Estimation of double-differential cross-sections of $$^9$$Be(p,xn) reaction for new nuclear data library JENDL-5

We have evaluated double-differential cross-sections (DDX) of the $$^9$$Be(p,xn) reaction based on the function proposed by Wakabayashi et al. up to 12 MeV. Through compilation in the ENDF-6 format file, data processing, and neutronics analysis with MC simulation codes MCNP and PHITS to thick target yield (TTY) measurements, the function was re-confirmed to give more reasonable DDX data than those in our previous library JENDL-4.0/HE and ENDF/B-VIII.0. We finally decided to reduce the absolute cross-sections by 15% for our new nuclear data library JENDL-5 since the prediction ability of neutronics simulation was much better than that based on the original function. Through comprehensive comparisons of the simulation results on TTY at different proton energies and neutron emission angles, we conclude that JENDL-5 gives the best estimation in the world.

Japan have promoted the peaceful use of plutonium with the nuclear non-proliferation commitment based on IAEA safeguards agreement and Japan-US nuclear cooperation agreement, as well as ensuring transparency of the policy that Japan has no plutonium without purpose of use. In promoting the nuclear fuel cycle, adherence to those measures and maintaining plutonium utilization by means of plutonium-thermal, and a fast reactor cycle to achieve large-scale and long-term energy supply and environmental improvement, therefore, further research and development is essential.

In order to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, it is important not only to ensure safety but also to ensure nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security. Japan has contributed to the international community through strengthening nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security capabilities with technical and human resource development. However, in the wake of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, Japan's nuclear power plants have not restarted or plutonium use has not progressed smoothly. Concerns have been shown. Towards appropriate steps of Japan's nuclear fuel cycle policy, such concerns are examined and future efforts are summarized.

Diamond is interested by many researchers as an excellent candidate material with advantages in the radiation-hardness. For the time-resolved detection of single-ions with several hundred MeV, transmission E detector using thin film CVD diamond is now under investigation for the futuristic utilization in a microbeam line of the AVF cyclotron at JAEA/Takasaki TIARA facility as replacing materials of the beam extraction window. In this research, a Single Crystalline (SC) 50 m thick CVD diamond film ion detector was fabricated for the investigation of the responses and radiation hardness under the focused ion microbeam irradiation. Transient Ion Beam Induced Current (TIBIC) experiment was executed by single hit irradiation of 15 MeV O$$^{4+}$$ scanning area of 50 $$mu$$m$$^2$$ and the transient signals with time width of several nano-secounds were consecutively recorded by a high speed (15 GHz) Digital Storage Oscilloscope during the irradiation. The decreases in the individual pulse height was observed by increasing the total amount of the ion dose irradiated in the focused area. These changes were recovered in temporal conversion of applied bias voltages thus trend of decrease were able to be controlled by changing bias settings and irradiation conditions during the experiments.

The development of flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology has reached a milestone that separate-effect experimental data under a high Reynolds number regime including swirl and deflected inflow conditions are available for the validation of the methodology. On the other hand, technical standards are desirable to be documented for designers of sodium-cooled fast reactors. From such a background, the documentation of a flow-induced vibration design guideline has been made for the hot-leg piping of Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor. This paper describes the design guideline of the flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology, which has been informed from main separate-effect experiments, as well as supplemental interpretation for the guideline.

Thin film CVD diamond detector is now under investigation for the utilization as a transmission detector for ionized particle in single-ion-hit by replacing materials of the beam extraction window in a microbeam line of the AVF cyclotron at JAEA/Takasaki. In this research, a spectroscopy-grade 50 $$mu$$m thick-film Single Crystalline (SC) CVD diamond detector with size of 4.6 mm $$times$$ 4.6 mm was characterized using Ion Beam Induced Charge (IBIC) and Transient Ion Beam Induced Current (TIBIC) systems. The detector was irradiated with 1-3 MeV H$$^{+}$$ and 15 MeV O$$^{4+}$$ microbeams. Significant decrease of pulse height of IBIC signals was observed at 15 MeV O$$^{4+}$$ irradiation, however, this peak degradation easily recovered in a short time by release of bias voltages. This temporal degradation effect was enhanced in areas damaged by previous ion irradiation. Therefore, the temporal peak degradation seems to be caused by the polarization effect due to charge captured by defects in diamond or/and at the surface.

A study on flow induced vibration in the primary cooling system of Japan Sodium cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) consisting of large diameter pipe and pipe elbow with short curvature radius ("short-elbow") has been conducted. Flow-induced vibration in the short-elbow is an important issue in design study of JSFR, because it may affect to structural integrity of the pipe. In this paper, unsteady flow characteristics in the JSFR short-elbow pipe related to the large-scale eddy motion were estimated based on knowledge from existing studies for curved pipes and scaled water experiments and numerical simulations for the JSFR hot-leg piping.

X-ray diffraction recording from single axonemes of eukaryotic flagella

We report the first X-ray diffraction patterns recorded from single axonemes of eukaryotic flagella with a diameter of only $$<$$0.2 $$mu$$m, by using the technique of cryomicrodiffraction. A spermatozoon isolated from Drosophila melanogaster, was mounted straight in a glass capillary, quickly frozen and its 800-$$mu$$m segment was irradiated end-on with intense synchrotron radiation X-ray microbeams (diameter, 2 $$mu$$m) at 74 K. Well-defined diffraction patterns were recorded, consisting of a large number of isolated reflection spots. The patterns had features of an 18-fold rotational symmetry as expected from the axonemal structure. The diffraction patterns were compared with the results of model calculations based on a published electron micrograph of the Drosophila axoneme. The comparison provided information on the native state of axoneme, including estimates of axonemal diameter and interdoublet spacing.

A Compact intermediate state of calmodulin in the process of target binding

Calmodulin undergoes characteristic conformational changes by binding Ca$$^{2+}$$. We measured the conformational changes of calmodulin upon Ca$$^{2+}$$ and mastoparan binding using the time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering technique combined with flash photolysis of caged calcium. This measurement system covers the time range of 0.5-180 ms. Within 10 ms of the stepwise increase in Ca$$^{2+}$$ concentration, we identified a distinct compact conformational state with a drastically different molecular dimension. This process is too fast to study with a conventional stopped-flow apparatus. The compact conformational state was also observed without mastoparan, indicating that the calmodulin forms a compact globular conformation by itself upon Ca$$^{2+}$$ binding. This new conformational state of calmodulin seems to regulate Ca$$^{2+}$$ binding and conformational changes in the N-terminal domain.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

Unsteady elbow pipe flow to develop a flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology for JSFR

This paper describes the current status of flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology development for primary cooling pipes in JSFR, in particular emphasizing on recent R&D activities that investigate unsteady elbow pipe flow. The experiment using the 1/3-scale test section was performed to investigate the effect of swirl flow at the inlet. Although the flow separation region was distorted at the downstream from the elbow, the experiment clarified that the effect of swirl flow on pressure fluctuation onto the pipe wall was not significant. The simulation revealed that Reynolds number scarcely affects flow patterns and flow velocity distributions.
