This paper provides an overview of plant system studies to establish a common technical view for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor concept between France and Japan based on ASTRID600 and the new concept with downsized output called ASTRID150. One of important issues on a reactor structure design is to enhance seismic resistance to be tolerable against strong earthquake such that postulated in Japan. A concept of High Frequency Design is shared, and the design options related to HFD have been examined and design recommendations are established. In addition, this paper include results of studies for a steam generator, a decay heat removal system, a fuel handling system and a containment vessel.

Fusion barrier distributions were extracted from these data, and compared with the coupled-channels calculations. It was found that the peak energies of the barrier distributions for the Ca + Pb and Ti + Pb systems coincide with those of the 2n evaporation channel cross sections for the systems, while that of the Ca + Cm is located slightly below the 4n evaporation ones. This results provide us helpful information to predict the optimum beam energy to synthesize superheavy nuclei.

Many studies for monitoring positron emitters with beam-induced PET technique have been performed by various groups to verify the proton beam range and the dose in the patient for quality assurance. The aim of this study was to develop a method for measuring the production cross sections of positron emitters using standard equipment for proton therapy. The time-activity curve was then obtained with a high-sensitivity PET scanner to extract the number of positron emitters produced in the target. The production cross sections for four reaction channels: O(p,pn)O, O(p,3p3n)C, O(p,2p2n)N, and C(p,pn)C were then measured. The cross sections for the O(p,pn)O reaction channel were consistent with data of previous experiments within the uncertainties, while those of C(p,pn)C were generally lower than data of previous experiments.

A synchrotron radiation beamline has been designed and manufactured at UVSOR facilities in Institute for Molecular Science to achieve high speed etching of Si by simultaneous irradiation of white synchrotron radiation and XeF molecules. A previously-found beamline was modified by a differential pumping system. A new experimental apparatus was manufactured. In that apparatus, a silicon wafer, exposed to XeF molecules sublimated from the solid, was irradiated by the white synchrotron radiation to be etched with a high speed. This high speed etching phenomenon is due to desorption of silicon fluorides formed by a surface reaction of silicon and fluorin atoms from the XeF molecules.

In this work, we demonstrate the irradiation effect of laser accelerated protons induced on human lung cancer cells. In-vitro A549 cells are irradiated with a proton dose of 20 Gy, resulting in a distinct formation of -H2AX foci as an indicator of DNA double-strand breaks. This is the first result showing that laser-driven ion beams can generate a lethal effect on cancer cells.
