Small-angle scattering (SAS) is effective for such structural analysis. However, quantitatively capturing local molecular structure formation and molecular reactions at a scale of less than 1 nm via SAS is difficult. In this study, to analyze the structure of non-equilibrium phenomena in light-responsive materials, a new sample environment has been developed for a time-of-flight small- and wide-angle neutron scattering instrument (TAIKAN), comprising a UV-Vis irradiation system, UV-Vis absorption measurement equipment and photodetector. Simultaneous measurement of small-angle neutron scattering and UV-Vis absorption was achieved. This system was used to demonstrate the in situ observation of UV-Vis irradiation-induced structural change of micelles formed by a light-responsive surfactant sample in an aqueous solution.

A vertical movement type of sample changer for the neutron spectrometer BL02, J-PARC MLF was developed for our top-loading type cryostat. The sample changer, termed as "PEACE", can control reproducibility of the irradiated position using guides made of polyether ether ketone. The variation between the background scattering profiles of three sample positions was found to be less than plus minus 1.6%. This result is reasonable, considering the deviation of sample position of less than plus minus 0.3 mm from the vertical axis.

The TOF type Si crystal analyzer near backscattering spectrometer DNA built at the spallation neutron source of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). DNA is the first Si crystal analyzer backscattering spectrometer with pulse shaping chopper installed at a spallation neutron source. It offers a high-energy resolution of about 2.4 micro eV by a pulse shaping double disk chopper with 10 mm width slit @225Hz at currently, and about 2.0 micro eV by pulse shaping double disk choppers with 10 mm width slits @300Hz at final design goal. It was verified on the contribution of each of an analyzer crystal mirror crystalline and an incident neutron pulse time width using commissioning experimental results, to configure the energy resolution function. At the same time, we also will report the specification and current performance of DNA.

Polarized neutron reflectometry is one of the powerful methods to investigate various phenomena on the surfaces and interfaces of a variety of films with layered structures such as magnetic materials. In this instrument, a two-dimensional position-sensitive neutron detection system consists of multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) with helium-3 gas and its data reduction software have been developed for the measurement of off-specular reflectivity and grazing incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS). Each wire signal is read out by amplifier-shaper-discriminator (ASD) individually to meet with demands for a fast counting response and high spatial resolution for the measurement at intense pulsed neutron sources. The pitch between anode/cathode wires is 1.0 mm. The spatial resolution was 1.8 mm. We report characterization results of 2-D MWPC system at BL17 and its applications to neutron reflectivity measurements.
