Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) manages wide range of nuclear facilities. Many of these facilities are required to be performed adjustment with the aging and complement with the new regulatory standards and the earthquake resistant, since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident. It is therefore desirable to promote decommissioning of facilities that have reached the end of their productive life in order to reduce risk and maintenance costs. However, the progress of facility decommissioning require large amount of money and radioactive waste storage space. In order to address these issues, JAEA has formulated a "The Medium/Long-Term Management Plan of JAEA Facilities" with three pillars: (1) consolidation and prioritization of facilities, (2) assurance of facility safety, and (3) back-end countermeasures. In this plan, Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility has been selected as primary decommissioned facility, and dismantling of equipment in the facilities have been underway. In this report, size reduction activities of the glove box W-9 and a part of tunnel F-1, which was connected to W-9, are presented, and the obtained findings are highlighted. The glovebox W-9 had oxidation & reduction furnace, and pellet crushing machine as equipment interior. The duration of activity took six years from February 2014 to February 2020, including suspended period of 4 years due to the enhanced authorization approval process

Innovative and advanced nuclear reactors using plutonium fuel has been developed in each country. In order to develop a new nuclear fuel, irradiation tests are indispensable, and it is necessary to demonstrate the performance and safety of nuclear fuels. If we can develop a technology that accurately simulates irradiation behavior as a technology that complements the irradiation test, the cost, time, and labor involved in nuclear fuel research and development will be greatly reduced. And safety and reliability can be significantly improved through simulation of nuclear fuel irradiation behavior. In order to evaluate the performance of nuclear fuel, it is necessary to know the physical and chemical properties of the fuel at high temperatures. And it is indispensable to develop a behavior model that describes various phenomena that occur during irradiation. In previous research and development, empirical methods with fitting parameters have been used in many parts of model development. However, empirical techniques can give very different results in areas where there is no data. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to construct a scientific descriptive model that can extrapolate the basic characteristics of fuel to the composition and temperature, and to develop an irradiation behavior analysis code to which the model is applied.

Times Cited Count:43 Percentile:96.93(Astronomy & Astrophysics)Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)The microscopic origin of a magnetic phase diagram under pressure in a heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhSi was investigated using the Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. We investigated the temperature and pressure dependencies of -independent local fluctuations caused by the single-site Kondo effect. A universal scaling behavior observed on the energy scale of the local fluctuations in an entire pressure region demonstrates that a characteristic energy scale of Kondo interactions monotonically increases by applying pressure without a critical anomaly around the quantum critical pressure of antiferromagnetism. Our NMR result agrees with the Doniach picture of the heavy-fermion phase diagram, where the progressive delocalization of the -electrons occurs across , accompanied by the development of antiferromagnetic correlations among the -electrons.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:24.73(Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture)A communication-avoiding generalized minimum residual method (CA-GMRES) is implemented on a hybrid CPU-GPU cluster, targeted for the performance acceleration of iterative linear system solver in the gyrokinetic toroidal five-dimensional Eulerian code GT5D. In addition to the CA-GMRES, we implement and evaluate a modified variant of CA-GMRES (M-CA-GMRES) proposed in our previous study to reduce the amount of floating-point calculations. This study demonstrates that beneficial features of the CA-GMRES are in its minimum number of collective communications and its highly efficient calculations based on dense matrix-matrix operations. The performance evaluation is conducted on the Reedbush-L GPU cluster, which contains four NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs per compute node. The evaluation results show that the M-CA-GMRES is 1.09x, 1.22x and 1.50x faster than the CA-GMRES, the generalized conjugate residual method (GCR), and the GMRES, respectively, when 64 GPUs are used.

Times Cited Count:8 Percentile:66.68(Environmental Sciences)There has been significant concern about an increase of exposure dose in living sphere due to the accumulation of radiocesium discharged from contaminated mountainous forest in Fukushima. In this study, we investigated the history of radiocesium deposition on some floodplains in Fukushima. Radiocesium concentrations of river suspended particles and air dose rates at floodplains were also observed continuously. In many situations, annual sediment accumulation at floodplains was only several kg m and its radiocesium concentration was gradually decreasing in line with that of suspended particle. Simultaneously, air dose rates on floodplains were decreasing with time. In 2015 with heavy flood discharge, several hundred kg m of sediment accumulation and sharply decrease of air dose rate was observed at rivers without reservoir. Conversely, radiocesium accumulation at floodplain was significant reduced due to deposition on upstream reservoir.

