As a summer holiday practical training 2018, the feasibility study for nuclear design of a nuclear battery using HTTR core was carried out. As a result, it is become clear that the continuous operations for about 30 years at 2 MW, about 25 years at 3 MW, about 18 years at 4 MW, about 15 years at 5 MW are possible. As an image of thermal design, the image of the nuclear battery consisting a cooling system with natural convection and a power generation system with no moving equipment is proposed. Further feasibility study to confirm the feasibility of nuclear battery will be carried out in training of next fiscal year.

The levelized cost of electricity is one of key indicator to evaluate economic competitiveness of energy systems. This report estimated the levelized cost of SFR system considering additional safety measures identified after the 1F incident and social cost, using major calculation tools: G4-ECONS and the calculation tool developed by the Governmental WG in Japan (CEWG-tool). The calculation results of G4-ECONS showed that the additional safety measures raise 160% of levelized cost in the case of the safety enhanced SFR system with 1500 MWe of twin looped cooling system. As a result of calculation with 3% discount rate and social cost, the levelized cost of the safety enhanced SFR system with 1200 MWe of Single looped cooling system was estimated 84 mills/kWh by CEWG-tool. This result is almost equal to the estimated levelized cost of similar standard LWR system, and it was indicated the economic competitiveness of the future SFR system.

This study examined the mechanical characteristics of rock segments and backfill materials and analyzed the stability of the drift that is supported by the rock segments and gravel backfill. The results confirmed the technical aspects of the formation of the rock segments and the effectiveness of the planned efforts to further reduce the amount of cement used.

The authors have been developing methods for constructing tunnels using the minimum quantities of cement-type support materials in high-level radioactive waste disposal facilities and advancing research and development about the technical formation of rock segment using low alkaline mortar. In this study, the mechanical characteristic values concerning the rock segment and backfill materials were examined. The stability analysis of tunnel supported by the rock segment and backfilling with gravel were performed. Technical formation and effectiveness of the alternative supports planned for further reduction in cement influence was confirmed from a study result above-mentioned.

Cement-type materials that are used for supports or grouting at high-level radioactive waste disposal facilities leach into the groundwater and create a highly alkaline environment. Of concern in highly alkaline environments are the alteration of bentonite used as buffers or backfill materials, and of surrounding rock mass, and the increased uncertainty regarding the provision of performance of the disposal system over a long period of time. In this study, to reduce the quantity of cement-type materials that cause highly alkaline environments, technical feasibility of the support structure including the materials which considered the long-term performance of the HLW disposal system are discussed by using knowledge and technology accumulated in JAEA and Shimizu Construction. Moreover, based on the results, the problems remained in the application to the future HLW disposal institution are summarized.

We are developing the superconducting (SC) cavity for Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) in Japan. In order to survey the electron emission and the heating spot of the cavity inner surface in detail, cavity diagnostics with the rotating mapping system was applied. Two types of sensors, one of which was the carbon resistor and the other was the Si PIN photo diode, were set to detect the temperature rise and electron emission. By rotating the sensor arrays around the cavity axis, a lot of information was obtained all over the cavity surface in detail. This paper reports the results of vertical tests by using this rotating mapping system with the single-cell and 9-cell Nb ERL cavity.

We started to develop an input power coupler for a 1.3 GHz ERL superconducting cavity for main linac. We fabricated power coupler components such as ceramic windows and bellows and carried out the high-power test of the components by using a CW 30 kW IOT power source. During this test, the ceramic window was broken by the sudden heat load. We found that this heat load occurred by the unexpected dipole mode. We renewed the ceramic window and successfully carried out the high power test up to CW 27 kW input power.

We started to develop an input coupler for a 1.3 GHz ERL superconducting cavity. Required input power is about 20 kW for the cavity acceleration field of 20 MV/m and the beam current of 100 mA in energy recovery operation. The input coupler is designed based on the STF-BL input coupler and some modifications are applied to the design for the CW 20 kW power operation. We fabricated input coupler components such as ceramic windows and bellows and carried out the high-power test of the components by using a 30 kW IOT power source and a test stand constructed for the high-power test. In this report, we mainly describe the results of the high-power test of ceramic window and bellows.

We are developing a input coupler for the 1.3GHz 9-cell superconducting cavities to realize the ERL. Estimated input power is about 20kW for 20MV/m ERL operation. This coupler is based on the STF-BL input coupler, which adopts the TRISTAN type coaxial coupler, and some modifications are applied for the CW 20kW power operation. Now we are developing the high power coupler test stand to carry out the components test of the ceramic windows and bellows by using a 30kW IOT. In this paper, we report the design strategy of the input power coupler for ERL main linac and the recent status of the high power coupler test stand.

Using as a model multicellular organism, we push forward a heavy-ion microbeam irradiation individual-study. As for about 1.2 mm in a range of carbon ions in water, all cells and tissues of are microbeam irradiation objects. Sugimoto et al. showed DNA-damage-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in locally irradiated areas of . We focus the nervous system of and study the effects of localized irradiation on salt chemotaxis learning behavior. However, the anesthetic method for fixation of animals is not usable because the whole body irradiation of Co rays affected only transition stage of the conditioning for salt chemotaxis learning. Thus, now we are constructing the heavy-ion microbeam irradiation system for living target .

Development of ERL for the future light source has been started since 2006. Superconducting main cavities are one of the most important items for stable beam acceralation of high current of 100 mA with energy recovery mode. The superconducting cavities of 1.3 GHz have been developed under collaboration with JAEA, KEK and ISSP. The status of input coupler of the main accelerator will be reported.
