Supramolecular organization of extractant molecules impacts metal ions separation behavior. Probing bulk and interfacial structures of the relevant systems is expected to provide key insights into the metal ion selectivity and kinetic aspects. The supramolecular features of two solvent extraction systems based on malonamide extractants THMA in toluene and DBMA in n-heptane were studied using small-angle X-ray scattering for the organic bulk phases, as well as interfacial tension and neutron reflectivity measurements for the interfaces. In the bulk solution, THMA forms dimeric/trimeric associates but no aggregates in toluene, while DBMA forms large aggregates in n-heptane. On the other hand, THMA accumulates in a diffuse layer at the interface at high THMA concentration, whereas DBMA forms a compact but thinner layer. After Pd(II) extraction, the thickness of interfacial layers decreases in the case of THMA, and totally vanishes in the case of DBMA. Based on these new structural information, two mechanisms are proposed for Pd(II) and Nd(III) extraction with malonamides. In toluene, THMA associates slightly accumulate in the vicinity of the interface, then coordinate Pd(II) and diffuse into the organic bulk phase. In n-heptane, DBMA aggregates adsorb at the interface then pick up Nd(III) cations in their polar cores and finally diffuse into the bulk.

The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic and X rays together with the hypersatellite X rays around 6 keV. This signature reflects the time-dependent screening of the nuclear charge by the negative muon and the -shell electrons, accompanied by electron side-feeding. Assisted by a simulation, this data clearly reveals the electronic - and -shell hole production and their temporal evolution during the muon cascade process.

The monitor employs a sheet-shaped gas flow formed by a technique of rarefied gas dynamics. A simplified analysis method was developed to reconstruct the beam intensity profile from the obtained image. The developed profile monitor and the analysis method were applied to measure the J-PARC 3 MeV H beam profile. The root mean square values of the profiles were consistent with the ones obtained by a wire-scanning-type beam profile monitor. The beam loss due to the gas sheet injection was measured as a beam-current reduction. The amount of the beam current decreased in proportion to the gas sheet flux and the reduction ranged from 0.004 to 2.5%. The assembled system was capable of reconstructing a beam profile from a single shot beam pulse (1.710 protons in 50 s).

Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:11.15(Environmental Sciences)After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the radiation dose for first responders was not evaluated accurately due to lack of the monitoring data. It has been important to evaluate a radiation dose for workers in emergency response at a nuclear accident. In this study, a new device which can evaluate both of external and internal exposure doses was developed and the performance of various environmental radiation monitors including commercially available monitors were tested and compared from the viewpoint of an environmental monitoring at emergency situation. Background counts of the monitors and the ambient dose equivalent rate were measured in Fukushima Prefecture. The detection limit for beta particles was evaluated by the method of ISO11929. The sensitivity for gamma-rays of the dust monitor using a ZnS(Ag) and a plastic scintillator was high, but that of the external exposure monitor using a silicon photodiode with CsI(Tl) crystal was relatively low. The detection limit ranged 190-280 Bq m at 100 Sv h, exceeding the detection limit of 100 Bq m in the minimum requirement by the National Regulation Authority in Japan. Use of the shielding with lead is necessary to achieve the minimum requirement. These results indicate that the dust monitor using a ZnS(Ag) scintillator and a plastic scintillator is suitable for the external exposure monitor and the developed internal exposure monitor is for the internal exposure monitor at emergency situation among the evaluated monitors. In the future study, the counting efficiency, the relative uncertainty and the performance of the detection for alpha particles will be evaluated, and it will be considered which type of a monitor is suitable after taking the portability into account.

In this study, a portable radioactive plume monitor using a silicon photodiode was developed for the detection of a radioactive plume (e.g. I, Cs and Cs) in an emergency situation. It was found that the background count rate was proportional to ambient dose equivalent rate and the detection limit for the monitor at 20 Sv h as an ambient dose equivalent rate was evaluated to be 187 Bq m using the ISO11929 method. These results suggest that the detection limit for the system can be decreased effectively by lead shielding with optimized thickness.

Times Cited Count:96 Percentile:99.72(Nuclear Science & Technology)We performed a benchmark study for 58 cases using the recent version 2.88 of the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) in the following fields: particle production cross-sections for nuclear reactions, neutron transport calculations, and electro-magnetic cascade. This paper reports details for 22 cases. In cases of nuclear reactions with energies above 100 MeV and electro-magnetic cascade, overall agreements were found to be satisfactory. On the other hand, PHITS did not reproduce the experimental data for an incident proton energy below 100 MeV, because the intranuclear cascade model INCL4.6 in PHITS is not suitable for the low-energy region. For proton incident reactions over 100 MeV, PHITS did not reproduce fission product yields due to the problem of high-energy fission process in the evaporation model GEM. To overcome these inaccuracies, we are planning to incorporate a high-energy version of the evaluated nuclear data library JENDL-4.0/HE, and so on.