The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

A communication-avoiding generalized minimal residual (CA-GMRES) method is applied to the gyrokinetic toroidal five dimensional Eulerian code GT5D, and its performance is compared against the original code with a generalized conjugate residual (GCR) method on the JAEA ICEX (Haswell), the Plasma Simulator (FX100), and the Oakforest-PACS (KNL). The CA-GMRES method has higher arithmetic intensity than the GCR method, and thus, is suitable for future Exa-scale architectures with limited memory and network bandwidths. In the performance evaluation, it is shown that compared with the GCR solver, its computing kernels are accelerated by , and the cost of data reduction communication is reduced from to of the total cost at 1,280 nodes.

A response function for each particle is calculated by the radiation transport code FLUKA. To validate a response function to high energy neutrons, benchmark experiments with quasi mono-energetic neutrons have been carried out at RCNP, Osaka University. For neutron irradiation with energies below 200 MeV, very good agreement was found comparing the FLUKA simulations and the measurements. In addition it was found that at proton energies of 250 and 392 MeV, results calculated with neutron sources underestimate the experimental data due to a non-negligible gamma component originating from the target Li(p,n)Be reaction.

Recently, many high-energy accelerators are used for various fields. Shielding data for high-energy neutrons are therefore very important from the point of view of radiation protection in high energy accelerator facilities. However, the shielding experimental data for high energy neutrons above 100 MeV are very poor both in quality and in quantity. In this study, neutron penetration spectral fluence and ambient dose through iron and concrete shields were measured with a Bonner sphere spectrometer (BSS). Quasi-monoenergetic neutrons were produced by the Li(p,xn) reaction by bombarding a 1-cm thick Li target with 246-MeV and 389-MeV protons in the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) of the Osaka University. Shielding materials are iron blocks with a thickness from 10 cm to 100 cm and concrete blocks with a thickness from 25 cm to 300 cm.

We have developed several hundreds of MeV p-Li quasi-monoenergetic neutron fields in the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University, Japan. In this study, we extended the measurements to higher energy with a p-Li quasi-monoenergetic neutron source, which was produced from a 1.0-cm-thick lithium target bombarded with 246 and 389 MeV protons, using a larger NE213 scintillator of 25.4-cm in diameter and 25.4-cm in thickness. The large NE213 have good energy resolution for high energy neutrons, because it can stop recoil protons up to 180 MeV. The measured data are compared with the Monte-Carlo codes (PHITS with JENDL-HE data library) in the energy spectra, time spectra and the attenuation length of the peak neutrons. This comparison shows good agreement between experiments and calculations. The attenuation length estimated from the well-fitted curves with single exponential form will be useful for the practical shielding design of high energy accelerator facilities.

The three main facilities, (1) the Accelerator Facility, (2) the Target Facility and (3) the Test Facility, are the subject of validation activities that include the construction of either full scale prototypes or smartly devised scaled down facilities that will allow a straightforward extrapolation to IFMIF needs. The installation of a Linac of 1.125 MW (125 mA and 9 MeV) of deuterons started in March 2013 in Rokkasho. The world largest liquid Li test loop is running in Oarai with an ambitious experimental programme for the years ahead. A full scale high flux test module that will house 1000 small specimens developed jointly in Europe and Japan has been constructed in Germany together with its He gas loop. A full scale medium flux test module to carry out on-line creep measurement has been constructed in Switzerland.

"Jimba" is a leading variety of white-flower chrysanthemum in Japan, although "Jimba" develops many axillary buds and also shows delayed flowering under a low temperature condition. Previously, we succeeded to produce new chrysanthemum variety "Aladdin" and "Imagine" that have a lesser number of axillary buds by ion beam irradiation. However, these varieties still show delayed flowering under a low temperature condition. In this study, we examined the effect of re-irradiation ofthese mutants by ion beams in improving flowering trait. The cultured leaves of "Aladdin" were irradiated with carbon ions and the regenerated plants were screened for the mutants that flowers earlier than the parental variety under a low temperature condition. Finally, we succeeded to produce new chrysanthemum variety "Aladdin 2" that develops a few axillary buds and shows early flowering traits. Thus, we demonstrated that the two important agronomic traits can be introduced by ion beam irradiation in a stepwise manner. The knowledge obtained in this study may be applicable for improving many kinds of plants.

The Knight shifts along the and axes have been measured as a function of temperatures in the paramagnetic state. At ambient pressure, the Knight shifts show the Ising-type anisotropy along the axis, which is similar to the magnetic susceptibility. The hyperfine coupling constants for Si along the and axes have been determined from Knight shifts versus static susceptibility plots.
