Detailed $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $$^{28}$$Ne has been performed using the one-neutron removal reaction from $$^{29}$$Ne. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $$^{28}$$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

Crystal structure analysis of ABO$$_3$$ perovskite-type oxyfluoride were performed by using high-energy synchrotron X-ray measurement. The effect of tolerance factor appeared in the local structure. The average structure of perovskite-type oxyfluoride found to be a cubic structure in the traditional crystal structure analysis.

For better nuclear material accountancy, we had developed a non-destructive assay system dedicated to uranium waste drums (JAWAS-N: JAEA Waste Assay System at Ningyo-toge). The system is based on a fast neutron direct interrogation (FNDI) method. To clarify the characteristics of the FNDI method and the performance of JAWAS-N, experimental and computational mock-up tests were carried out using various dry materials that contained known amounts of natural uranium. As a result, linearity between the die-away time ($$tau$$$$_{2}$$) and the counts of fast neutrons attributed to $$^{235}$$U fission was confirmed experimentally and analytically. Moreover, the MCNP simulation was performed to discuss the radial and axial dependences of $$^{235}$$U fission probability, neutron detection efficiency, and sensitivity on uranium distributions in the drum. The simulation results agreed with the empirical results reported in a previous paper, providing valuable information on the practice of FNDI-based uranium determination. Furthermore, the nominal detection limits of natural uranium in JAWAS-N were estimated to be 15, 4, and 2 g for $$tau$$$$_{2}$$ = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 msec, respectively. The findings obtained here will contribute to the implementation of the FNDI method to assess the quantities of $$^{235}$$U in actual uranium waste drums.

Excitation functions of quasielastic scattering cross sections for the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{208}$$Pb, $$^{50}$$Ti + $$^{208}$$Pb, and $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm reactions were successfully measured by using the gas-filled recoil-ion separator GARIS. Fusion barrier distributions were extracted from these data, and compared with the coupled-channels calculations. It was found that the peak energies of the barrier distributions for the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{208}$$Pb and $$^{50}$$Ti + $$^{208}$$Pb systems coincide with those of the 2n evaporation channel cross sections for the systems, while that of the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm is located slightly below the 4n evaporation ones. This results provide us helpful information to predict the optimum beam energy to synthesize superheavy nuclei.

Solid solutions of NaNbO$$_3$$ and KNbO$$_3$$ are the candidate for non-Pb piezoelectric materials. It is difficult to obtain dense ceramics owing to the difference of their calcination temperature. We developed the malic acid complex method to obtain the (Na$$_{0.5}$$K$$_{0.45}$$Li$$_{0.05}$$)NbO$$_3$$ to obtain a high-quality ceramics sample. It was found that (Na$$_{0.5}$$K$$_{0.45}$$Li$$_{0.05}$$)NbO$$_3$$ lies complicated phase boundaries; one is the structural phase boundary between NaNbO$$_3$$ and KNbO$$_3$$, the other is that between (Na,K)NbO$$_3$$ mixture and LiNbO$$_3$$, which is a sintering additive.

Bi$$_{0.5}$$Na$$_{0.5}$$TiO$$_3$$ (BNT) has been investigated as a lead-free piezoelectric material. We have already performed structure analysis of BNT. The average structure of BNT with low-temperature synthesis is a rhombohedral structure and it becomes a monoclinic structure as the synthesized temperature increases. Our local structure analysis indicated that the ${it A}$-site atoms of Bi and Na displaced toward different position depending on the lattice expansion and construction. We synthesized BNT crystals with various substitution and performed local structure analysis to examine the hypothesis. The local structure analysis revealed that the substitution effect on BNT can be explained by our hypothesis.

A technique to utilize radioisotopes of Nb and Ta was developed for chemical studies of element 105, Db, by coupling a gas-jet transport system to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator (GARIS). The short-lived $$^{88}$$Nb and $$^{170}$$Ta were produced with nuclear reactions using a $$^{19}$$F beam whose energy was the same as that to produce $$^{262}$$Db. Then, they were separated with GARIS and extracted to a chemistry laboratory with the gas-jet transport system. By changing only magnetic field of GARIS and inserting an energy degrader and a shutter for recoil ions, we could deliver the $$^{88}$$Nb and $$^{170}$$Ta to a chemistry device for $$^{262}$$Db without changing other experimental conditions.

