In order to develop new beam species of highly charged noble gas ions, we have constructed an in-terminal heavy ion injector in the JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator using a compact ECR ion source. This work was associated with a lot of development to operate the ion source on the 20UR Pelletron high voltage terminal in high pressure SF gas environment. Highly charged ions of N, O, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe have been accelerated satisfactorily. Operating data integrated during many years long beam delivery service are summarized.

The JAEA-Tokai folding-type tandem accelerator has been operated for 25 years. There are many optical devices at the terminal, such as a 180-degeree bending magnet (charge-analysis electromagnet) and electrostatic quadrupole lens, used for transporting ion beams from low-energy accelerating tubes to high-energy accelerating tubes. We have replaced the aged coil inside the 180-degeree bending magnet for a maintenance period of 2007. At this time, we have carried out the project to align the whole optical devices at the terminal. Precise measurement of the positions for these devices revealed that they were misaligned by 5 mm at the maximum deviation. By aligning these devices with the standard beam axis, we have improved the transmission of ion beams and increased beam currents with stable operation.

Screening test of relays used under pressurized sulfur hexafluoride (SF)

Many measurement and control equipment is installed inside of a high voltage terminal of the JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator and operated under pressurized sulfur hexafluoride (SF) of 0.5 MPa. This screening test has been carried out to select a relay, which is usable under the SF for turn on and off a power supply of the devices, from commercial relays used in the atmospheric condition. Four kinds of relay were tested: electromechanical relay (EMR), magnet contactor (MAG), solid-state relay (SSR) and hybrid relay (HYB). Temperature of the relay, change of appearance of the relay including contact surface using the SEM and EDS were measured and observed. The EMR and the MAG showed irregular contact because of the sulfide or fluoride, and these compounds which are formed by chemical reaction between metals and sulfur or hydrogen fluoride due to dissociation of SF in electric arcs. Solid-state relay and hybrid relay are available in the pressurized SF of 0.5 MPa.
