Japan Atomic Energy Agency has conducted a conceptional design study of a sodium-cooled fast reactor in a frame work of the FBR feasibility study. The plant system concept for a commercial step is intended to minimize a vessel diameter to achieve an economical competitiveness. Therefore, the coolant in the vessel has relatively higher velocity and gas entrainment (GE) prevention from a liquid surface in the reactor vessel becomes one of important issues for the thermal-hydraulic design. In order to establish a design criteria for the GE prevention, the GE from vortex dimples at the liquid surface was investigated by a working group. The 1st proposal of "Design Guideline for Gas Entrainment Prevention Using CFD Method" was established based on the knowledge gained from the working group activities. This report introduces each study in the working group to clarify the basis of the design guideline.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

The JAERI FEL has recently discovered the new FEL lasing of 255fs ultra fast pulse, 6-9% high-efficiency, one gigawatt high peak power, a few kilowatts average power, and wide tunability of medium and far infrared wavelength regions at the same time. Using the new lasing and energy-recovery linac technology, we could extend a more powerful and more efficient free-electron laser (FEL) than 10kW and 25%, respectively, for nuclear industry, pharmacy, medical, defense, shipbuilding, semiconductor industry, chemical industries, environmental sciences, space-debris, power beaming and so on. In order to realize such a tunable, highly-efficient, high average power, high peak power and ultra-short pulse FEL, we need the efficient and powerful FEL driven by the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero boil-off super-conducting RF linac with an energy-recovery geometry. Our discussions on the FEL will cover the application of non-thermal peeling, cutting, and drilling to decommission the nuclear power plants, and to prevent stress-corrosion cracking in nuclear industry and roadmap for the industrial FELs, the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off cryostat concept and operational experience, the new, highly-efficient, high-power, and ultra fast pulse lasing mode, and the energy-recovery geometry.

The second maintenance report at plutonium conversion development facility

The plutonium conversion development facility (PCDF) has been operated for 17 years and about 12 tons plutonium-uranium mixed oxide (MOX) powder has been converted since operation started in 1983. The first maintenance program for aging of apparatus was carried out from 1993 to 1994. The calcination-reduction fumace, liquid waste evaporator had been dismantled and renewed. The second maintenance program was carried out form 1998 to 1999. The microwave ovens, powder blender, ventilation control panel and so on were dismantled and renewed. Large volume radioactive wastes were generated during this maintenance such as the furnace, the filter casings and glove boxes. These wastes were too large to be packed into the waste container and these wastes were polluted by MOX powder unfixed on these surface. SO cutting and packing operation for these wastes and recovery of MOX powder from them were carried out. In this report, the method of this cutting and packing operation, the radioactive exposure to the operators in this operation, the estimation of nuclear material quantity migrated to filters, the evaluation of re-floating factor of radioactive material, etc. were discussed.

Measurement of iridium using neutron activation analysis with $$gamma$$-$$gamma$$ coincidence

The multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection method developed for nuclide quantification has achieved better resolution and sensitivity than the ordinary singles $$gamma$$-ray detection method. The INAA combined with this method is called NAAMG (Neutron Activation Analysis with Multiple $$gamma$$ ray detection) and has been successfully applied to various fields. In the case of neutron activation analysis, measurements of $$gamma$$-rays from trace elements are strongly interfered by the $$gamma$$-rays from isotopes produced from major elements, e.g., Na-24, Mn-56. Therefore chemical separation processes are sometimes required to eliminate the major elements for determination of the trace elements. Measurements of iridium in geological sample were carried out by this method. Samples were irradiated at the JRR-3. Iridium concentrations in several standard rock samples and geological samples were also measured by this method. Fifty to one hundred mg of each sample were sealed in quartz tube and irradiated together with iridium standard. After irradiation, the $$gamma$$-$$gamma$$ coincidence of multiple $$gamma$$ rays from the Ir-192 was measured with the Ge detectors array, GEMINI-II. $$gamma$$ rays from about 10 ppt of iridium in geological samples can be detected by this method.
