Inside the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F), there are many locations with high radiation levels due to contamination by radioactive materials that leaked from the reactor. These pose a significant obstacle to the smooth progress of decommissioning work. To help solve this issue, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), under a subsidy from the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry's decommissioning and contaminated water management project, is conducting research and development on digital technologies to improve the radiation environment inside the decommissioning site. This project, titled "Development of Technology to Improve the Environment Inside Reactor Buildings (Enhancing Digital Technology for Environment and Source Distribution to Reduce Radiation Exposure)," began in April of FY 2023. In this project, the aim is to develop three interconnected systems: FrontEnd, Pro, and BackEnd. The FrontEnd system, based on the previously developed 3D-ADRES-Indoor (prototype) from FY 2021-2022, will be upgraded to a high-speed digital twin technology usable on-site. The Pro system will carry out detailed analysis in rooms such as the new office building at 1F, while the BackEnd system will serve as a database to centrally manage the collected and analyzed data. This report focuses on the FrontEnd system, which will be used on-site. After point cloud measurement, the system will quickly create a 3D mesh model, estimate the radiation source from dose rate measurements, and refine the position and intensity of the estimated source using recalculation techniques (re-observation instructions and re-estimation). The results of verification tests conducted on Unit 5 are also presented. Furthermore, the report briefly discusses the future research and development plans for this project.

Radiological estimation and validation for the Accelerator-Based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Facility at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center

Aiming of development of facilities for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) that can be installed in hospitals, an accelerator-based BNCT facility is being developed at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center under a collaboration among the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the University of Tsukuba, and other institutions. It consists of a proton accelerator, having a maximum beam power of 80 kW, and a target, moderator, collimator and shield (TMCS) system. For the design concept, to satisfy the BNCT beam conditions and achieve a low activation, the radiation behavior in the TMCS system was simulated by the Monte Carlo method and this system configuration was optimized accordingly. In addition, the radiation estimation of the TMCS system was verified via several experiments and its applicability for BNCT was proved. This report reviews the estimation and validation studies for the development of the accelerator-based BNCT facility.

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.

We have developed direct liquid fuel anion exchange membrane fuel cell vehicles to deal with the global warming. Non-platinum group metals (PGM) catalyst has been researched to apply for both anode and cathode electrodes. A test driving was carried out for the fuel cell vehicle equipped with no precious metals as catalysts at SPring-8 in 2013. Here we introduce our results of advanced analysis for reaction mechanism and active site of non-PGM catalyst using synchrotron radiation X-rays at SPring-8.

Graft-type anion-conducting electrolyte membranes (AEMs) with imidazolium cations on graft polymers were synthesized through radiation-induced graft polymerization of ${it N}$-vinylimidazole (NVIm) on poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films, followed by ${it N}$-propylation and ion-exchange reactions. The ${it N}$-propylation proceeded quantitatively, whereas the ion-exchange reactions in 1 M KOH at 60$$^{circ}$$C were accompanied by partial $$beta$$-elimination of the imidazolium cations(AEM2), which exhibited an ion-exchange capacity (IEC) of 0.85 mmol g$$^{-1}$$ and ionic conductivity of 10 mS cm$$^{-1}$$. AEM2 showed alkaline stability at 60$$^{circ}$$C but it gradually degraded at 80$$^{circ}$$C for ca. 150 h. The copolymer-type AEM (AEM3) with an IEC of 1.20 mmol g$$^{-1}$$ was prepared through the copolymerization of NVIm with styrene on ETFE films, followed by the same ${it N}$-propylation and ion-exchange reactions. AEM3 was shown higher alkaline durability in 1 M KOH at 80$$^{circ}$$C. As a result, it exhibited higher conductivity ($$>$$10 mS cm$$^{-1}$$) for 250 h. Therefore, alkylimidazolium cations in copolymer grafts are a promising anion conducting group for alkaline-durable AEMs. A maximum power density of 75 mW cm$$^{-2}$$ is obtained for AEM3 in a direct hydrazine hydrate fuel cell.

Graft-type anion-conducting polymer electrolyte membranes were prepared by the radiation-induced graft polymerization of chloromethylstyrene into poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films and subsequent quaternization with trimethylamine to evaluate the counter anion effects on fuel cell properties. The hydroxide form was maintained in -saturated water to prevent the bicarbonate formation. The hydroxide form showed conductivity and water uptake four and two times higher than the chloride and bicarbonate forms. The hydroxide form is thermally and chemically less stable, resulting in the tendency to absorb water and to convert to the bicarbonate form.

In this study, we report the O 1$$s$$ and Cu 2$$p$$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) study on the A-site ordered perovskite ACu$$_3$$Ru$$_4$$O$$_{12}$$ (A = Na, Ca, and La). Hartree-Fock calculation and cluster model calculation were carried out to analyze O 1$$s$$ and Cu 2$$p$$ XAS spectra. The O 1$$s$$ RXES spectra indicate that the number of O 2$$p$$ holes increases in going from La to Ca to Na. In addition, the Cu 2$$p$$ RXES spectra reveal that the charge-transfer energy decreases in going from La to Ca to Na.

The anion-exchange membranes (AEM) for fuel cells were prepared by the radiation-induced graft polymerization of chloromethylstyrene into poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films and subsequent quaternization of the grafts with trimethylamine. When the AEM were treated in 1M-KOH and washed with N$$_{2}$$-saturated water, the membranes with chloride form can be converted quantitatively to hydroxide form. However, the hydroxide form was easily converted to the bicarbonate form by the treatment in non-bubbled (CO$$_{2}$$ dissolved) water. When we introduced the crosslinkers in polymer grafts, which is proved to be very effective in the proton conducting PEM having a poly(styrenesulfonic acid) grafts, the grafted AEM with both chloride and hydroxide forms showed only slight decrease of water uptake. It should be noted that AEM with hydroxide form showed very high tendency to absorb water.

The excitation function of the $$^8$$Li(d,t)$$^7$$Li reaction was directly measured using $$^8$$Li beams at E$$_{mathrm{cm}}$$ = 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 MeV with CD$$_2$$ targets. The beam energies covered the Gamow peaks for 1$$sim$$3$$times$$10$$^9$$ K. Large cross sections were observed at around E$$_{mathrm{cm}}$$ = 0.8 MeV, implying a resonance state located at 22.4 MeV in $$^{10}$$Be. The present astrophysical reaction rate is higher in one order magnitude than the presently adopted rate at around 1$$times$$10$$^9$$ K.

KEKCB is an 18 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source and is a charge breeder device for converting mass-separated 1$$^+$$ radioactive ions to multi-ionized ones by utilizing an axial injection technique to the ECR plasma. It is a part of the Tokai Radioactive Ion Accelerator Complex (TRIAC) facility. Based on the developments so far, converting efficiencies for metal elements, such as barium and indium, and for gaseous elements, such as krypton and xenon, are improved to be 7 $$%$$ and 2 $$%$$, respectively. And it is confirmed that the efficiency is nearly the constant for short-lived (t$$_{1/2}$$ $$ge$$ 1 sec) isotopes. Background ions mixed in the output beams are supressed to be 600 pps from 10$$^8$$ pps by applying all aluminum electrodes and high pressure pure-water cleanings.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.