Distribution of radiocesium existing on the waterbed such as lake or pond was concerned about at the present that passed for two years by an accident. Here, the direct measurement technique of the radiocesium concentration (in-situ measurement technique) was developed. This method was used an plastic scintillation detector (p-Scanner). This detector carried out quick measurement of a large area. In addition, the count-rate of p-Scanner was converted to the radiocesium concentration (Ba/kg-wet) by comparative measurement of -ray spectrometer. We applied the technique to the agricultural pond in Fukushima and made a map of distribution of radiocesium concentration.

Times Cited Count:17 Percentile:76.97(Instruments & Instrumentation)The Intranuclear cascade with emission of light fragment (INC-ELF) code has been developed and implemented in the particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS). The INC-ELF code explicitly includes nucleon correlations within the framework of the INC model to describe light fragment emissions from nuclear spallation reactions. In addition to the degrees of freedom of nucleons, the developed code also accounts for pions, and , and it can cover the energy range up to 3 GeV. The predictive capabilities of the ELF/PHITS system have been verified through comparison with a diverse set of experimental observations. As a result, our ELF/PHITS code has demonstrated strong predictive capability for all of these data, although areas requiring future study remain due to the lack of experimental data on high-energy cluster production.

Th in the Pacific Ocean have been described well using the reversible-scavenging model. However, we observed the depletion of total Th. The enhanced vertical eddy diffusion derived from the complex topography of the western Pacific Ocean might promote bottom scavenging and transport of the low Th in deep water to the upper layers.

In this project, we constructed the pulsed neutron beamline that was aimed to obtain neutron capture cross-sections of long-lived fission products and minor actinides accurately. The energy spectra, spatial distributions, and pulses of the beam were studied by measurements and simulation calculations, and they were found to be consistent with those of the beamline design. In this paper, we present the overview of the project and the properties of the neutron beam provided by this beam line.

Sedimentary rock obtained from Horonobe URL test site in Hokkaido, Japan, (accessible pore diameter is around several to several ten nanometer) was used. The Diffusion behaviors of Eu were examined based on reservoir depletion method coupled with analysis of inner distribution of the radioactive elements in the rock. Time sequence of concentration of each radioactive element as well as the humic substance in the reservoir was obtained as a function of concentration and molecular size of humic substance. Coexistence of humic substance reduced the depletion of Eu in the reservoir, indicating complexation between the radioactive elements and the humic substance. On the contrary, obvious decrease of humic substance in the reservoir was not observed in the system. This observation suggests that the radioactive elements became hard to diffuse into the sedimentary rock due to an increase of their size through complexation with the humic substance. The sorption of Eu was reduced with increase of the humic substance although the sorption of the humic substance was not influenced by the existence of Th or Eu. The diffusion and sorption of Eu were found to be reduced in the presence of humic substance.

The radionuclides detected in the former period were thought to originate from the global fallout. On the other hand, the source of Co in the latter period has remained unclear because the Co concentration decreased continuously with shorter half-lives than the physical half-lives. This tendency suggests that the source of Co in 1996-2005 was identical and was temporary supplied to the East China Sea. Investigations of common octopus in the other area indicated that the origin of the pollutant source of Co in 1996-2005 occurred locally in the restricted area in the East China Sea rather than in the coastal area of Japan.

Times Cited Count:39 Percentile:59.61(Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)In an attempt to control protein incorporation in a crystal lattice, a leucine zipper-like hydrophobic interface (comprising four leucine residues) was introduced into a helical region (helix 2) of the human pancreatic ribonuclease 1 (RNase 1) that was predicted to form a suitable crystallization interface. Although crystallization of wild type RNase 1 has not yet been reported, the RNase 1 mutant having four leucines (4L-RNase 1) was successfully crystallized under several different conditions. The crystal structures were subsequently determined by X-ray crystallography by molecular replacement using the structure of bovine RNase A. The overall structure of 4L-RNase 1 is quite similar to that of the bovine RNase A, and the introduced leucine residues formed the designed crystal interface. To further characterize the role of the introduced leucine residues in crystallization of RNase 1, the number of leucines was reduced to three or two (3L- and 2L-RNase 1, respectively). Both mutants crystallized and a similar hydrophobic interface as in 4L-RNase 1 was observed. A related approach to engineer crystal contacts at helix 3 of RNase 1 (N4L-RNase 1) was also evaluated. N4L-RNase 1 also successfully crystallized, and formed the expected hydrophobic packing interface. These results suggest that appropriate introduction of a leucine zipper-like hydrophobic interface can promote intra molecular symmetry for more efficient protein crystallization in crystal lattice engineering efforts.

For all compositions, a sharp superlattice peak of the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) structure is replaced by a pair of ICD peaks with the modulation vector parallel to the CuO octahedral tilting direction, that is, the diagonal Cu-Cu direction of the CuO plane, above the LTO-HTT transition temperature . The temperature dependences of the incommensurability for all samples scale approximately as , while those of the integrated intensity of the ICD peaks scale as . These observations together with absence of ICD peaks in the non-superconducting sample evince a universal incommensurate lattice instability of hole-doped 214 cuprates in the superconducting regime.
