Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

NOVA has almost 900 3-helium gas detectors for neutron diffraction measurements. Two Gas Electron Multiplier (GEMs) are installed as an incident-neutron and a transmission beam monitors. The performance of NOVA has been confirmed by several samples: structural analysis of crystalline and amorphous samples are demonstrated, the instrument background is low enough to measure S(Q) with the order of several ten mg for an hour. Typical S(Q) of silica glass (cylindrical rod, 20 mm long, and 7 mm diameter) is obtained up to 15 (1/) for 1 sec and up to 35 (1/) for 20 sec. These results show that NOVA is a powerful instrument for in situ dynamic investigation of rapid structural transformation in supercooled liquids and in hydrogen storage materials. Some of recent results of disordered materials on NOVA will be presented.

The Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) in the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) adopted the event data recording methods on the data acquisition system (DAQ). In this method, both of the time and position information for neutron detections are recorded. Recently we developed successfully a DAQ electric module TrigNET, which records common electric signals as events synchronized with neutrons. TrigNET will connect with instrument devices and gather output signals from them, i.e. sample direction from goniometers, thermometers for sample and phase information from choppers controller. By analyzing events from TrigNET, neutron events can be filtered for each condition users want to see. This filtering method enables users to measure and analyze the information of the sample under various outer conditions more easily.
