The structure of nano-ice crystals in rapidly frozen glucose solution was elucidated by using spin-contrast-variation small-angle neutron scattering, which distinguishes the nano-ice crystal signal from the frozen amorphous solution signal by the polarization-dependent neutron scattering. The analysis revealed that the nano-ice crystals form a planar structure with a diameter exceeding tens of nanometers and a thickness of 1 nm, which is close to the critical nucleation size. This result suggests that the glucose molecules are preferentially bound to a specific face of nano-ice crystals, and then block the crystal growth perpendicular to that face.

Ultrasound injection effect on a magnetic Bragg peak of yttrium iron garnet has been studied by quasielastic neutron scattering. The magnetic Bragg peak is vastly enhanced with decreasing temperature. The energy width increases proportionally to the square root of the sample temperature increase induced by the ultrasound injection. Because the magnetic Bragg peak is enhanced by the lattice vibration, the enhancement is expected to relate to the spin-lattice coupling closely. An observed sharp drop above 100 K in the longitudinal mode suggests the degradation of the spin-lattice coupling. It is consistent with the decline of spin Seebeck effect with increasing temperature above 100 K, proving the degradation mechanism by the spin-lattice coupling.

We developed a spin-contrast-variation neutron powder diffractometry technique that extracts the structure factor of hydrogen atoms, namely, the contribution of hydrogen atoms to a crystal structure factor. Crystals of L-glutamic acid were dispersed in a dpolystyrene matrix containing 4-methacryloyloxy-2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO methacrylate) to polarize their proton spins dynamically. The intensities of the diffraction peaks of the sample changed according to the proton polarization, and the structure factor of the hydrogen atoms was extracted from the proton-polarization dependent intensities. This technique is expected to enable analyses of the structures of hydrogen-containing materials that are difficult to determine with conventional powder diffractometry.

Sequence-dependent hydration water dynamics of dodecameric DNA

Nakagawa, Hiroshi; Yonetani, Yoshiteru*; Nakajima, Kenji; Kawamura, Seiko; Kikuchi, Tatsuya*; Inamura, Yasuhiro; Kataoka, Mikio*; Kono, Hidetoshi*

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 33, p.011101_1 - 011101_6, 2021/03

Hydration water dynamics were measured by quasi-elastic neutron scattering with Hn$$_{2}$$O/D$$_{2}$$O contrast for two DNA dodecamers, 5'CGCG$$underline{rm AATT}$$CGCG'3 and 5'CGCG$$underline{rm TTAA}$$CGCG'3, which have been computationally shown to be structurally rigid and flexible, respectively. The dynamical transitions of the hydration water as well as DNA were observed for both sequences at approximately 240 K. Above the transition temperature, the mean square displacements of the hydration water for the rigid sequence were smaller than those for the flexible one. Furthermore, the relaxation time of the hydration water was longer in the rigid DNA than in the flexible DNA. We suggest that hydration water dynamics on the picosecond timescale are associated with sequence-dependent deformability of DNA.

The structures of Cs adsorption on montmorillonite were investigated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The NMR spectra of Cs adsorbed on montmorillonite samples were measured under different Cs contents and relative humidity levels. NMR parameters were evaluated by the first principle calculations in order to identify the relationship between adsorbed Cs structures and NMR parameters. The comparisons between experimental and theoretical NMR spectra revealed that Cs is preferentially adsorbed at sites near Al for low Cs substituted montmorillonites, and that non-hydrated Cs present in partially Cs substituted samples, even after being hydrated under high relative humidity.

Nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $$q$$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $$chi$$"($$E$$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $$chi$$"($$E$$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single chirality mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

Magnons and phonons are fundamental quasiparticles in a solid and can be coupled together to form a hybrid quasi-particle. However, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian of this particle are rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored, although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour and intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in non-collinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO$$_{3}$$ and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling termrequired to produce it.

