We succeeded in synthesizing barium titanate nanocubes by hydrothermal synthesis. When the nanocubes were examined in detail using a scanning electron microscope, pulsed neutrons, and large synchrotron radiation, it was found that a reconstituted layer of titanium oxide was formed on the surface.

Local disorder in proton conductor BaSn$$_{0.5}$$In$$_{0.5}$$O$$_{2.75}$$ analyzed by neutron diffraction/ atomic pair distribution function

Igawa, Naoki; Kodama, Katsuaki; Taguchi, Tomitsugu*; Yoshida, Yukihiko*; Matsukawa, Takeshi*; Hoshikawa, Akinori*; Ishigaki, Toru*

Transactions of the Materials Research Society of Japan, 43(6), p.329 - 332, 2018/12

For the understanding of the crystal structural effect on the electrical properties, the local disorder in BaSn$$_{0.5}$$In$$_{0.5}$$O$$_{2.75}$$ which is one of the excellent proton conductors for solid oxide fuel cells was estimated by using the Atomic Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis method with the neutron diffraction. The local structure is almost the same as the average structure which was estimated by the Rietveld analysis using the cubic crystal structure (space group, $${it Pm}$$$$overline{3}$$$${it m}$$) in the atomic distance range of ${it r}$ $$>$$ 6${AA}$. The PDF profile was fitted better using the tetragonal crystal structure with the space group of ${it P}$4/${it mmm}$ than those with $${it Pm}$$$$overline{3}$$$${it m}$$ in the range ${it r}$ $$<$$ 6${AA}$. Those results indicate the presence of the local disorder in the lattice. In this work, the relationship between the average and local structures of BaSn$$_{0.5}$$In$$_{0.5}$$O$$_{2.75}$$ will be discussed.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction for LaCo$$_{1-x}$$ Rh$$_{x}$$O$$_{3}$$ have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co$$^{3+}$$ ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$$_{6}$$ octahedron of LaCo$$_{0.8}$$Rh$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{3}$$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$$^{3+}$$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$$_{3}$$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin state and low-spin state Co$$^{3+}$$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin state Co$$^{3+}$$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$$^{3+}$$ ions.

We have performed neutron powder diffraction of the superconducting FeSr$$_{2}$$YCu$$_{2}$$O$$_{6+}$$$$_{delta}$$ and the nonsuperconducting FeSr$$_{2}$$Y(Cu$$_{0.95}$$Zn$$_{0.05}$$)$$_{2}$$O$$_{6+}$$$$_{delta}$$ samples at low temperature and room temperature to investigate the relation between the crystal structure ant the physical properties. Neutron diffraction study indicates that the magnetic order in this compound is not long-range order because we observed no extra reflection due to the magnetic superstructure. We have observed structural anomaly related to Cu in the superconducting sample around 30 K although we could not observe it in the nonsuperconducting sample. There is possibility of the change of the charge distribution around 30 K in the superconducting sample.

Diffuse scattering is an important tool for analyzing disordered arrangement of atoms in crystals. In this study the oscillatory of diffuse scattering intensity of PbF$$_{2}$$ was observed both in wavelength-dispersive and angular-dispersive neutron scattering measurements, and we discuss the diffuse neutron scattering intensity by TOF measurement on powder sample of PbF$$_{2}$$ compared with those by angular-dispersive diffraction patterns. The diffuse scattering theory including the correlation effects among thermal displacements of atoms is effective for the treatment of diffuse background intensity obtained by TOF neutron experiment.

The Ibaraki prefecture materials design diffractometer for J-PARC; Designing neutron guide

Ibaraki Prefecture Materials Design Diffractometer of J-PARC is a time-of-flight neutron powder diffractometer with the resolution as good as $$Delta d$$/$textit{d}$ = 0.16 % (almost constant value) for $$0.18<d ($$$AA$)<5$$ (L1 of 26.5 m). Since this diffractometer has many detectors covering wide 2$$theta$$ range, measurements with wide $textit{Q}$ range, $$0.007<Q($$$AA$^{-1}$$$$)< 50$$, i.e., PDF analysis and small angle scattering can also be performed. Designing of neutron guide is therefore very important to enhance the performances mentioned above without sacrificing beam intensity. Non-parallel guides including elliptical ones have been compared with a linear-straight guide using the McStas simulation. The elliptical guide having the exit focal points away behind the sample position is available to increase the neutron flux at the sample but give a slight lowering of the instrumental resolution. This elliptical guide gives also Garland peaks at short wavelengths that may give large ambiguities in powder diffraction measurements. Therefore, the linear-straight guide is considered as the best choice for this instrument to keep a good resolution and also a relatively high flux.

The fabrication of the 2nd loading fuel for the HTTR has been started from October 2002 and completed successfully by March 2005. While the fabrication of the 2nd loading fuel for the HTTR, the fuel kernels, coated fuel particles and fuel compacts has inspected to compared with fuel fabrication specification. As the result of these inspections, we confirmed a good quality of the 2nd loading fuel for the HTTR as similarly the first loading fuel for the HTTR. This report describes fabrication data of fuel kernels, coated fuel particle and fuel compacts of HTTR 2nd loading fuel. The fabrication data of this report could be the basis of the study of fuel and fission product release behavior etc. on the HTTR operation, and contribute to post irradiation examinations of HTTR fuel in the future.
