This rapid communication reports calculation of the radionuclide inventory in the core, collection of measured inventory in the stagnant water, and estimation of radionuclide release ratios from the core to the stagnant water. This evaluation is based on data obtained before June 3, 2011. The release ratios of tritium, iodine, and cesium were several tens of percent, whereas those of strontium and barium were smaller by one or two orders of magnitude. The release ratios in the Fukushima accident were equivalent to those in the TMI-2 accident.

Times Cited Count:6 Percentile:22.37(Polymer Science)The crystal structure analysis of various polymer substances has been reviewed on the basis of wide-angle high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. Some comments have been added about future developments in the field of structure-property relationship determination.

An understanding of the mechanisms responsible for formation or decomposition of GeO interlayer and Ge diffusion into high- layer is important to develop advanced metal/high- gate stacks for Ge MOSFETs. In this work, we fabricated HfO/GeO/Ge gate stacks by oxidation of thin metal Hf layers on Ge substrates. The effect of plasma oxidation on the change in the bonding states of Ge atoms in HfO/GeO/Ge gate stacks and the structural changes induced by metal electrode deposition and thermal annealing was systematically investigated by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-PES) and electrical characterization.

It is of importance for stable operations of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) to prevent gas entrainment (GE) phenomena due to free surface vortices. Therefore, the authors have been developing an evaluation method for GE based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. In this study, we determine the suitable CFD method for GE phenomena from several candidates through some numerical benchmarks. As the results, we obtain the following guideline for the vortex-induced gas entrainment. Free vortex flow around the vortex core can be correctly evaluated by using the appropriate numerical models such as enough mesh resolution, suitable advection solver, suitable turbulence and free surface modeling.

The Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project is planned to extend over a period 20 years. The investigations will be conducted in three phases, namely "Phase 1: Surface-based investigations", "Phase 2: Construction Phase" (investigations during construction of the underground facilities) and "Phase 3: Operation phase"(research in the underground facilities). This report summarizes the results of the investigations for the 2011 fiscal year (2011/2012). The investigations, which are composed of "Geoscientific research" and "R&D on geological disposal technology", were carried out according to "Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project Investigation Program for the 2011 Fiscal year". The results of these investigations, along with the results which were obtained in other departments of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), are properly offered to the implementations and the safety regulations. For the sake of this, JAEA has proceeded with the project in collaboration with experts from domestic and overseas research organisations.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has conducted a conceptional design study of a sodium-cooled fast reactor in a frame work of the FBR feasibility study. The plant system concept for a commercial step is intended to minimize a vessel diameter to achieve an economical competitiveness. Therefore, the coolant in the vessel has relatively higher velocity and gas entrainment (GE) prevention from a liquid surface in the reactor vessel becomes one of important issues for the thermal-hydraulic design. In order to establish a design criteria for the GE prevention, the GE from vortex dimples at the liquid surface was investigated by a working group. The 1st proposal of "Design Guideline for Gas Entrainment Prevention Using CFD Method" was established based on the knowledge gained from the working group activities. This report introduces each study in the working group to clarify the basis of the design guideline.

To observe the real movements of Pd directly, the time evolution of local structure around Pd by redox fluctuations was investigated by in situ energy-dispersive X-ray absorption fine-structure (DXAFS) analysis with a 10ms resolution. We proved that the change in structure of Pd is sufficiently fast to respond to the control frequency (1-4Hz) of an actual gasoline engine and that the Pd particles that segregate out are extremely fine.
