We have optimized a cold neutron moderator to be operated at the RIKEN accelerator-driven compact neutron source. We selected a safe and easy to manage material, mesitylene, as the RANS cold moderator. An efficient moderator system was designed by studying and optimizing a coupled cold neutron moderator of mesitylene at 20 K with a polyethylene (PE) pre-moderator at room temperature in the slab geometry with Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) simulations. The parameters of mesitylene and PE thickness, the reflector, and the shielding configuration were studied to increase cold neutron intensities. Consequently, an integrated cold neutron intensity of 1.15$$times$$10$$^{3}$$n/cm$$^{2}$$/$$mu$$A at 2 m from the neutron-producing target was finally achieved, which was 12 times higher than that of the current PE moderator. The results showed attractive application prospect of mesitylene as cold neutron moderator material.

Changes in the mechanical properties of silk scaffold by $$gamma$$ rays-irradiation

Kawahara, Yutaka*; Sekiguchi, Takahiro*; Nishikawa, Yukihiro*; Nagasawa, Naotsugu

Nihon Shiruku Gakkai-Shi, 23, p.67 - 69, 2015/03

Silk aerogel has been prepared from liquid silk, and the influences of the $$gamma$$ ray-irradiation on its mechanical property have been investigated. The formation of crosslinking structure in the sericin component by the $$gamma$$ ray-irradiation should induced the hardening of the silk aerogel.

Physical properties of silk fibroin fibers irradiated with $$gamma$$ rays

Kawahara, Yutaka*; Washika, Shingo*; Ikeda, Yoshimitsu*; Nagasawa, Naotsugu

Nihon Shiruku Gakkai-Shi, 21, p.11 - 13, 2013/00

Silk fibroin fabrics were irradiated with $$gamma$$ rays of 25 kGy doses, and the changes in their tensile properties and hue were investigated. Both the breaking tensile strength of the fabrics and their elongation at break were decreased after the irradiation, accompanied by their yellowing. However, the values of their tensile properties after the irradiation has been retained more than 90% of those without the irradiation. The degree of crystallinity was almost unchanged even after the irradiation.

As a part of Advanced LWR Fuel Performance and Safety Research Program, irradiation experiments are conducted with high burnup uranium dioxide fuel and uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor. When an irradiation capsule is transferred and loaded to the reactor core, a capsule loader is used. The previous capsule loader, however, could not have enough shielding capability against neutron flux from high burnup MOX fuel. In order to fulfill the requirement and to handle a new high pressure water capsule, accordingly, a type-B capsule loader was developed.
