Corrosion behavior of iron-chrome alloys in liquid bismuth

Takai, Toshihide; Furukawa, Tomohiro; Watanabe, Shigeki*; Ishioka, Noriko*

Mechanical Engineering Journal (Internet), 9(4), p.21-00397_1 - 21-00397_11, 2022/08

For the mass production of astatine-211, a promising radiopharmaceutical for cancer treatment, the National Institute for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology has proposed the innovative "Liquid Bismuth Target System." The target window in this system must be made from a material that resists the highly corrosive liquid bismuth environment. To meet this requirement, a promising target window material was selected in corrosion experiments performed in stagnant liquid bismuth. Based on knowledge of corrosion in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic gained during the development of fast reactors and accelerator-driven subcritical systems, experiments were carried out under saturated dissolved oxygen and low oxygen conditions, and the corrosion behaviors of the specimens were evaluated. The FeCrAl-alloy exhibited the most excellent corrosion resistance, followed by FeCrMo-alloy. Both materials are suitable candidates for the target window.

Radionuclide therapy with low-energy auger electron emitters could potentially provide high anti-tumor efficacy while keeping normal organs toxicity low. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of auger electron emitter $$^{125}$$I and compared it with beta-emitter $$^{131}$$I for tumor treatment in 2D and 3D cell culture models. The computer simulation model for 2D and 3D cell culture were constructed, and the absorbed radiation dose of $$^{125}$$I or $$^{131}$$I in each model were calculated by using a Monte Carlo simulation code (PHITS). The therapeutic effect of $$^{125}$$I was comparable to that of $$^{131}$$I in 2D model, but the efficacy was inferior to that of $$^{131}$$I-MIBG in 3D model, since crossfire effect is negligible and the homogeneous distribution of radionuclide was insufficient.

Production cross sections of astatine isotopes $$^{207-211}$$At in the 29-57 MeV $$^7$$Li induced reaction with $$^{nat}$$Pb target have been measured by $$alpha$$- and $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry. Excitation functions of production cross sections have been compared with a statistical model calculation to study the reaction mechanism of $$^7$$Li + $$^{nat}$$Pb. Considerably small experimental cross sections of $$^{210}$$At and $$^{209}$$At compared with the calculation were clearly observed at incident energies higher than 44 MeV, indicating that the effects of breakup reaction play a role. A chemical separation of astatine from an irradiated lead target has been studied with a dry-distillation method. A complementary way to produce astatine isotopes has been developed.

As basic studies of bifunctional chelating agent for $$^{177}$$Lu-labeled antibodies, $$^{177}$$Lu complexation of DOTA and DTPA was investigated by the addition of competing metals, Ca(II), Fe(II) and Zn(II). From comparison of competing metals, the inhibition by competing metals on the $$^{177}$$Lu complexation was in the order of Ca(II) $$<$$ Fe(II) $$<$$ Zn(II) and Ca(II) $$<$$ Zn(II) $$<$$ Fe(II) as DOTA and DTPA, respectively. For comparison between DOTA and DTPA, the susceptibility to the inhibition on $$^{177}$$Lu complexation by all the three competing metals was DTPA $$<$$ DOTA. Therefore, it was found that DTPA is advantageous for $$^{177}$$Lu complexation compared with DOTA in the presence of Ca(II), Fe(II) and Zn(II), and that the elimination of Fe from $$^{177}$$Lu solution is especially effective because the $$^{177}$$Lu complexation of DTPA is highly inhibited by Fe(II).

We have for the first time demonstrated that the therapeutic nuclide of $$^{67}$$Cu produced by $$^{68}$$Zn($$n$$,$$x$$)$$^{67}$$Cu has highest radionuclide purity compared to previous ones. We measured a $$gamma$$-ray spectrum of the reaction product produced by bombarding an enriched $$^{68}$$Zn sample with neutrons with a HPGe detector. The neutrons were obtained by $$^{rm nat}$$C($$d$$,$$n$$) using 41 MeV deuterons provided from Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application of Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Relative production yields of impurity radionuclides such as $$^{65}$$Zn to $$^{67}$$Cu are extremely low, which allow us to chemically separate $$^{67}$$Cu from an irradiated $$^{68}$$Zn sample with a few steps and to reuse high cost an enriched $$^{68}$$Zn sample. The present result strongly suggest that the $$^{68}$$Zn($$n$$,$$x$$)$$^{67}$$Cu reaction is the most promising route to produce high quality $$^{67}$$Cu and could solve a longstanding problem of establishing an appropriate production method of $$^{67}$$Cu.
