We have studied ion impact effects on atomic structure in terms of X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical absorption and electrical resistivity of Mn (6%)-doped ZnO films under 100 MeV Xe ion impact at room temperature. We find the monotonic reduction of the XRD intensity to 1/50 of that of unirradiated film at 5 $$times$$10$$^{14}$$ cm$$^{-2}$$, little bandgap change ($$<$$0.02 eV) and decrease of the resistivity by 4 order of magnitude. The resistivity modification has been compared with that by irradiations of low energy ions such as 100 keV Ne and N, which show more effective decrease of resistivity. We also find that temperature (T) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility ($$chi$$) of Mn-doped ZnO follows the Curie law: $$chi$$ = $$chi$$$$_{o}$$ + C/T (i.e., paramagnetic) and the Curie constant C decreases to a half of that before irradiation (C$$_{O}$$ = 0.012 emu cm$$^{-3}$$ K) at 100 MeV Xe ion fluence of 10$$^{12}$$ cm$$^{-2}$$.

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium charge-state distributions of 2.0 MeV/u carbon ions passing through carbon foils

Both equilibrium and non-equilibrium charge-state distributions were studied experimentally for 2.0 MeV/u carbon ions after passing through carbon foils. Measured charge-state distribution established the equilibrium at a target thickness of 10 $$mu$$g/cm$$^{2}$$ and this remained unchanged until a maximum target thickness of 98 $$mu$$g/cm$$^{2}$$. The equilibrium charge-state distribution, the equilibrium mean charge-state, and the width and skewness of the equilibrium distribution were compared with predictions using existing semi-empirical formulae as well as simulation results, including the ETACHA code. It was found that charge-state distributions, mean charge states, and distribution widths for C$$^{2+}$$, C$$^{3+}$$, and C$$^{4+}$$ incident ions merged into quasi-equilibrium values at a target thickness of 5.7 $$mu$$g/cm$$^{2}$$ in the pre-equilibrium region and evolved simultaneously to the "real equilibrium" values for all of the initial charge states, including C$$^{5+}$$ and C$$^{6+}$$ ions. Two kinds of simulation, ETACHA and solution of rate equations taking only single electron transfers into account, were used, and both of them reproduced the measured charge evolution qualitatively. The quasi-equilibrium behavior could be reproduced with the ETACHA code, but not with solution of elementary rate equations.

Surface amorphization in Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ induced by swift heavy ion irradiation

Microstructure in single crystal Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ specimens developed during irradiation by 70-160 MeV-Xe ions has been examined with transmission electron microscope (TEM). Amorphization was observed around 800 nm depth through from ion-beam incident surface of the specimen. The amorphization was also evaluated with XRD technique. TEM observation also indicated that tracks were formed by irradiation at the deeper region than that of the amorphous layers. The number density and size of the tracks have been decreased with the depth from the ion-incident surface. It suggests that amorphization has been occurred by the overlapping of the tracks. It was also obvious that the thickness of the amorphous layers were smaller than those observed in poly-crystal alumina specimens. This may be interpreted by the difference of electronic energy loss in the specimen; lower energy loss for single crystal specimens for their crystallographic orientation against to the incident ion-beam.

In order to investigate electronic stopping power dependence of ion-track size in UO$$_{2}$$, ion-tracks in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with various ions with the specific energy in the order of 1 MeV/u have been observed by a transmission electron microscope. The ion-tracksize shows monotonic increase as a function of the electronic stopping power. Theion-track size obtained for UO$$_{2}$$ is smaller than that obtained for CeO$$_{2}$$, although these two compounds have same crystallographic structure and similar thermal properties. The ion-track sizes for irradiations with ions having relatively low energy of about1 MeV/u are smaller than those expected from the thermal spike models based on melting temperature criterion. The possible interpretations for the unusually smallion-tracks observed for UO$$_{2}$$ are discussed.

We have studied electronic- and atomic-structure modifications of polycrystalline WO$$_{3}$$ films (bandgap of $$sim$$ 3 eV) by ion irradiation. WO$$_{3}$$ films were prepared by oxidation of W films on MgO substrates and of W sheets. We find disordering or amorphization, the lattice expansion of $$sim$$ 1.5% and bandgap increase of 0.2 eV after 90 MeV Ni ion irradiation at $$sim$$ 3 $$times$$ 10$$^{12}$$ cm$$^{2}$$. A broad peak of optical absorption appears around 1.6 $$mu$$m by ion irradiation. We also find that the erosion yield by high-energy ions with the equilibrium charge exceeds 10$$^{4}$$ and that the erosion yield under ion impact with non-equilibrium charge (90 MeV Ni$$^{+10}$$) is $$sim$$ 1/5 of that with the equilibrium charge (89 MeV Ni$$^{+19}$$). Effects of depth dependence of the ion mean charge on the erosion yields are discussed. The erosion yield by low-energy ions is also presented.

A non-destructive and on-line diffusion tracing in Li ionic conductors has been demonstrated. As a tracer, pulsed beam of $$^{8}$$Li was implanted into LiGa. By analyzing the time dependent yield of the $$alpha$$-particles decaying from $$^{8}$$Li, diffusion coefficients were extracted with a high accuracy. The ordering of Li vacancies in the Li-deficient $$beta$$ phase of LiGa was observed for the first time in terms of the Li diffusion.

Present status of JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator

In FY2006, a tandem accelerator was operated for 201days. The maximum voltage was 18 MV and the accelerated ion species was 19 elements (26 nuclides). As the trouble case which occurred previous year, the change of the beam shape occurred often in the injection beam line of the tandem accelerator. The cause was the contact failure of the pole connector of the electrostatics quadrupole lens. Generally, it was difficult to confirm the connection status of the opened pole but we specified a connection abnormal part by the capacitive coupling method. This technique is useful technology which can be applied to the other electrostatics optics elements. Because the charging electric current flowed only about usual about 60% and the terminal voltage became unstable, we opened a tank and checked the charging system. As a result, a problem was confirmed to the damaging of resistance and the installation of the cable. In the seminar, the operation, maintenance and the accelerator development of the tandem accelerator in FY2006 are described.
