation. We also clarified that the hydrogen atoms absorbing on the smaller-sized Pd NPs diffuse to the subsurface more actively because of the weakened Pd-H bond by the surface disordering, which plays an important role in hydrogen adsorption at a low H$$_{2}$$ pressure.

0xidation processes at the interface and the surface of Si(111) substrate with thin Hf films were studied using photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with supersonic oxygen molecular beams (SOMB). The oxidation starts at the outermost Hf layers and produces stoichiometric HfO$$_{2}$$. Hf silicates (Hf-O-Si configuration) were generated in the vicinity of the HfO$$_{2}$$/Si interface in the case of the irradiation of 2.2 eV SOMB. The oxidation of the Si substrate takes place to generate SiO$$_{2}$$ compounds. Si atoms were emitted from the SiO$$_{2}$$/Si interface region underneath the HfO$$_{2}$$ overlayers to release the stress generated within the strained Si layers. The emitted Si atoms can pass through the HfO$$_{2}$$ overlayers and react with the impinging O$$_{2}$$ gas.

Ultrathin hafnium films on Si(111)-7$$times$$7 were studied using synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopies to reveal the chemical states at interface and surface. Ultrathin Hf layers grow on clean Si(111)-7$$times$$7 surface by lever rule. Surface and interface of Hf/Si(111) contain three components (metallic Hf layers, Hf monosilicide (HfSi) and Si-rich Hf silicide). Ultrathin Hf layers changes HfSi$$_{2}$$ islands on bared Si(111)-7$$times$$7 surface after annealing at 1073 K. It was found that the long axes of the rectangle islands expand the direction connecting the corner holes in DAS model of clean Si(111)-7$$times$$7 surface.

Analysis of ion-irradiation induced lattice expansion and ferromagnetic state in CeO$$_{2}$$ by using Poisson distribution function

The lattice constant and the magnetic state of CeO$$_{2}$$ are modified by the irradiation with 200 MeV Xe ions. Under the assumption that these modifications are induced in the narrow one-dimensional region (the ion track) along the ion beam path, the dependence of the lattice constant and the saturation magnetization of CeO$$_{2}$$ on the Xe ion fluence can be analyzed by using the Poisson distribution function. The analysis reveals that the lattice constant inside the ion track, which is larger than outside the ion track is not affected by the overlapping of the ion track. The present result implies that the Poisson distribution function is useful for describing the effect of ion track overlapping on the ion irradiation induced ferromagnetic state in CeO$$_{2}$$.

We report the elongation of embedded Au nanoparticles (NPs) in three different matrices under irradiations of 4 MeV C$$_{60}$$ ions and 200 MeV Xe ions. Large elongation of Au NPs was observed for crystalline indium tin oxide (ITO) under both 4 MeV C$$_{60}$$ and 200 MeV Xe irradiation. The ITO layer preserved the crystallinity even after large elongation was induced. This is the first report of the elongation of metal NPs in a crystalline matrix.

Most probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) of structures involve the use of probabilistic schemes such as the scheme using probabilistic seismic hazard and fragility curves. Even when earthquake ground motions are required in Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS), they are generated to fit the specified response spectra, such as uniform hazard spectra at a specified exceedance probability. These ground motions, however, are not directly linked with corresponding seismic source characteristics. In this paper, the authors propose a methodology based on MCS to reproduce a set of input ground motions to develop an advanced PRA scheme that can explain the exceedance probability and sequence of functional loss in a nuclear power plant. These generated motions are consistent with the seismic hazard for the target site and their seismic source characteristics can be recognized in detail.

In the preceding study, the methodology to generate ground-motion time histories for advanced PRA of NPPs was proposed by Nishida et al.. They are consistent with seismic hazard at reference site, and incorporate uncertainties of seismic-source characteristics. The ground motions utilized in conventional PRA are generated to fit to specified spectra such as UHS, and they are often generated without considering the variation of spectra. Even if it is considered, their inter-period correlations are generally assumed to be 1.0. In this paper, the authors prepared some cases of ground-motions sets. Ground motions are generated to fit to the response spectra calculated from hazard-consistent ground motions. While the target response spectra have the same median for all case, they have different variation and inter-period correlation. The response analyses of general RC structure and PWR building are conducted and the damage frequencies of simplified equipment system are compared.

Sorption of Eu(III) on granite; EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, batch and modeling studies

Eu(III) sorption on granite was examined by the combined microscopic and macroscopic approaches. Polished thin sections of the granite were reacted with solutions containing 10 $$mu$$M of Eu(III) and analyzed using EPMA and LA-ICP-MS. The Eu enrichment up to 6 wt.% was observed on most of the biotite grains. The Eu-enriched parts commonly lose K, which is the interlayer cation of biotite, indicating that the sorption mode is cation exchange in the interlayer. Batch Eu(III) sorption experiments on granite and biotite powders were conducted. The macroscopic sorption behavior of biotite was consistent with that of granite. The obtained sorption edges can be reproduced reasonably by the modeling considering single-site cation exchange reactions. Granite is complex mineral assemblages. However, the combined microscopic and macroscopic approaches revealed that elementary reactions by single phase can be representative for the bulk sorption reaction in complex mineral assemblages.

A New method for separating the $$D$$$$_{3}$$ and $$C$$$$_{2v}$$ isomers of C$$_{78}$$

A new chemical method can be applied to isolate the isomers of C$$_{78}$$. The photochemical cycloaddition of a mixture of C$$_{78}$$($$D$$$$_{3}$$) and C$$_{78}$$($$C$$$$_{2v}$$) with disilirane affords only the mono-adduct of the $$C$$$$_{2v}$$ isomer of C$$_{78}$$. The counter part (C$$_{78}$$($$D$$$$_{3}$$)) does not give the mono-adduct with disilirane. The $$D$$$$_{3}$$ isomer itself and the adduct of the $$C$$$$_{2v}$$ isomer of C$$_{78}$$ with disilirane was easily separated by a HPLC procedure. A facile oxidative desilylation of the adduct took place, resulting in the formation of pristine C$$_{78}$$($$C$$$$_{2v}$$). In this context, the separation and the isolation of two isomers of C$$_{78}$$($$C$$$$_{2v}$$) and C$$_{78}$$($$D$$$$_{3}$$) were successfully accomplished by using a silylation-oxidative desilylation process.

The bending of Si substrate has been measured optically in the oxidation of Si(110) surface and variation of curvature for (001) and (-110) directions have been evaluated. Furthermore, time evolutions of oxygen adsorption content and its chemical bonding states have been measured by photoemission spectroscopy to discuss inisotropy of the Si(110) oxidation in comjunction with substrate curvature measurements. Oxygen adsorption content was evaluated from O1s photoemission and chemical bonding states were evaluated from Si2p photoemission. O$$_{2}$$ gas pressure was ranging from 5.0$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ Pa to 6.7$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ and substrate temperature was 873 K. Compressive stress was detected in the (-110) direction. In turn, stretching stress was detected. The photoemission spectroscopy indicated that a layer-by-layer oxidation was not took place. The stretching stress in the (001) direction implies that oxidation of B-bonds which have components along the (001) direction takes place.

We report here the results on single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis of the Gd@C$$_{82}$$ carbene adduct (Gd@C$$_{82}$$(ad), Ad=adamantylidene). The Gd atom in Gd@C$$_{82}$$(Ad) is located at an off-centered position near a hexagonal ring in the C2v-C$$_{82}$$ cage, as found for M@C$$_{82}$$ (M = Sc and La) and La@C$$_{82}$$(Ad). Theoretical calculation also confirms the position of the Gd atom in the X-ray crystal structure.
