Sorption properties of aluminum hexacyanoferrate for platinum group elements

Separation of platinum group metals (PGMs) from high-level liquid waste generated from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels is important to produce good quality vitrified glass for final disposal. A new sorbent, Aluminum hexacyanoferrate (AlHCF), was synthesized and the general sorption behavior of PGMs from concentrated nitric acid was examined. Nitric acid caused substantial elution of AlHCF but the sorption of Pd stabilized the structure. Consequently, Rh was sorbed in the presence of Pd, whereas single Rh sorption caused complete dissolution of AlHCF. Relation between sorbed mount of Pd vs eluted Al and Fe revealed that the elution ratio of Al and Fe was not the same as molar ratio of synthesized AlHCF, indicating the re-sorption of Fe resulted in formation of new structure. The sorption mechanism of PGMs by this new sorbent, AlHCF, not only the simple ion exchange, but also oxidation reduction reaction as well as kinetics play important rule. Understanding the general sorption and dissolution behavior will help improve the sorption performance of PGMs by AlHCF.

In the framework of GIF, SDC and SDG for the generation IV SFRs have been developed in the circumstance of worldwide deployment of SFRs. JAEA and MFBR have been investigating design study of an advanced loop-type SFR to satisfy SDC in the feasibility study of SDG for SFR. In this study, the ability of the pump/IHX in the advanced loop-type SFR for the safety measures has been evaluated. In addition to the safety measures, maintainability and reparability are taken into account in the advanced loop-type SFR design study. The pump/IHX has been modified to satisfy these requirements. This paper describes the modifications for the ability to withstand a severe earthquake, the reliability of the guard vessel in the primary coolant leak, and the reliability of expansion joints in a sodium-water reaction. The evaluations of thermal transient, structural vibration with pump rotation and wear-out of IHX tubes, that has been adversely effected by the modifications, were described as well.

To compare and assess the creep-fatigue life evaluation methods for stress concentration point, a series of creep-fatigue test was performed with notched specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. Mechanical creep-fatigue tests and thermal creep-fatigue test were performed. A series of Finite Element Analysis was also carried out to predict the number of cycles to failure by the several creep-fatigue life evaluation methods. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several types of evaluation methods such are stress redistribution locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method and the methods described in the JSME FRs code were applied. Through the comparisons, it was appeared that SRL method gave rational conservative prediction of the creep-fatigue life for all conditions tested in this study. The JSME FRs code gave an evaluation over 70 times conservative lives comparing with the test results.

New 2012 edition of JSME code for design and construction of fast reactors (FRs code) was published by Japan society of mechanical engineers (JSME). Main topic of the current JSME FRs code 2012 edition is registration of the two new materials, 316FR and Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. The design margins for the new materials to the rules for the components and piping serviced at elevated temperature described in the JSME FRs code were assessed. To confirm the design margins, a series of the assessment program for the new materials to the conventional design rules was performed using the evaluation of the experimental data and finite element analysis. Through these assessments, the enough design margins for new materials to the rules were confirmed.

To verify the methods of estimating strain range for discontinues structures, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out with notched specimens. All the specimens were made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo. Displacement control fatigue tests and thermal fatigue tests were performed by ordinary uni-axial push pull test machine and equipment generating the thermal gradient in the notched plate by induction heating. Elastic and inelastic finite element analysis were also performed to estimate strain range for predicting fatigue life. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several methods such as stress reduction locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up (SEF) method, Neuber's law and the procedures employed by elevated temperature design codes were applied. Through these comparisons, the applicability and conservativeness of these strain range estimation methods are discussed.

To verify the strain prediction method of discontinues structures at evaluated temperature, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out with notched specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo. Deformation control fatigue tests and thermal fatigue tests were performed by ordinary uni-axial push-pull test machine and equipments generating the thermal gradient in the notched plate by induction heating. Crack initiation and propagation process during the fatigue test were observed by the digital micro-scope and replica method. Then the ranges of several strain predictions and estimations were compared with the test results. Stress Reduction Locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method, Neuber's rule method and the methods supplied by elevated temperature design standards were applied. Through these results, the applicability and conservativeness of these strain prediction and estimation methods is discussed.

Adsorption study on PGM elements by AlHCF from nitric acid solution

In Japan, the final disposal of high level liquid waste (HLLW) will be done after vitrification into borosilicate glass and then disposed into deep underground. In this vitrification process, there are some concerns. The first concern is precipitation of platinum group metals (PGMs) in the melter due to their low solubility into borosilicate glass. The second concern is the formation of yellow phase caused by Mo content. The final concern is the generation of huge number of vitrified glasses and the requirement of wide space needed for final disposal. Among many kinds of extractants and adsorbents for separation of such metal ions, metal hexacyanoferrate (HCFs) were reported to have an ability to adsorb PGMs. The objective of this study is to elucidate the adsorption behavior of aluminum hexacyanoferrate (AlHCF) for various metal ions and understand the relation between elution and adsorption. The effect of synthetic and workup conditions on PGM and Mo adsorption from simulated HLLW (sHLLW) was surveyed. Also, the relationship between adsorption of metal ions and elution of the AlHCF was studied. The synthesized AlHCF showed adsorption performance for PGMs and Mo in simulated HLLW. As a result of an adsorption test with a Pd single component solution to investigate the adsorption mechanism, the eluted element ratio was Fe:Al = 1:4 in the Pd adsorption test. However, the element ratio was Fe:Al = 3:4 in the original AlHCF. Therefore, it was suggested the existence of not only Pd adsorption, but also resorption and stabilization mechanisms.
