To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Upgrades for the RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC) involving a new superconducting linac (SRILAC) are currently underway at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory (RIBF). It is crucially important to develop nondestructive beam measurement diagnostics. We have developed a beam energy position monitor (BEPM) system which can measure not only the beam position but also the beam energy simultaneously by measuring the time of flight of the beam. We fabricated 11 BEPMs and completed the position calibration to obtain the sensitivity and offset for each BEPMs. The position accuracy has been achieved to be less than 0.1 mm by using the mapping measurement.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

These substances are crystallized from a previously unidentified nanocrystalline compound, which originates from an amorphous state at low temperature. A combination of a recently developed autoindexing procedure and the charge-flipping method reveals that the crystal structure of MgCl 10HO consists of an ABCABC... sequence of Mg(HO) octahedra. The Cl anions and remaining water molecules unconnected to the Mg cations bind the octahedra, similar to other water-rich magnesium dichloride hydrates. The D positions in MgCl10DO, determined by the difference Fourier methods using the neutron powder diffraction patterns at 2.5 GPa, show the features such as bifurcated hydrogen bonds and tetrahedrally coordinated O atoms.

The more accurate understanding and appropriate control of unsaturated area around tunnel excavated in deep rock-mass are required, for the geological isolation of radioactive waste project and also underground rock cavern storage project of liquefied petroleum gas. The numerical simulation of seepage flow is usually conducted to understand and evaluate the unsaturated zone around tunnel. The unsaturated parameters (such as moisture characteristic curve and relative permeability) and appropriate control of boundary condition are indispensable for the simulation. Authors developed methodology to measure unsaturated parameters utilizing the measuring method conventionally applied to soils and showed the efficiency of the method via a laboratory experiment. The idea of combining seepage face condition and flow rate fixed condition was derived, and the efficiency was shown in an model simulation. The two developments enabled the accurate estimation and understanding the evolution of unsaturated zone around tunnel.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Short beam shear tests were performed at room temperature, liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) and liquid helium temperature (4 K) on three insulation systems consisting of woven glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites with different polymer resins and polyimide films, and the dependence of their apparent interlaminar shear strength on the temperature and the polymer resins was discussed. A detailed observation of failed specimens was made to verify the failure mechanisms. Insulation systems subjected to irradiation at room temperature were also considered, and the effect of irradiation on the cryogenic interlaminar shear properties was examined.

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

For heavy-ion cancer therapy with carbon, there is a problem about radiation exposure due to secondary particles produced by heavy ion incident reaction. We have a plan to extend our improved intra nuclear cascade (INC) model for proton incidences to INC model for alpha and carbon incidences. However, there is no experimental data about multi-particle (proton, deuteron, triton, He and alpha) production double differential cross sections (DDXs) for alpha incident reactions to validate the extended INC model. In this work, we measured multi-particle production DDXs for 100 and 230 MeV/nucleon alpha incident reactions on samples (C, Al, Co, Nb) at the HIMAC building in National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), QST. As a result, we found that results calculated by the extended INC model agreed with experimental data at 30 degrees and those underestimated the experimental data with increasing angles.
