This report is a plan of research and development (R&D) on geosphere stability for long-term isolation of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), in fiscal year 2023. The objectives and contents in fiscal year 2023 are described in detail based on the JAEA 4th Medium- and Long-term Plan (fiscal years 2022-2028). In addition, the background of this research is described from the necessity and the significance for site investigation and safety assessment, and the past progress. The plan framework is structured into the following categories: (1) Development and systematization of investigation techniques, (2) Development of models for long-term estimation and effective assessment, (3) Development of dating techniques.

High spatial resolution neutron transmission imaging using a superconducting two-dimensional detector

In this study, we employed a superconducting detector, current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID) for neutron imaging using a pulsed neutron source. We employed the delay-line method, and high spatial resolution imaging with only four reading channels was achieved. We also performed wavelength-resolved neutron imaging by the time-of-flight method. We obtained the neutron transmission images of a Gd-Al alloy sample, inside which single crystals of GdAl$$_{3}$$ were grown, using the delay-line CB-KID. Single crystals were well imaged, in both shapes and distributions, throughout the Al-Gd alloy. We identified Gd nuclei via neutron transmissions that exhibited characteristic suppression above the neutron wavelength of 0.03 nm. In addition, the $$_{155}$$Gd resonance dip, a dip structure of the transmission caused by the nuclear reaction between an isotope and neutrons, was observed even when the number of events was summed over a limited area of 15 $$mu$$m $$times$$ 12 $$mu$$m. Gd selective imaging was performed using the resonance dip of $$_{155}$$Gd, and it showed clear Gd distribution even with a limited neutron wavelength range of 1 pm.

Removal of impurities such as organic and other types of dissolved matters from environmental water samples is required for precise analysis of tritium with a liquid scintillation counting method. In general, a distillation method is a conventional one for tritium analysis in environmental water samples, but is a time-consuming process that takes 24 hours for removal of impurities. We have proposed a rapid pretreatment method for tritium analysis, that uses ion exchange resins. In this study, we performed batch experiments, to evaluate the effectiveness of the ion exchange resins on the tritium measurement. The results obtained demonstrated that removal of impurities in the sample water by ion exchange resins can be achieved during a short period of time (i.e., in 5 min).

A quick preprocessing system for tritium analysis of environmental samples is important to judge environmental influence of tritium releases due to accident or tritium-handling facilities. Analysis of tritium in water samples with liquid scintillation counting method requires removal of impurities such as organic matter and ion species from water samples. Generally, a distillation method is adopted as a pretreatment of analysis for tritium; however, the distillation method is a time-consuming process. The aim of this study is to evaluate a rapid pretreatment method for tritium analysis with ion exchange resin. From batch and column experiments that used inland water and ion exchange resin, we confirmed removals of impurities of the water sample and that the removal of impurities was possible for a short time (by 5 minutes).

The Large Helical Device of the National Institute for Fusion Science started D-D experiments in 2017. To ensure the safety of the facility, it is important to develop evaluation methods for environmental tritium transfer. Tritiated water (HTO) in atmosphere and soil is transferred to plants, and organically bound tritium (OBT) is formed by photosynthesis. Prediction of OBT formation is important, because OBT accumulates in plants and causes dose through ingestion. The objective of this study is to estimate environmental tritium transfer using a simple compartment model and practical parameters. We proposed a simple compartment model consisting of air-soil-plant components, and tried to validate the model by comparison with a sophisticated model, SOLVEG. In this study, we plan to add wet deposition to the model and obtain parameters from measurements of soil permeability and tritium concentrations in air, soil and plants. We also establish rapid pretreatment methods for OBT analysis.

Numerical analysis of flow-induced vibration of large diameter pipe with short elbow

Flow-induced vibration (FIV) of a hot-leg piping is one of main concerns in the design of an advanced loop-type sodium cooled fast reactor. We have been developing numerical analysis models to deal with this issue. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a 1/3 scaled-model of the hot-leg piping was conducted. The results such as velocity profiles and power spectral densities (PSD) of pressure fluctuations were compared with experiment ones. The simulated PSD of pressure fluctuation at the recirculation region agreed well with the experiment. Then, stress induced by FIV was evaluated using pressure fluctuation data calculated by the CFD simulation. The calculated stress generally agrees well the measurement values, which indicates the importance of precise evaluation of the PSD of pressure fluctuation at the recirculation region for evaluation of FIV of the hot-leg piping with a short elbow.

The water experiment apparatus simulating the thermal hydraulics in a reactor vessel under operating the decay heat removal systems (DHRSs) was fabricated. The theoretical evaluation for similarity and results of basic experiments show applicability for a scale model experiment of a sodium-cooled fast reactor. This paper, moreover, describes the results of flow visualization experiment under operating a dipped-type passive DHX, which is planned to be installed in both a loop type reactor and pool type reactor, and the calculation results using FLUENT comparing with the result of water experiment.

JAEA is conducting R&D of an advanced loop-type sodium cooled fast reactor. The cooling system is planned to be simplified by employing a two-loop configuration and shortened piping with less elbows than Monju in order to reduce construction costs. The design increases flow velocity in the hot-leg piping and induces large flow turbulence around elbows. Therefore, flow-induced vibration is one of main concerns. The flow field in the hot-leg piping is affected by flow disturbance at the inlet, so it is important to evaluate flow field including the upper plenum. In this study, we analyzed unsteady fluid flow by using an integrated model of the upper plenum and the hot-leg piping system. Unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation with Reynolds stress model was used. In general, the simulation results obtained by using the integrated model show a similar tendency with the experiment results of 1/3 scaled-model of hot-leg piping with deflect flows. The coupling effect of swirling and deflected flows seems to be not significant although further investigation is needed.