Production cross sections of Rf isotopes in the $$^{248}$$Cm + $$^{18}$$O reaction were measured at the beam energy range of 88.2 to 101.3 MeV by use of a gas-filled recoil ion separator. The excitation functions of $$^{260}$$Rf, $$^{261a}$$Rf, and $$^{262}$$Rf were obtained together with those of spontaneously fissioning nuclides which have few-second half-lives and have been assigned to $$^{261b}$$Rf and a longer-lived state of $$^{262}$$Rf. The excitation function of few-second spontaneously fissioning nuclide exhibited the maximum cross section at the $$^{18}$$O beam energy of 94.8 MeV. The shape of the excitation function was almost the same as that of $$^{261a}$$Rf, whereas it was quite different from those of $$^{260}$$Rf and $$^{262}$$Rf. A few-second spontaneously fissioning nuclide previously reported as $$^{261b}$$Rf and $$^{262}$$Rf observed in$$^{248}$$Cm + $$^{18}$$O reaction was identified as $$^{261b}$$Rf.

New result in the production and decay of an isotope, $$^{278}$$113 of the 113th element

An isotope of the 113th element, $$^{278}$$113, was produced in a nuclear reaction with a $$^{70}$$Zn beam on a $$^{209}$$Bi target. We observed six consecutive $$alpha$$ decays following the implantation of a heavy particle in nearly the same position in the semiconductor detector, in extremely low background condition. The fifth and sixth decays are fully consistent with the sequential decays of $$^{262}$$Db and $$^{258}$$Lr both in decay energies and decay times. This indicates that the present decay chain consisted of $$^{278}$$113, $$^{274}$$Rg (Z = 111), $$^{270}$$Mt (Z = 109), $$^{266}$$Bh (Z = 107), $$^{262}$$Db (Z = 105), and $$^{258}$$Lr (Z = 103) with firm connections. This result, together with previously reported results from 2004 and 2007, conclusively leads the unambiguous production and identification of the isotope $$^{278}$$113, of the 113th element.

Two isomeric states in $$^{265}$$Sg, i.e, $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{a}$$ and $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{b}$$ were produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{22}$$Ne,5$$n$$) reaction. Decay properties of $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{a,b}$$ were investigated with a rotating-wheel apparatus for $$alpha$$ and spontaneous fission (SF) spectrometry under low background condition attained by a gas-jet transport system coupled to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator. Based on genetically correlated $$alpha$$-$$alpha$$ (-$$alpha$$) and $$alpha$$-SF decay chains, 18 and 24 events were assigned to $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{a}$$ and $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{b}$$, respectively. The half-life and $$alpha$$-particle energy of $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{a}$$ were measured to be $$8.5^{+2.6}_{-1.6}$$ s and $$8.84 pm 0.05$$ MeV, respectively, and those of $$^{265}$$Sg$$^{b}$$ were $$14.4^{+3.7}_{-2.5}$$ s and $$8.69 pm 0.05$$ MeV.

Decay properties of $$^{264}$$Hs and $$^{265}$$Hs produced in the $$^{207,208}$$Pb($$^{58}$$Fe, $$xn$$) [$$x$$=1, 2] reactions were studied using a gas-filled recoil ion separator at the linear accelerator facility of RIKEN. A total of 6 decay chains were assigned to $$^{264}$$Hs. Cross sections for the $$^{264}$$Hs production in the $$^{208}$$Pb($$^{58}$$Fe,$$2n$$) and $$^{207}$$Pb($$^{58}$$Fe,$$n$$) reactions were measured to be $$2.8^{+6.5}_{-2.3}$$pb and $$6.9^{+4.4}_{-3.1}$$pb, respectively. The isotope $$^{264}$$Hs decayed with a half-life of $$0.751^{+0.518}_{-0.218}$$ms by $$alpha$$-particle emission and spontaneous fission. The $$alpha$$-particle energy of $$^{264}$$Hs was observed at 10.61$$pm$$0.04 and 10.80$$pm$$0.08 MeV. The spontaneous fission branch of $$^{264}$$Hs was found to be $$17^{+38}_{-14}%$$.