Valence fluctuation phenomena in rare-earth intermetallic compounds have attracted attention because the quantum criticality of the valence transition has been proposed theoretically. Recently, it was found that $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ shows quantum criticality without tuning and has a strong mixed-valence state. In this study, we measured the magnetization curve and X-ray magnetoabsorption in $$alpha$$-YbAl$$_{1-x}$$Fe$$_x$$B$$_4$$ ($$x=0.115$$), which is a locally isostructural polymorph of $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$. The magnetization and X-ray experiments were performed in fields up to 55 and 40 T, respectively. A small increase in the Yb valence was observed at fields where the magnetization curve exhibited a change in slope.

The development of a Water Cooled Ceramic Breeder (WCCB) Test Blanket Module (TBM) is being performed as one of the most important steps toward DEMO blanket in Japan. Regarding the fabrication technology development using F82H, the fabrication of a real scale mockup of the back wall of TBM was completed. Also the assembling of the complete box structure of the TBM mockup and planning of the pressurization testing was studied. The development of advanced breeder and multiplier pebbles for higher chemical stability was performed for future DEMO blanket application. From the view point of TBM test result evaluation and DEMO blanket performance design, the development of the blanket tritium simulation technology, investigation of the TBM neutronics measurement technology and the evaluation of tritium production and recovery test using D-T neutron in the Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) facility has been performed.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) experiments were conducted on hydrated two DNA dodecamers with distinct deformability; 5'CGCGAATTCGCG3' and 5'CGCGTTAACGCG3'. The former is known to be rigid and the latter to be flexible. The mean-square displacements (MSDs) of DNA dodecamers exhibit so-called dynamical transition around 200-240 K for both sequences. To investigate the DNA sequence dependent dynamics, the dynamics of DNA and hydration water above the transition temperature were examined using both MD simulations and QENS experiments. The fluctuation amplitude of the AATT central tetramer is smaller, and its relaxation time is longer, than that observed in TTAA, suggesting that the AT step is kinetically more stable than TA. The sequence-dependent local base pair step dynamics correlate with the kinetics of breaking the hydrogen bond between DNA and hydration water. The sequence dependent DNA base pair step fluctuations appear above the dynamical transition temperature. Together with these results, we conclude that DNA deformability is related to the local dynamics of base pair step, themselves coupled to hydration water in the minor groove.

The development of a Water Cooled Ceramic Breeder (WCCB) Test Blanket Module (TBM) is being performed as one of the most important steps toward DEMO blanket in Japan. For the TBM testing and evaluation toward DEMO blanket, the module fabrication technology development by a candidate structural material, reduced activation martensitic/ferritic steel, F82H, is one of the most critical items from the viewpoint of realization of TBM testing in ITER. Fabrication of a real scale first wall, side walls, a breeder pebble bed box and assembling of the first wall and side walls have succeeded. Recently, the real scale partial mockup of the back wall was fabricated. The fabrication procedure of the back wall, whose thickness is up to 90 mm, was confirmed toward the fabrication of the real scale back wall by F82H. This paper overviews the recent achievements of the development of the WCCB TBM in Japan.

The magnetic ground state of (CuCl)LaNb$$_2$$O$$_7$$ has been suggested to be a spin-singlet state with an excitation gap of $$Delta E sim 2.3$$ meV, while (CuCl)LaTa$$_2$$O$$_7$$ has an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state. The systems are suspected to be a frustrated quantum spin system due to the competition between the nearest and next-nearest exchange interactions. We have studied magnetic excitation in these systems by ToF inelastic neutron scattering technique. The measurements were performed on powder samples of (CuCl)LaNb$$_2$$O$$_7$$ and (CuCl)LaTa$$_2$$O$$_7$$ at a disk-chopper-type spectrometer AMATERAS in J-PARC. In both systems, a band-like excitation was observed at $$Delta E sim 2$$ meV. The $$Q$$ dependence of the intensity of magnetic excitation around 2 meV for (CuCl)LaNb$$_2$$O$$_7$$ well reproduces that observed at a triple-axis spectrometer, exhibiting characteristics of spin-singlet dimers. On the other hand, (CuCl)LaTa$$_2$$O$$_7$$ in the AFM state exhibits a different $$Q$$ dependence.
