Development of the buckling evaluation method for large scale vessels in fast reactors by the testing of Grade 91 steel and austenitic stainless steel vessels subjected to horizontal and cyclic vertical loading

Okafuji, Takashi*; Miura, Kazuhiro*; Sago, Hiromi*; Murakami, Hisatomo*; Ando, Masanori; Okajima, Satoshi

Proceedings of ASME 2023 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2023) (Internet), 8 Pages, 2023/07

Buckling evaluation methods capable of evaluating elasto-plastic buckling under axial compression, bending, and shear loads are required for cylindrical vessels of fast reactors to cope with thinning due to increasing diameter and application to the seismic isolation design against huge seismic ground motion. In this study, in order to confirm the applicability of the proposal evaluation method, several buckling tests and FE analyses were carried out using the specimens made of Gr.91 and austenitic stainless steel. The buckling modes and strength data in the load region where the interaction of cyclic axial compression, bending and shear buckling could occur were examined. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposal evaluation method estimated the buckling load in the tests conservatively.

This paper provides an overview of plant system studies to establish a common technical view for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor concept between France and Japan based on ASTRID600 and the new concept with downsized output called ASTRID150. One of important issues on a reactor structure design is to enhance seismic resistance to be tolerable against strong earthquake such that postulated in Japan. A concept of High Frequency Design is shared, and the design options related to HFD have been examined and design recommendations are established. In addition, this paper include results of studies for a steam generator, a decay heat removal system, a fuel handling system and a containment vessel.

The authors are carrying out conceptual design studies for a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor. There are main challenges such as measures against severe earthquake in Japan, thermal hydraulic in a reactor vessel (RV), a decay heat removal system design. When the JP-pool SFR of 650 MWe is installed in Japan, it shall be designed against the severe seismic conditions. Additionally, a newly three-dimensional seismic isolation system is under development.

In this study, in order to confirm the applicability of the proposal evaluation method, several buckling tests and FE analyses were carried out using the specimens made of Modified 9Cr-1Mo steel. The buckling modes and strength data in the load region where the interaction of cyclic axial compression, bending and shear buckling could occur were examined. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposal evaluation method estimated the buckling load in the tests conservatively. Moreover, a series of finite element analyzes using a model with residual stress due to welding revealed that the effect of residual stress on buckling strength is negligible in the evaluation method.

Seismic insertability of control rods in pool type SFR

Takano, Kazuya; Kato, Atsushi; Uchita, Masato*; Murakami, Hisatomo*

no journal, ,

Control rods of pool-type SFR are not fixed radially in the control rod guide tubes. Relative offset between control rods and around in-vessel structures occurs in an earthquake situation. The relative offset could lead three-point restraint of the control rods and difficulty of their insertion. In the present study, the seismic offset was quantitively evaluated and was compared with the criteria of the three-point restraint in the current design of pool-type SFR with 600 MWe. As the evaluated offset is below the criteria, the three-point restraint in an earthquake can be prevented in the current design of pool-type SFR. In addition, several measures were examined to increase the margin of control rods insertability.

Study on the effect of initial imperfection shape on buckling strength of cylindrical vessel under the horizontal and vertical loads

Okafuji, Takashi*; Miura, Kazuhiro*; Sago, Hiromi*; Murakami, Hisatomo*; Ando, Masanori; Miyazaki, Masashi

no journal, ,

Buckling evaluation methods capable of evaluating elasto-plastic buckling under axial compression, bending, and shear loads are required for cylindrical vessels of fast reactors to cope with thinning due to increasing diameter and application to the seismic isolation design against huge seismic ground motion. In this study, the effect of initial imperfection and stress of large vessels manufactured by welding multiple plates on the buckling load was evaluated via a series of analyses. In these analyses, the superimposition of global imperfection over the entire vessel due to accumulation of misalignment in buckling mode imperfection had minimal effect on the buckling load. Accordingly, the length for measuring the imperfection amplitude should correspond to the wavelength of the buckling mode. The local imperfection and residual stress by welding also exerted small effects on the buckling load.
