Slightly hydrogen-ordered state of ice IV evidenced by ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction

Ice IV is a metastable high-pressure phase of ice in which the water molecules exhibit orientational disorder. Although orientational ordering is commonly observed for other ice phases, it has not been reported for ice IV. We conducted ${it in situ}$ powder neutron diffraction experiments for DCl-doped D$$_{2}$$O ice IV to investigate hydrogen ordering in ice IV. We found abrupt changes in the temperature derivative of unit cell volume, dV/dT, at about 120 K, and revealed their slightly ordered structure at low temperatures based on the Rietveld method. The occupancy of the D1 site deviates from 0.5; it increased when samples were cooled at higher pressures and reached 0.282(5) at 2.38 GPa, 58 K. Our results evidence the presence of a low-symmetry hydrogen-ordered state corresponding to ice IV. It seems, however, difficult to experimentally access the completely ordered phase corresponding to ice IV by slow cooling at high pressure.

In JAEA, an ITER relevant control system for ITER gyrotron was developed according to Plant Control Design Handbook. This control system was developed based on ITER CODAC Core System and implemented state machine control of gyrotron operation system, sequential timing control of gyrotron oscillation startup, and data acquisition. The operation of ITER 170 GHz gyrotron was demonstrated with ITER relevant power supply configuration. This system is utilized for gyrotron operation test for ITER procurement. This report describes the architecture of gyrotron operation system, its basic and detailed design, and recent operation results.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

Magnesium dichloride decahydrate (MgCl$$_{2}$$10H$$_{2}$$O) and its deuterated counterpart (MgCl$$_{2}$$10D$$_{2}$$O) are identified for the first time by in-situ powder synchrotron X-ray and spallation neutron diffraction. These substances are crystallized from a previously unidentified nanocrystalline compound, which originates from an amorphous state at low temperature. A combination of a recently developed autoindexing procedure and the charge-flipping method reveals that the crystal structure of MgCl 10H$$_{2}$$O consists of an ABCABC... sequence of Mg(H$$_{2}$$O)$$_{6}$$ octahedra. The Cl$$^{-}$$ anions and remaining water molecules unconnected to the Mg$$^{2+}$$ cations bind the octahedra, similar to other water-rich magnesium dichloride hydrates. The D positions in MgCl$$_{2}$$10D$$_{2}$$O, determined by the difference Fourier methods using the neutron powder diffraction patterns at 2.5 GPa, show the features such as bifurcated hydrogen bonds and tetrahedrally coordinated O atoms.

Design study of poloidal field coil (PFC) locations and current distribution for the advanced divertor in the Demo tokamak reactor was presented. Concept of the super-X divertor (SXD) for Demo reactor has an outer divertor leg longer than the conventional divertor, and it extends outboard to increase both the target wetted area and connection length to the outer target ($$L_{//}$$). Equilibrium calculation code, TOSCA, was developed by introducing two parameters, i.e. super-X null radius ($$R_{SX}$$) and a ratio of the poloidal flux at the super-X null to that at the separatrix ($$f_{SX}$$). Some SXD magnetic configurations with minimal number of PFCs located outside toroidal field coil (TFC) were Demonstrated. Locations of the divertor target were also investigated. It was found that the flux expansion can be increased up to 4-10 depending on the target location and $$f_{SX}$$, and that SXD has an advantage to increase $$L_{//}$$ with $$f_{SX}$$. Thus, the divertor plasma temperature is expected to decrease at the same upstream plasma density. On the other hand, large currents for the divertor PFCs were necessary. Other arrangements of PFCs such as (1) larger $$R_{SX}$$ and (2) inside TFC, can reduce the PFC currents.

A neutron powder diffraction experiment was conducted to refine the hydrogen position of Mg-endmember deuterated wadsleyite. Preliminary refinement using the dry-structure determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a maximum peak Q1 of nuclear density in the difference Fourier map at the M3 octahedral edge, between the O1 and O4 atoms. Full Rietveld refinement was conducted assuming that the maximum peak corresponds to deuterium atom. The deuterium position was determined as (0.096, 0.289, 0.315) with occupancy of 8.2%. The structure determined by this study predicts that the hydration of wadsleyite has an anisotropic effect on diffusion properties.

We have developed a self-consistent integrated modelling of core and SOL/divertor transport. Thereby it enables us to investigate operation scenarios to be compatible with high confinement core plasma and detached divertor plasmas. To integrate a 1.5D core code (TOPICS-IB and TASK) and a 2D divertor code (SONIC), we introduce a new Multiple Program Multiple Data parallel computing system. For an integrated code including Monte-Carlo calculations, this system makes it possible to perform efficient simulations. The predictive simulation studies are carried out for JT-60SA with the integrated code (TOPICS-IB/SONIC) and the characteristics of the divertor heat load after the H-mode transition is clarified. We also discuss about the temporal behavior of divertor characteristics after an ELM crash.

A compact cubic-anvil high-pressure device was developed for in situ neutron powder diffraction studies. In this device, a cubic shaped pressure medium is compressed by six anvils, and neutron beam pass through gaps between the anvils. The first high-pressure experiment using this device was conducted at J-PARC and clearly showed the neutron diffraction patterns of Pb. Combining the cubic-anvil high-pressure device with a pulsed neutron source will prove to be a useful tool for neutron diffraction experiments.

Recent progress on the high power gyrotron development in JAEA is presented. The gyrotron is featured to have a triode type magnetron injection gun, a cylindrical resonator working at 170 GHz with TE$$_{31,8}$$ mode, a water-cooled diamond window and a depressed collector. After the demonstration of ITER basic performance, the gyrotron has been operated for 3 years, and recorded $$sim$$ 200 GJ of total output energy. In the next, a gyrotron which oscillates at higher order resonator mode, TE$$_{31,12}$$, is designed and fabricated to study the long pulse oscillation at greater than 1 MW. In parallel, feasibility studies of a CW-power modulation for NTM (Neo classical Tearing Mode) stabilization, a dual frequency gyrotron and a rapid frequency control are carried out. It is shown that these gyrotrons will be available with present technologies.

The self-sputtering yield and the reflection yield are important for a prediction of the tungsten impurity content penetrating into the main plasma in future fusion reactors. These yields greatly depend on the incident angle of impurities to the plasma facing components. The IMPGYRO code is applied to the analysis of the angle distribution of incident impurities and the effect of the incident angle and energy on the sputtering and reflection yields. The incident angle distribution is divided into several peaks corresponding to charge states. This is caused by the different acceleration for each charge state by the sheath. In the attached plasma case, the sheath increases the self-sputtering yield. This is due to the change of the incident angle by the sheath rather than the change of the incident energy. On the other hand, in the detached plasma case, the significant effects of the sheath on the sputtering yield and the reflection yield is not seen.
